Worst car rental experience PLEASE AVOID Cargini
We booked a car through Cargini for a one-week holiday in Greece, expecting a straightforward rental experience. Unfortunately, it turned into a nightmare.
After just 30 minutes, the tire went flat. We had to wait 4 hours for a tow truck, and the spare wheel provided wasn’t even suitable for the vehicle. The tow truck driver also told us that the tire was already damaged.
We had taken full insurance, so thankfully we didn’t have to pay for the tire issue. However, the problems didn’t stop there: the tire kept losing pressure, we had to check and refill it several times, and the tire pressure sensor wasn’t working. Five days later, despite barely using the car, the tire went flat again and we had to call another tow truck.
We lost a huge amount of time and part of our holiday was ruined. What was particularly frustrating was the attitude of the staff. In our experience, they were unpleasant and manipulative, presenting things that appeared to be basic obligations ( such as arranging a taxi after leaving us on the side of the road) as if they were exceptional acts of kindness.
Based on our experience, we strongly recommend avoiding Cargini. We would never rent from them again and would advise anyone planning a trip to Greece to think twice before giving them their money.

Although the initial problem was not determined to be the result of a vehicle defect, we nevertheless arranged and covered the cost of a taxi as a gesture of goodwill and customer care.
Following a thorough inspection, it was established that the wheel rim had sustained damage. Based on the findings, this type of damage is consistent with an external impact during the rental period rather than a pre-existing mechanical fault. For this reason, responsibility for the rim damage could not be attributed to the rental company.
That said, we understand the frustration caused by the breakdowns and the time lost during your trip. Our team made every effort to provide assistance as quickly as possible and to ensure you could continue your journey safely. We regret that our efforts did not meet your expectations and appreciate your feedback, as it helps us improve our service.

Extremely poor
Had to swap the car we originally had. It was a downgrade from what we'd paid. After driving it to the other side of the island, there was a really strong smell of fuel coming from the air con and it struggled with 1st gear.
Contacted our broker who told us to speak to the local office, he wasn't happy. Told us it was our fault for not getting the right sized car and I was "too sensitive" to smells. No my friend, I may look dumb but I know what fuel smells like. No car should ever smell of fuel whilst driving.
There was a mention from the broker of a partial refund. None of this was offered on changing the car.

Rented a mini van. What a wreck, had dents and scratches on virtually every panel. It had done nearly 250,000 miles, every time you went round a corner it sounded like the wheel bearings were shot. The service/ spanner light came on, informed the company and they said it’ll be fine just keep driving it. Started being temperamental when stating it like the starter motor being sticky or immobolizer playing up. Was cheap but for a reason

Wir haben das Auto wie vereinbart mit vollem Tank und keiner Beschädigung fristgerecht abgegeben und warten nun - 30 Tage später - immer noch auf die Rückerstattung der Kaution in Höhe von 650€. Es ist traurig, dass man allem Anschein nach auch dieser Firma nicht vertrauen kann - so etwas kann einem den ganzen Urlaub im Nachhinein Kaputt machen. Vielleicht ist ja nun auf diesem Weg Besserung in Sicht und wir bekommen endlich unser Geld zurück!

They almost forced us to Pay the full insurance because they didn’t want to change the driver. The credit card that has to be used for the deposit must be at the name of the driver.
The employee were sooooo mean to us, despit our huge distress.
They gave us a car that was very very damaged (bad seatbelt for the driver that didn’t work 100% of the Time, the engine cover under the car was broken and scrapped the pavement, the sheet metal of the car in poor condition, etc)

We would like to clarify that our terms and conditions explicitly state that cards issued by online banks cannot be accepted for the blocking of the security deposit. This requirement applies specifically to the security deposit procedure and is clearly stated in our terms.
For this reason, our colleagues in Tirana advised you to contact the broker directly so that they could explain the available options to you. Alternatively, you were offered the option of purchasing the full coverage, under which no security deposit would be required.
The purchase of full coverage was entirely optional, and you were free to decline it and proceed with the alternative option provided through the broker.
We would also like to make it clear that, as a company, we do not use pressure-selling practices to promote additional products. Review of Sofia Airport Car Rental
Pros:
Budget-friendly rental prices.
Airport pick-up is convenient. They meet you at the airport and then take you to their rental facility, which is located in a large construction/industrial area.
Cons:
The cars are generally quite old and show considerable wear and tear.
The biggest concern is the vehicle inspection when returning the car.
When returning the vehicle, the agent inspected it extremely thoroughly—literally lying down underneath the car, checking the bonnet, every panel, crease and border, and running his finger over areas looking for scratches or damage.
The problem is that this level of inspection is not done at the beginning of the rental. They do not provide a detailed written record of every existing scratch, touch-up or minor damage. They also do not provide a disclaimer acknowledging that customers cannot reasonably inspect areas such as the underside of the vehicle.
As a result, they can potentially identify a small scratch or touch-up that you were completely unaware of and claim that you caused it.
If you disagree with their assessment, you may be asked to produce your own photos or videos to prove that the damage was already there. This can put you in a very difficult situation, particularly when you are running late for your flight and depend on them for the airport transfer.
Another concern is the repair charges. For a simple scratch, they may ask you to sign a repair charge starting from €499.
Considering that these are older vehicles with numerous existing scratches and touch-ups, it is practically impossible for a customer to spend two hours documenting every single mark before driving away. You could easily miss one.
Then, on return, the agent can point out multiple areas of damage and expect you to prove that they were already present. If you missed documenting even one small scratch—perhaps underneath the car or in an area that was difficult to inspect—you could potentially become liable for another €500 or more.
My opinion
The pricing may look attractive initially, but the potential damage charges are a major concern.
It gives the impression that the business model may not rely solely on rental income, but also significantly on charging customers for pre-existing minor damage that was not properly documented at the beginning of the rental.
My advice: be extremely careful. If you rent from them, take extensive photos and videos of the entire vehicle before leaving—including the underside as far as reasonably possible—and make sure every existing damage is formally documented and acknowledged by the company.
Otherwise, that attractive rental price could become very expensive very quickly.

Tricky way to handle damages
They don't use register of car's damages. Instead, when you pick up the car they do a car check with you and mark damages which you spotted on clean report. If you miss something - easy money for them.

Sono stato truffato. Pur non avendo causato danni all’auto, mi sono trovato con un addebito di 350€ sulla carta di credito. Fate attenzione soprattutto se Cargini affida il noleggio a Kouvalite; il personale dí Kouvalite non ha nemmeno controllato l’auto al momento della restituzione e non ha voluto rilasciare una ricevuta. Era tutto premeditato sin dall’origine. Evitate Cargini ed evitate soprattutto Kouvalite. Ovviamente rispondono che hanno seguito la procedura e che sono dispiaciuti, ma non mi hanno fornito nessuna prova del danno che dicono essere stato causato: niente foto, niente fatture. È tutto questo nonostante avessi sottoscritto una polizza aggiuntiva per la copertura dei danni. Non fidatevi di questa compagnia; spendete qualcosa di più e puntate sulle compagnie internazionali serie, soprattutto in Grecia. Alla fine avrete speso meno.
30/8/26 - Aggiornamento. Rivedo positivamente la mia recensione perchè, pur rimanendo l'accaduto, devo riconoscere che Cargini ha riconosciuto l'errore ed effettuato l'intero rimborso di quanto precedentemente addebitato. Un grazie particolare a Martha del customer care che si è prodigata per la risoluzione del caso. Quattro stelle e non cinque perché Cargini deve migliorare le procedure e selezionare meglio i partner a cui si affida per evitare ad altri circostanze spiacevoli come la mia.

Overall
Overall, the experience went very well. The cars are new, although quite basic. They don’t have GPS, and the USB port is the older type rather than USB-C, even in cars that are only 2 or 3 years old. This meant that I had to buy cables and power banks to explore the island, as the car couldn’t charge my phone while I was using it for GPS navigation. The distances on the island are quite long, so this was a bit inconvenient.
At the end, I was charged an extra fee for cleaning. I didn’t really understand this charge. I had been told that if the car was very dirty, an extra fee would apply, but honestly, I didn’t think the car was particularly dirty. In fact, I even vacuumed it at the hotel on the last day, haha. 😅 But anyway, it was only around €15, I think.
Apart from that, everything was excellent. The people were very friendly and welcoming, both at check-in and check-out. The only thing I felt was missing was some additional information about the car when it was handed over.
Overall, I was very happy with the experience and would use the service again.

Réserver plusieurs mois à l’avance, nous avons eu un retard sur le vol qui a demander à décaler l’horaire de prise en charge de 2h. Ce qui nous a amener à une re facturation 4x plus chère. Etat des lieux fait par eux même en cochant des cases qui ne devrait pas l’être. Ex : plein d’essence cocher comme « plein » alors que non. Pression sur la clientèle, à fuir !!!!

Suite à seulement 1 heure de retard de notre vol, notre véhicule a été automatiquement annulé, sans aucun remboursement. Nous nous sommes retrouvés sur le trottoir, sans solution.
Une simple vérification de l'état du vol, dont ils avaient connaissance, aurait pourtant permis de constater que l'avion était en retard. Aucun geste commercial, aucune négociation : selon eux, nous sommes les seuls responsables. Il aurait fallu les appeler… sans même avoir la certitude qu'ils auraient conservé notre réservation.
Résultat : ils conservent le montant de notre location et, dans le même temps, relouent le véhicule près de trois fois plus cher.
Quand un avion est en retard, cela semble malheureusement être une opération très rentable pour eux, mais certainement pas une façon de traiter correctement leurs clients.

We would like to clarify the circumstances surrounding your rental and the terms that were applied in this case.
First of all, regarding the fuel policy, the rental conditions applied were fully in line with the terms clearly stated on your voucher. The policy is “same to same”, meaning that the vehicle must be returned with the same fuel level as at the time of pick-up. It is possible that, by mistake, our partner incorrectly marked the vehicle as having a full tank at the time of pick-up.
According to our partner, you arrived at the rental office 2 hours and 20 minutes after the scheduled pick-up time. Upon your arrival, you were informed that you had not notified us of your delay and that no flight number had been provided in the reservation. Consequently, our partner had no means of anticipating a potential flight delay or adjusting the pick-up time accordingly.
As clearly specified in the Terms & Conditions, the applicable grace period is 59 minutes. Your arrival was well beyond this period, and therefore the original reservation could no longer be honoured under the agreed conditions.
Nevertheless, as a gesture of assistance, you were offered the possibility of making a new rental with a different cost and vehicle category, which you declined.
We would also like to respectfully point out that, while we fully understand that a customer may be dissatisfied with the outcome of a rental, expressions such as “scam”, “pressure on the customer”, and “to be avoided” are particularly strong and do not accurately reflect the circumstances of your case. We believe that feedback and reviews should remain factual, fair and respectful, especially when the applicable conditions have been clearly communicated in advance and have been applied accordingly.

Attention à fuir. À fuir!!! Attention 2h de retard et on te dit que ta réservation est annulée et que tu ne trouvera pas d’autres locations chez les autres loueurs. Mais comme par hasard eux ils en ont une la même que louée initialement 3 fois plus cher. Ils te disent que c’est le courtier qui a annulé la réservation mais le nouveau contrat plus cher est bien au nom de cargini. Tu changes l’horaire de restitution = refacturation. État des lieux fait avant la prise en main du véhicule avec beaucoup d’éléments abîmés qui n’ont pas été cochés. On te dit que le plein d’essence est fait alors que non. Prendre tout en photos aussi bien l’extérieur que l’intérieur. Ne signez pas l’état des lieux avant de l’avoir fait A fuir ! Résultat 1000 euros de frais supplémentaires

First of all, regarding the delay, according to the information provided by our local partner, you arrived at the rental office approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes after the scheduled pick-up time. We would also like to point out that we received no notification from you regarding the flight delay, and no flight number had been provided in the reservation. As a result, our partner had no way of anticipating your late arrival or being aware of the delay in advance.
As clearly stated in the rental Terms & Conditions, the applicable grace period is 59 minutes. Since your arrival was well beyond this period, the original reservation could no longer be honoured under the initial conditions. The reservation was therefore treated as a no-show, and the vehicle was automatically released and made available for a new booking.
Nevertheless, our partner offered you the possibility of making a new rental at a different price. As this was a last-minute rental, the applicable price was naturally considerably higher than the rate of the original reservation, which had been made several months earlier. We would also like to clarify that this alternative was offered to you by our partner as an available option and was not presented as an obligation.
Regarding the damages you mentioned, the vehicle's condition and any existing damages are recorded on the check-out form by the rental agent at the time of collection. In addition, customers are encouraged to take photographs and videos of the vehicle before leaving the rental location. In fact, our partner specifically encouraged you to do so. This is an important precaution for both parties and helps avoid any uncertainty at the time of return regarding whether any damage was already present when the vehicle was collected.
Finally, we would like to respectfully point out that we understand your frustration regarding the circumstances of the rental. However, terms such as “scam” and “to be avoided” are particularly strong and, based on the information available to us, do not accurately reflect the circumstances of this case. The applicable rental conditions were communicated in advance, and the handling of the reservation was based on those agreed terms.
