The basic idea is a good one. It is now rather expensive if you want to carry out any but the most basic genealogical research. I wouldn't mind if the software was kept up-to-date. Unfortunately, the platform is hopelessly clunky, with numerous annoying glitches and bugs. To give only 1 star would be unfair, but Ancestry.co.uk has fallen way behind the times and needs a radical overhaul of the entire platform.

Generally easy to use but the hints are often nonsense as they duplicate existing knowledge of close relatives

I have found very little for the money I have sprnt. Many of the hints lead to newspapers that you need to subscribe to before you cannsee the hint. Very irritating. You also keep repeating the hints and calling them
new hints. You have very limited military history, both American and British. Also your search function is frustrating for a specific person. It gives you many names tat don’t match the name you entered. Often waste of time looking through many pages of names.

At the moment I find Ancestry very irritating. They keep feeding me hints about information I already. And in particular the hint says I don't have a marriage date, which I do in fact have

Too too expensive need to give discounts to members who have subscribed for years. Cannot afford next subs

I have been tracing my family for a long time and Ancestry has enabled me to grow my tree finding family in Australia just from a story handed down that a "cousin " had emigrated and started a family.From there things rapidly progressed and other branches of my surname appeared along with my maternal side.None of this would have been possible without Ancestry.

Vast database, with additional input from other researchers. Regular "Hints" with helpful suggestions providing supporting records and other possible connections. So addictive and easy to lose yourself investigating your ancestors and other relatives!

Good access to a variety of sources. Like all 'genealogists' we have to be practised in reading between the lines. Mis-spellings, dialect and other factors have to be taken into account.
Happy to advise potential errors, we are not infallible and hope that helps others.
One negative is having to pay for extra services, some military records and newspaper articles. Thankfully I have access to other websites and these are included.

Easy to use. Easy to find documents and records.

I'm happy with ancestry but my daughter results keep not showing up apparently she has 25 half sibs but because she's not up like u promised sge can't see them her name is Megan Weller from corscombe please sort it out for her as promised

Since first enrolling with Ancestry, geneaology has become my main hobby, and has led to some amazing discoveries, unknown relatives, trips across the world and all from a simple chat with my late father many years ago now, asking him if he knew his grandfather, his reply...knew my grandfather, I barely knew my own father, dad was evacuated from Portsmouth as WW2 broke out and never returned to his home town to live .
His father, had`s sisters,my father or his sister who is still living close to Portsmouth knew of any of them.
This started my search for family history not only on my late parents sides of the family but also my wife`s family again both on her late fathers and mother`s sides.
On my father`s side I discovered several members had emigrated to Australia, and have a cousin still living there with her family, another cousin living with his family in Canada, we have visited Australia but not Canada, my late father was 94 when he passed away and it was a great honour to him to find he had lived longer than any other direct males members of the family.
Through my late mother`s side of the family 1 of my favourite descriptions of 1 member is of a Woodman working in the woods and that through my late Nan`s father`s family I am directly linked to the sister of Ann Boleyn, she of Henry V111 fame, mother of Queen Victoria, her sister was supposedly one of Henry`s mistresses!!!
On my wife`s side of the family we found many unknowns on her late father`s line, on her late mother`s line found full details of a great great grandfather who owned a manor house where Oliver Cromwell apparently stayed a night and the same Manor house much later owned by a certain Mick Jagger
My interest and of always talking to relatives and friends has led me to now manage 8 trees for them as well as my own, I update every one on a daily basis, my family tree including my wife`s family now includes over 6,400 People and almost 3,500 photos

Some recommendations are good but many are so obvious and don't require Ancestry to point them out. Find the hard things not the easy ones. One negative point is receiving multiple emails in German language and even after requesting at least 10 times to stop sending mails in German, these requests are simply ignored and undoubtedly will be ignored here too !.

I have been with Ancestry for many years and their website has enabled me to trace my family line back to the 1700's. My experience undertaking research has always been extremely good with excellent online guidance and help.

Ancestry is one of the best genealogical sites that I have found and is not too expensive to use regularly. It helps with things like where your ancestors lived and what they did for a living. I have found distant relatives on Ancestry, that I wouldn't have known about without the site and we are now in regular contact. If you come across transcript errors in things like Census Forms, there is a method for correcting them and if Ancestry get things wrong, then correction is, again, fairly easy. On the whole it's a fun experience and makes a great hobby more interesting and enjoyable. I have recommended it to several friends and distant family.

I had been looking for my father’s family to no avail for years, as a last resort did an Ancestry DNA kit and not only found my father’s family but also a half brother I did not know anything about, I love Ancestry it is so easy to navigate and has given me family I didn’t even know about.

I have used Ancestry for years and have researched most of the branches of my extended family. I have found that it always pays to recheck your brick walls as more and more information is added all the time.
Wouldn't be without it

The DNA Ancestry service solved a major mystery for me.
I had known for many years that the person I thought was my grandfather was not in fact my grandfather, but I had no clues at all to help me find my real grandfather.
I eventually did a DNA test, and it took a long time for any real results to emerge, but eventually they started to come to light when my real grandfather's other descendents also took part in the DNA service.
It is quite a long story but eventually 3 of the DNA links to me all pointed to one man. I now know who he was and a great deal about his life.
The second factor was the extensive hints coming from Ancestry to me, which means that I have now discovered my family history on my grandfather's side back as far as the early 1500s.
Brilliant.

I thought I came from Yorkshire and with an uncommon surname it would be easy. I found my ancestors in Derbyshire and Northamptonshire! I found one tried for murder and relatives in USA, Canada and Australia. It is great to chat on line with distant relatives.
