Great Duffle Coat but weak fastening

Great Duffle. Warm and comfortable. Weak links are the rope loops for the toggles. After two winters it frayed then broke. Gloverall will sell you bits of rope - but won’t accept it back to mend. Ordinary sewing machines can’t cope. Could learn from Barbour who do just that. Disappointing customer care.

Thank you for your review. We are glad that your purchase is warm and comfortable, though it is a shame about the jute rope. We do repairs ourselves or cover the costs up to a year after purchase as covered by our warranty, but beyond that we don't. We then recommend using a reliable tailor/seamstress since they should know what to do and if not give recommendations for someone that does. We don't cover those costs.

We do this because if the rope breaks too quickly then there was likely a fault even if the rope appeared to be perfect. It can be hard to tell with rope until it breaks because faults missed by our QC are more likely on the inside. However, if a year has passed before the rope breaks then the cause cannot be certain since many factors would have contributed.

We're sorry that you were disappointed with our customer care.

Attempted to return an item that didn’t…

Attempted to return an item that didn’t fit. I paid nearly $100 to return this to Gloverall. The item remained at the parcel office for nearly a month because Gloverall refused to pay the return duties that the GB postal service said they owed. They also refused to send a representative 10 minutes to the parcel office to resolve the issues. Two months later, I am still debating customer service for a refund as I have neither my money nor the coat. Worst company I have ever had the misfortune of shopping with.

Gloverall has stated that they never send individuals to pick up packages from their local post office. Nor do they offer to pay for duties which, again, their own representative has said they owe. This is understandable; however, no effort or constructive suggestions were ever offered to resolve this issue. Now, as in my correspondence, the issue was always mine and mine alone to resolve, Gloverall absolved themselves of all responsibility; for ensuring a seamless return, managing duties, or even offering possible ways to receive a refund. Instead, I am made to feel, as I am now, that I should have done more and this fault lies with me. Again, I paid nearly $100 to ship this item, all duties and fees were paid and documents signed by me ahead of time. There was nothing left to pay. Instead of acknowledging this, Gloverall has washed their hands while I have neither the coat which I returned nor the $600 I spent on it initially. I do not expect a handout, but with the equivalent of a digital shrug, Gloverall has said it all. As long as they continue to foist these pitiful excuses as to why they hold no responsibility, I will be happy to debate them and query these charges.

Gloverall’s response has said they never said they were responsible for the customs duties that prevented my return order from being delivered, and yet in their correspondence with British Post they were told: "Your parcel is being held in our delivery depot awaiting payment of customs charges. The addressee is being sent a letter outlining the charges and how to pay" so they weren't awaiting a collection. The addressee is referring to us” this being a direct quote from their representative and their communication with British post. This would seem to indicate that they were in fact liable for the duties by their own admission, and therefore their refusal to pay led to the inability of my return to be delivered and prevention of receiving my refund. This is either ineptitude or willful disinterest. Regardless, the end result is the same — No coat, no refund.

I will also note that now that I have chosen a public forum in which to write a complaint, the ability for Gloverall to appear conciliatory is extraordinary. It’s a shame this did not appear in our private conversations. Again, there is no resolution offered and I stand by my original statement: I would never recommend this company or its products.

Thank you for your review. We're sorry that you are so disappointed with your return experience and our customer service. I understand that return costs can be expensive, but we do clearly state that we don't cover those costs for returns/exchanges from outside the UK in our policy. The return fee is entirely between you and the courier you chose.

The duties owed to the GB postal service were not specifically owed by Gloverall, they were owed for the return shipment before it could be released, and as stated clearly in our policy we "do not cover shipping costs for returns or exchanges" from outside the UK. It was therefore your responsibility to make that payment. Although, from my understanding the duties are paid during the exportation before DHL make the delivery so I don't think duties are due again upon return.

As for the refusal to send someone to pick up your parcel, until the duties were paid the post office wouldn't release the package, so if we sent someone it would be a wasted trip. When the duties were paid they would dispatch for delivery as ordered by you. But even if that wasn't the case and we could have collected it, that isn't a service we offer or have ever offered. There was no reason for us to make an exception because the parcel couldn't be released and we were not at fault.

As for your refund. We cannot grant a refund until the return has arrived at our warehouse. Our returns process for non-UK orders only begins, unless special circumstances like a fault on our part applies, after we receive the returned package.

All these points have been previously discussed between you and our customer service representative, if you need any further clarification then please contact them directly.

We don't send individuals to pick up packages from the post office as that is not a service we provide. As covered above, your package was being withheld so even if we went there we wouldn't've been able to collect it without paying. Even if it wasn't being withheld and we could have collected it, that isn't a service we offer. Returns are sent to the warehouse where they are unpacked and processed. Our policy does state that we are not responsible for the return shipping.

We did not say that we owe duties. We, both myself in my previous response and our customer service, said several times that if more duties were owed beyond that which was already paid during exportation then as stated in the policy that was up to you to pay as we don't cover costs of return shipping from outside the UK.

I am sorry if we made you feel that we weren't doing anything to help you. However, we did try to help. When first contacted we addressed the collection and recommended you contact the courier to find out why it hadn't been delivered since you paid for it to be delivered. When you struggled to get in contact with them we asked for information so we could help by contacting them from our end. You gave us the tracking number, so we checked the tracking and noticed it wasn't being held for collection but was waiting for payment. We explained that payment was made during export so a new payment shouldn't be due based on previous returns and emailed them to question the payment. When they responded just to confirm payment was due, we explained in more detail and asked them to respond to your attempts to contact them. A day later we were notified that the package was being sent back to you and told to contact the sender. As we were not the one that had hired their services we couldn't inquire further so recommended you contact them. We did everything we could to try and help resolve the situation, but there wasn't much we could do.

Frankly, I think the blame in this case lies with the courier as they ignored your attempts to contact them and only gave us a standard response for payment rather than addressing our questions at the last minute before sending it back.

Once figuring out I did not have to use…

Once figuring out I did not have to use a "password" I easily was able to do the orders. The quality of scarf & hat are great (they will be put to good use next winter). The gloverall Pins have been well received gifts. I graduated from Gloversville, N.Y. High School in 1965. I have given 2 of the pins to classmates for our 60th Reunion this July.
