No Integrity

You spend half a million dollars on a home and the builder won’t stand behind their warranty.

Customer Service Has Severely Declined

We built a DR HOTON Home in 2000. We had no issues in the 18 years we lived there. In 2025, we bought a DR HORTON Model Home. Clearly 25 years has seen some serious “corner cutting” and quality control degradation to increase profitability.
More importantly, the after sales customer service is a serious deficit. 120 day post closing, our “pre-inspection”times have still not been addressed.
Site Superintendent's are very young, inexperienced and certainly clueless when it comes to follow through and customer service,

Corners Cut in New Build - Door Fell Off Within Months

We bought a brand new home from D.R. Horton and within a short period, a bedroom door completely fell off the frame.

The root cause was not misuse, it was poor installation. The hinges were secured with short screws into the soft door jamb instead of being anchored into the wall stud. This is a known shortcut in production builds because it’s faster, but it significantly reduces durability.

When the door fell, it also damaged the adjacent wall.

I fixed the issue myself using proper-length structural screws (which should have been used in the first place). However, because I made the repair to prevent further damage, D.R. Horton refused to address any of the resulting wall damage, claiming the situation was now “altered” and no longer covered under warranty.

So to summarize:

The failure was caused by substandard installation

The fix required basic best-practice carpentry

The builder declined responsibility after the fact

This isn’t about one door, it’s about build quality and accountability.

If you’re buying from a production builder, inspect everything carefully, especially doors, hinges, and anything that relies on proper anchoring.

A small shortcut today can turn into a bigger issue tomorrow.

We have had no end of issues with the appliances and mechanics of the house that we bought new 18 months ago. The appliances are the cheapest rubbish. We have had to replace the washing machine, have the dryer repaired, now the water heater has gone bad and is costly to repair, even though the parts are under warranty. We also replaced the stove with a better model. I would not recommend getting the appliance package through this builder.

Terrible building quality

Terrible building quality. Warranty coverage was denied despite clear problems, and customer service repeatedly deflected responsibility. Very disappointing after investing so much time, money, and trust.

I purchased a home with DR Horton in…

I purchased a home with DR Horton in Hopkins SC. My experience with the construction manage Mr Cox was terrible. Mr Cox is rude and dismissive. DR Horton offers a warranty at the time off clossing with a blue tape walk thru and after 11 months with a final blue tape walk thru to address any issues noticed after settling in the the home. Shortly after settling in I noticed a small manufacturer defective in master bath counter sink. At the final warranty process with the warranty department a tech was sent out to apply epoxy to the defect and it looks worst then it did with the defect. The epoxy applied was Grey and the counter it white. So it doesn't match the counter and looks terrible. Mr Cox was rude and dismissive and hung up the phone

Drainage Issue in the Village of Algonquin, Illinois. I am seeking assistance regarding a…


I am seeking assistance regarding a drainage issue at my D.R. Horton home in Algonquin. After normal rainfall, water ponds in the center of my yard and remains for several days.

This appears to be a grading concern. I have contacted D.R. Horton multiple times but the issue remains unresolved.

I am respectfully asking D.R. Horton and the Village of Algonquin to review the lot grading to ensure it meets approved drainage and stormwater standards.

If other homeowners in the area are experiencing similar drainage concerns, I would appreciate connecting.

Floor Warranty

I contacted DR Horton Warranty who referred me to Strathmore Flooring who apparently handles the Mohawk Warranty and was put in contact with Strathmore Flooring associate Ashley (don't know last name). I sent pictures, they came out to my home in March of 2024. Asked me what I cleaned the floor with etc. I was told they would follow up with me; this did not happen. I contacted the builder DR Horton who advised again that I should contact Ashley with Strathmore Flooring. I did and was told she was still waiting on to hear back from the claims department (a year later). Fast forward to this year February 2026. I contacted DR Horton again and Ashley miraculously call stating she wants to read me the notes from my claim; still waiting to hear back from Mohawk (she said that was her last note from May of 2025 which I did not even get that update until today February 27, 2026. I am frustrated to say the least. If I owed them money I would be in court if I did not pay. I love Mohawk product and considered them top of the line until now.

This builder is a giant rip off.

This builder is a giant rip off con artist. We had dead plants and neither the landscaper nor the warranty will replace or refund costs. We have giant gaping holes in the kitchen, main room, master bedroom, and master bathroom from the builder finishing everything with drywall tape!! Drywall tape? Really? The warranty guy refused to cover this repair. Instead, he stuck his finger in the hole with some kind of putty that made the drywall tape tear and become a hole the size of a golf ball! We have huge cracks in all of the bathroom tile from the caulking being junk. We have huge cracks in the kitchen tiles from the caulking being junk. They dropped paint all over the hardwood floors and told me to get on my hands and knees to scrape it off. The concrete block in front right before you reach the front door has a huge crack along with writing all over the concrete block. They refused to fix this. We have light coming in from the front door along with wind, dust, and bugs due to the door not reaching the jam ... another thing the builder refused to fix. This has been the worst experience of my life when purchasing a home. The builder used the cheapest materials possible. The toilet lids are no longer the same color as the toilet bowls. These all have to be replaced. You have to use a pumice stone to clean the toilets daily because the cheap toilets never stay clean and the rings are something I have never seen in my life before. This is just a horrible builder. They sell cheap houses with the cheapest materials; the landscaping consists of nothing but oleanders and 1 tree. The warranty guy told me the tree attracts termites and to cut it down!!! And of course, the warranty does not cover the loss. Save your money. Buy a house from any builder other than D B Horton. The overpriced houses with the pushiest of salesmen, and a warranty they do not honor, is just not worth the headaches and the costs. We bought this for $460k and have to put in over $20k with contractors and landscapers to fix the house well enough to put back on the market. I anticipate a loss on this house because who knows what the inspection report will find. DB Horton is not worth your time and definitely not worth your money. Use another builder.

Great experience

My experience was great from the time I met with the sales person at the neighborhood thru closing. I was very pleased. I had my 1 yr follow up also. Prior to my 1 yr follow up I hired my own home inspector to go thru the property. Minor things were found, and I gave the report to the person that was in charge of this area. ALL items on my list were addressed and corrected and a couple of things that the builder rep noticed too.
Having heard nightmare stories and reading reviews, I was skeptical, however, my inspector commented that my house was very well built. So thank you DRHORTON.

Do NOT purchase a D.R. Horton Home

I want to share my experience as a first-time homebuyer with D.R. Horton in Troy, AL.

My home cost over $350,000, and unfortunately it has been a very frustrating experience. Since moving in, I’ve dealt with multiple issues that should not be present in a newly built home. The yard has significant standing water every time it rains. After months of phone calls and submitting several warranty claims, a contractor finally came out — but only partially addressed the issue. One side of the yard was completed, while the other side was left half done, and the standing water problem still exists.

Inside the home, there are several cracks in the crown molding, as well as cracks forming along the upstairs wall corners. The shower has leaked water behind the wall, and I had to repeatedly request service before repairs were addressed. When I submitted my one-year warranty repair request, only certain items were completed, while others were left unresolved.

Communication has been extremely disappointing. Since my neighborhood (Oak Park) was established in 2023, there have reportedly been seven different superintendents assigned. Warranty requests often went unanswered, or I was told they were not received or that the team was too busy.

As a first-time buyer, this experience has been overwhelming and not worth the stress. I would not recommend purchasing a home from this builder based on my experience. After doing further research, I’ve also learned of other legal complaints involving D.R. Horton, which makes me wish I had documented every warranty request and taken stronger action sooner.

I share this so others can make informed decisions and carefully document everything throughout the homebuying process.

Don't trust quality of new construction, inspect it

I purchased D.R. Horton home in Lakeview Retreat Richmond, TX in 2022. The construction manager was pushy and was encouraging us not to conduct final inspection (insisting what could be wrong with the new home!). He said get it done at the end of Year 1 so any issues that may come up will get fixed before builder warranty expires. I moved in a tenant to the property and couldn't do final inspection, 3 years later when I was selling, the buyer found out that builder never installed flashing on both sides and roof was exposed to rain, hail, storms for these years. I submitted warranty request, assuming DR Horton will do what is right thing to do, they never responded to my request, I spent $3800 from my pocket to fix the issue!

Do not buy a DR Horton home

All the negative reviews I have read on here are totally correct. I am so sorry. I purchased a DR Horton home and need to sell and get out of here. There is so much negativity to write about, but I’m going to stop it here. You will have to do your homework very well, but I suggest you look for a more reputable builder.

Don’t fall for their BS.

They are quick to take your earnest money, give a super quick closing date, and then come up with all kinds of “conditions” they want you to meet before “final approval”. Now this was not our first house to purchase so I know underwriting is a pain but we already had approval from another lender. However, when DR Horton promised all kinds of “upgrades” if we went with their (in-house) lender, we agreed.
After telling us we were approved, we were told that we had to pay all of our Klarna and Affirm as well as take care of another matter before we could be approved? We were told to have it cleared prior to the closing. SO, we asked if it was possible to push out the closing date to give us the time to meet their “conditions”. We were initially told it would be no problem. Didn’t hear back for another two weeks. THEN when I tried to follow up to find out the new closing date, they told us we had to have it all taken care of within two days or they were cancelling our contract?!? Three weeks before the closing? WTAF? Now bear in mind, our payment would be less than what we are paying for rent now (and we are managing to pay it with all of Klarna and Affirm!!) We had BETTER get that $2K back or I might be reaching out to an attorney. BUT, based on the other reviews it looks like we dodged a $453K bullet.

DR Horton low quality home construction

We have lived in our DR Horton home which we purchased as new construction for 10 ½ years. We would never buy DR Horton again. It is obvious that DR Horton does not select sub contractors based on quality and has no process to evaluate them. Some of the work DR Horton’s people do is also subpar.

During our first year we discovered an opening had been left in the outside structure which was not found until a colony of bees had made a home in the attic. DR Horton refused to pay for the exterminator to eliminate the bees.

DR Horton performed a one time warranty repair to problems found within the first year accumulated and turned in on a list. The employee overseeing the repair work commented that he had never seen a list as long as what we submitted. One of the repairs was the flat portion of the roof over the back porch which had not been rubberized to withstand the Arizona heat. The repairs on that list were performed satisfactorily except for the seal on the bottom of the garage door which was never right until we replaced the whole system which is discussed below. Everything that follows from here was found subsequent to those repairs.

I am reviewing these many repairs that have been needed way too soon for a new house as we are starting our third day with no water as we wait for a plumber. A pipe in the attic was leaking above the laundry room, ruining that ceiling and who knows what else. I have been a home owner since 1979 and have never had to deal with this issue. This includes our last home where we lived for 17 years and was 53 years old when we moved. I am sure this problem is due to the cheap plastic plumbing we found out DR Horton used.

Last year we replaced our entire garage door system installed by Wayne Dalton after paying for several repairs earlier. The garage door safety sensors malfunctioned periodically for years. Turned out the wiring was sloppy and didn’t even have the correct number of wire nuts. The main spring had to be replaced. The repairman (not from Wayne Dalton) said he had been replacing them all over town. After that the door had begun to make a loud banging sound each time it was opened or closed. We decided to replace everything using the contractor who had made the repairs.

Our water heater was installed by The Sunny Plumber, now part of GOETTL in an orientation that prevented servicing the rod with sacrificial metal. Even though the tank was drained each year it had to be replaced after 7 years. Also the inlet and outlet lines were kinked when installed so it was lucky to have lasted as long as it did.

Our second year we began receiving annual service on our HVAC system from a provider in Tucson. Each year for the first 3 years additional problems were found in the installation performed by Chas Roberts. This included the hook up to the main breaker box.

Our second year an exhaust fan in the bathroom had to be replaced. This fan is 13 feet above the bathroom floor. The following year the regulating valve for one of the showers had to be replaced. Spacing between the plumbing, the shower insert and the supporting structure had been done in a haphazard manner by DR Horton increasing the difficulty of the repair. Neither of these should have needed to be replaced so soon after the house was built.

The light above the kitchen sink had to be replaced after 5 years. This was a bulb that was supposed to last at least 9 years. A telescoping device was used to change the bulb as it is 14 feet off the floor. After the bulb was changed and the device was being removed from the new bulb, the entire light canister came out of the ceiling because it had been installed in a sloppy manner.

During year 6 we had to replace the dishwasher which turned out to be the cheapest model GE dishwasher available. Earlier we had to replace the drive motor for the cheap GE microwave.

The front yard landscaping was pathetic. We discovered soon after we moved in that the rock was spread so thin it barely covered the dirt, no more than one stone thick. The plants were 3 cheap hop bushes that grow to 25 feet planted one foot in front of the front bedroom window and an even cheaper trashy Mesquite tree that shed pods all year. When we got our front yard landscaped by a local contractor the first job performed was to remove all the plants done by the original landscaper.

Misled Buyer

We purchased a new construction home that was heavily marketed around a 15-year tax abatement, with a clear emphasis on “low taxes” as a key benefit of buying in this development. What was not clearly explained during the sales process was that the property is also subject to a New Community Authority (NCA) assessment — a concept unfamiliar to many homeowners — which significantly offsets, and in our case can exceed, the expected tax savings from the abatement.

While an NCA addendum technically existed in the contract materials, its existence and real financial impact were never plainly explained or contextualized alongside the tax abatement messaging. At no point were we told that the combined effect of remaining property taxes and the NCA assessment could result in total charges comparable to, or higher than, what we might have paid without an abatement at all.

This feels less like a paperwork issue and more like a marketing and transparency problem. If a major selling point is “low taxes,” buyers deserve a clear, plain-language explanation of all tax-like assessments that materially affect the cost of ownership — especially when those assessments were already in place prior to purchase.

The home itself is fine, but the experience left us disappointed and far less confident that buyers are being given a complete picture up front. I would strongly encourage future buyers to ask detailed questions specifically about NCAs, special assessments, and how they interact with any advertised tax abatements.

Nice Sales, not so nice follow through

Then, you think you're simplifying the process by having your mortgage and insurance in one place - HA! My mortgage has changed hands two times since purchase 10 months ago. My insurance has three agencies listed. Everyone is so difficult to contact. The buying experience was great. The residual, not so much. Plus my mortgage went up almost $200 in one year. They way underestimate Escrow accounts. Terrible.
