Be ready for skeletons
My score should be 9/10 rather than 4/5. Up to my 70s I was mis-informed who my father was. Having used Ancestry to compile the stories of those from my (then) village who died in WW1, I decided to see if I could find out about the man I thought was my father. A DNA test pointed to some first cousins who had also had DNA tests. I managed to contact one of them and with his help managed to identify which of his uncles was my father. I contacted my suspected sister who agreed to tajke a DNA test, which proved that we were half-siblings. That's the positive side.
The negative has come when trying to identify my younger brother's father. Everything I have managed to get from open records on Ancestry points to the man I thought was my father being his father! The problem is that I cannot get that final DNA confirmation. Standing in my way is someone who identifies as my brother's first cousin. They do not have a tree and although quite active on Ancestry, will not respond to my requests for help.
Is that because they have found skeletons that they do not want to admit to? I don't know, but if you embark on family research you must be ready for some to pop out somewhere in the past.

Ancestry is the best for me
I tried different sites many years ago but found Ancestry to be the best and as time goes on they update records and expand the files available.
It is straight forward to use, has hints and drop lists for duplications, all life experiences like addresses and occupations.
There is always something to share with others and vice versa including a message forum to check and discuss details. Amazing.

I cannot access my account in full.
I cannot access my account in full as I am constantly told I am not a member. I manage to get onto ancestry by a roundabout route, but still unable to access all areas of records.
After 20 years membership I am considering ending my account and going to Find My Past instead.
I need useful help.

This specific error typically happens when a web browser holds onto outdated login data or when multiple account profiles exist under the same email address, causing the system to route you into a secondary or un-subscribed profile instead of your main account. To resolve this, you can try clearing your browser's cache and cookies to remove old session data, or try logging into Ancestry directly through an Incognito or Private browsing window. Once signed in, you can click your profile icon in the top right corner and select Account Settings to verify that the email listed matches your primary account with the active subscription and take note of your username so you can sign in with that instead going forward.

The dna testing is a rip off
The dna testing is a rip off, you get all these ancestors coming up but 90% of them don't have a family tree or they have restricted access. Also they need to update the death registration each year, it only goes to 2024. Another thing if I put uk I don't want America scrolling through all that lot is a nightmare. I tend to use the familysearch.org more and it's free

Hello Gay. We are sorry for the frustration that this has caused you. Some members do not like to have family trees and keep their information private. It is not a requirement to have a family tree or their information public to do a DNA test. It makes it easier to see who you are related to and the research easier, but it is not required. We also can not update the death registery national death registries on a simple annual schedule for three primary reasons: federal privacy laws, state-level privacy restrictions, and data acquisition contracts. We hope this information helps.

Hi Kathy. Thank you for your review. We completely understand how annoying it is to constantly face "prove you're not a robot" checks while trying to research, and how frustrating it is to sift through irrelevant hints.
Repeated bot verification prompts usually happen when security filters misinterpret rapid page clicks or certain browser settings (like active VPNs or heavy ad-blockers) as automated traffic. Disabling your VPN or clearing your browser's cookies and cache often resolves this issue. As for inaccurate hints, you can quickly clear irrelevant record suggestions from your tree by opening the hint and clicking Ignore or Reject.

An excellent site to gain a wealth of information
The amount of information I've gained from Ancestry is amazing. I've been using the site for the last 20 years and have learnt so much about my family's history and how they branched off to different cities or countries around the world. I would definitely recommend it to anyone starting on family research or anyone who wants to take their research a step further.

well i have just restarted my ancestry…
well i have just restarted my ancestry research after 10+years and lost my email address as from NTL world and found it dificult to get my research back on track as every thing is to be paid for but i have had a good experience talking to leaf 🍃 they were so helpful in there response and put me on the right track ,cannot thank them enough

Ancestry is a well known established genealogy website with a great wealth of information and an ideal to learn about your families, as well as the History over the years, and I recommend DNA testing too, as I have found an Irish birth father, unfortunately didn't meet, but fortunately my Irish family found me through DNA, plus there's a choice of susbscription to fit in with any budget.

Ancestry is mostly brilliant...
Ancestry has been brilliant in helping me to build my family tree. Without the records, information and hints provided with readily available access it would have been much more difficult and time consuming, as it would no doubt involve a lot of hassle, travel and expense to accumulate all the information. The only downside for me has been that its been quite difficult to learn how to use the website. There are some guidelines available through Ancestry and someindiduals have produced some helpful utube videos but it has still been quite tricky at times. Its worth persevering though as its impossible to describe the joy and excitement when you succeed in tracing another of your ancestors!

Great tool for discovering your history
It has a wealth of data available and provides some very useful hints. My key frustration is with its search function which does not seem able to distinguish surname changes for married women.

Because women's surnames often changed upon marriage, our search algorithm is designed to account for both maiden and married names, though we understand that this can lead to some frustration. A helpful workaround in the meantime is to leave the surname field blank and search using her spouse's name under the "Spouse" relationship filter, or use exact-match search toggles for maiden names. That said, your feedback about making this distinction more seamless is incredibly valuable, and we'll be sharing it directly with our product team to help improve our search tools.
Pointless DNA test
Did the DNA test. Results do not match in anyway with my own family research. Close matches I already knew as they are cousins, most matches don't have a family tree so pointless.

We completely understand how frustrating it must be that your results don't seem to line up with the paper trail you've worked so hard to build. While it can be discouraging when DNA matches don't attach public family trees, you can often use shared matches—comparing who you and an unknown match have in common—to group them into specific branches of your tree. Furthermore, ethnicity estimates reflect deep genetic origins spanning hundreds of years, which don't always align directly with more recent paper records or cultural identity. Remember, DNA does not respect borders and modern political boundaries do not always accurately represent relationships between different regions. Heavy migration over the last few hundred years and subsequent inter- marrying means that DNA for some regions can be particularly admixed, especially with closely related regions. Remember our test does not test for nationality, and oftentimes the regions in ones results might not match their nationality or the nationality of their ancestors.
Even with a perfect knowledge of the history of your ancestors, DNA can still show some unexpected results because of the random nature of inheritance. Because DNA recombines randomly each generation, close relatives can also inherit different mix-and-match percentages from your shared ancestors. Disgraceful tactics when cancelling subscription
Disgraceful tactics, when trying to cancel subscription, you click on cancel subscription and it takes you to another page describing what they do. But then at the very bottom of this screen it asks you again if you want to cancel and a reason, then asks you again are you sure. I thought I cancel 6 months ago, until I checked my bank statements. My bad.
