I recently went through the onboarding process with Redwoods Dowling Kerr as I’m looking to find a buyer for my business, and I’ve been really impressed from the outset.

I had a meeting a couple of months ago with Jarid and he was genuinely warm, funny, approachable, and incredibly helpful throughout. He took the time to understand my situation, explained everything clearly, and made the whole process feel straightforward and well-structured rather than overwhelming.

That initial experience gave me real confidence in moving forward with the company as a whole. The onboarding process has felt smooth, professional, and supportive, and I’ve felt in safe hands at every stage so far.

On my first initial contact over telephone, the conversation was handled sensitively and with care.. I felt I was listened too and that a personal approach was provided.
On meeting with Jordan Turner at my nursery, I was pleasantly impressed with his attitude, personality and professionalism along with the amount of research that he had done, who clearly knew my nursery very well. Our final meeting was just as effective as our first.. Jordan is a really lovely guy.. who is very knowledgeable around the sector, I have enjoyed our interactions and feel have benefitted greatly from these.

I consider Redwoods Dowling Kerr to operate in a way that is deceptive and highly misleading to sellers.  Only a court can determine whether their service meets the legal threshold of being a scam; however, the overwhelming feeling I have been left with is that I have been scammed.

The contract, the service, and the £4,800 “marketing contribution” are all presented in a way that does not reflect reality.

During the sales process I was subjected to aggressive and persistent pressure to sign up. Numerous promises were made about how the business would be handled, the structure of the organisation, and the level of service I would receive. None of this has proven to be true.

My concerns about timing were dismissed outright. I was told they knew what they were doing and that the business would be sold (completed) within a few months, and that it needed to go on the market immediately. This advice was wrong.

There were multiple meetings prior to signing where I provided detailed information about the business. These meetings appear to have been purely to secure the contract, as none of that information was passed on to the broker responsible for the sale. That broker showed no interest in understanding even basic aspects of the business.  Nor did he attempt to answer basic buyer enquiries himself but rather operated like an overpriced messaging service.

I was promised monthly updates. In over five months, I have not received a single one.

I was repeatedly chased for information on the basis that “buyers were asking for it”. This turned out to be completely untrue.

I paid £4,800 as a “contribution towards marketing”. The marketing consisted of two online listings and a short, poor-quality PDF which I was asked to correct and ultimately rewrite myself. I was also told professional photography would be arranged, but after signing was asked to provide my own photos. This does not come close to justifying the fee charged.

When I gave 60 days’ notice to terminate the contract at the end of the minimum term, this was refused. They then asserted an interpretation of the contract that prevents notice being given until after the minimum term has ended, effectively creating a further two-month lock-in that is not stated anywhere in the contract and was never explained.

The reason this matters is because the structure of the contract heavily favours them. They only need to introduce a potential buyer to later claim substantial commission, even if the business becomes saleable due to future improvements entirely unrelated to their work, and them contributing nothing towards securing a sale. Extending the contract therefore gives them a clear commercial advantage while delivering no corresponding benefit to the seller.

This was escalated to the Operations Director, who ignored all concerns raised about the service provided and failed to address or even acknowledge, any of them. Instead, the matter was referred to their legal team, who have still not provided any response despite repeated chasing over a period of nearly 6 weeks.

The contract also contains minimum penalty charges of £20,000 if they consider you to be “uncooperative”. I had this specifically limited to the speed of providing information, but without that safeguard this clause is extremely open to interpretation. In a situation where they are unable to sell your business, it is entirely conceivable that they could seek to rely on this clause to claim £20,000 by alleging lack of cooperation. Given their current willingness to advance interpretations of the contract that are not actually set out in the contract - such as asserting that notice to terminate cannot be given until after the minimum term - there is a real concern about how broadly they might choose to define “uncooperative” in practice, regardless of what was said during the sales process.

This company relies heavily on contractual wording to protect itself while delivering very little in return. My experience has been one of misleading sales tactics, poor service, and a complete lack of accountability.

I would strongly advise anyone to avoid this brokerage.  Anyone who signs with them should have their own commercial contracts lawyer advise them about the contract first.
