The instruction email about shuttle bus between airport and lucky rental is great, so I don't need to find the information myself.

The service was great.
Check in and return process are easy.

The car seems old but all in good condition.

Easy going customer service

Unfortunately, our experience with this camper rental in New Zealand was very disappointing. The van was extremely dirty when we picked it up and already partly broken. Many parts were heavily rusted, which raised serious concerns about safety and maintenance.

There were several technical defects: the window could not be opened or closed properly, the gear shift kept getting stuck, and the overall condition felt very worn down. One of the biggest issues was a broken seal on the van that had come loose. During the night, when it rained, water leaked inside and the bed got wet, which made sleeping very uncomfortable.

What makes this even more unacceptable is that my partner was injured inside the van. There was sharp metal exposed in several places, and my partner cut his skin on it, causing bleeding. This is a serious safety hazard and should never happen in a rental vehicle.

The more damage we discovered, the clearer it became that most issues had simply been covered up with tape instead of being properly repaired. This gave the strong impression that problems were hidden rather than fixed.

The glove compartment was completely broken out, allowing a direct view into the engine bay. Everything behind it was badly rusted, which was quite shocking to see.

We are only giving 2 stars because, despite all these issues, we did not break down and had no major roadside panne. However, for the price and expectations of a camper rental in New Zealand, this condition is unacceptable. We would not rent here again and cannot recommend it unless major improvements are made.

Lucky rentals... Where to start!
If I could give minus stars I would! We picked up our camper van from Christchurch and were extremely excited to travel to Kaikoura! We stopped for fuel and upon getting back into the car, the car reeked. We thought maybe there was old fuel in the tank. Getting to our first destination we realised our fridge was not working. We called customer services and they were very unhelpful! We had to make do without a fridge for 5days.

Long story short, we went to a mechanic in Hokitika (which cost us a 5hr detour), to help fix our fridge! Turns out our battery was about to explode. The smell we smelt originally was the fumes coming from the battery! My partner and I are extremely lucky the campervan did not blow up in our sleep (mechanics words). Word of advice demand to check ALL appliances before leaving the facility. We showed a member of staff upon our return and in his words "he had never seen a battery bulge that badly before"!!

The camper was very old with a lot of miles; at one point he died and never turned on again: a very nice New Zealand boy helped us repair the breakdown by talking on the phone with assistance. From the sliding door seal came the rain that wet the bed. The toilet was leaking during transfers and cleaning was not the best: we found a used paper plate behind a seat. But what's worse is that when we wrote an email to report these problems and ask for a partial refund, we found ourselves in front of a rubber wall.

The toilet was not empty and it leaked all through the camper van, at 2am I was cleaning up old stale urine it was discusting. The van had black mould near the front passenger side. the breaks and rotors were terrifying coming down the hills, very intense shaking and wobbling! Felt very unsafe.

The camper van we hired had issues.
1. The sliding side door would not open from the inside, we had to climb over the front seat to get out.
2. We had cockroaches coming out from under the gas stove.
3. The window wipers didn't work properly.
When we returned the van we pointed out these issues. We were not angry we just wanted them to make sure no one else got the van without it being fixed. They were very apologetic and let us know they would pass it on to management and we would receive an email from them. That was 3 weeks ago and we still haven't heard anything. Dont get me wrong we had a fantastic holiday.

Our van had a lot of problems:
• the battery wasn’t working at first
• the fridge wouldn’t work unless we had been driving for 24 hours
• the gas wasn’t very powerful, to the point that we had to turn back during our trip to get it repaired
• an engine warning light kept appearing and disappearing
• the brakes were in poor condition, to the point that they were smoking for 30 minutes after a downhill drive
• the van had no power going uphill, which was quite dangerous
• the interior was still dirty and quite worn
• the toilet door kept opening and banging against the cabinet opposite at every turn

The person who checked us in in Auckland was brilliant. I wish I remembered her name as she made the experience so smooth and friendly.
The camper itself was much more ‘tired’ than I expected. The side sliding door would not open from the inside, this was often frustrating.
This may sound silly but not having cup holders in the middle console was very frustrating.
We did not have a cutting knife - quite inconvenient (tried at two stores to buy one but didn’t have any luck)
The bedding was great.
It drove really well (good marketing for Toyota for a vehicle with 470,000 km on it!!🤩)
I’d say that given the age of the van and the little inconveniences, the value wasn’t quite there for me.

It was an very old campervan,dirty and the cooking gas was empty after the first day. It smells bad inside and it was dirty.

The Van wasn't waterproof. The stove didn't worked well. The windscreen wiper was faulty and a nail was sticking out of the wall.

Das Auto war mit 430.000 km ein bisschen alt. Es war technisch aber ok nicht wir hatten keine Probleme.

The after-sales service was deplorable when we had an incident with the driver’s door of the van, which wasn’t our fault. They agreed to replace the van, but they’re asking us to repay the insurance for the remaining days with the new van. It was absolutely not worth taking the maximum insurance. Our interactions with the team in charge were very disappointing.

Staff was very kindly and pleasant.
The van was black, probably the only one, a not convenient colour on this season.
They let us glasses in bad position, only driving on a highway broke one

We rented the Lucky Rover for over a month and never got a problem with the car's performance. However, need some improvement in some of interior of the campervan.

The tap was upside down so it was a bit hard for us to use it. The upper bed was so small and so hard to sleep in. Note that the car doesn't have a bluetooth so you need to get one to connect your phone to the car stereo.

Overall, because the card didn't have any issues with the performance. I would give it a solid four and would rent again.

The trip was amazing and was not possible without lucky rentals. However there were a few defects on the van that made it quite uncomfortable at times. In the end we got compensation so well resolved and left rather satisfied.
