Great winter road trip
We had a lovely winter road trip with Lucky Rentals and overall we're happy with our experience! Communication was quick and easy throughout and whenever we had questions, we received quick and helpful responses. We had some trouble getting the gas working at first, but we managed to sort it out with help through the whatsapp number provided. Having both a toilet and shower was a real luxury (although we mostly used the toilet). The kitchen, toilet and large water tank meant that we could almost exclusively stay at freedom camps, which was perfect. The vans are older and the engine isn't the strongest, but everything worked and we had an amazing road trip!

I am a return customer for the Happy Camper Sleeper van RODEO. This van was a slightly older model than the last van I had in July 26. However, the driving experience was still as good as my first hire. The convenience of having a bed and privacy curtains in the back of the van is wonderful. I had trouble with the van bed due to not realising how the layout of the van worked. Lol. You know what you know. I have since been shown by the friendly staff. Hire was an easy process. The location is easy to find. The staff on both occasions have been very friendly and helpful. I have booked again for the December period this year. My only gripes are that they don't seem to offer any hire discounts for return customers. Pick up from the airport was a bit confusing for the off season. Overall one of the better hire companies I have used in NZ.

Was a great experience with a friendly team!
Had an amazing 5 day trip in the Lucky Rover campervan! The staff were very friendly and kind and everything was well communicated, making the experience super easy.
The van itself was epic! Having a full kitchen, gas cooker, every piece of cooking equipment, toilet, 2 double beds as well as 5 seats was such a treat!
The weather was pretty snowy at times on the roads so we were grateful to have a warm space with lights and heating.
I’d definitely recommend, honestly I don’t have any complaints or issues, overall was great condition allowing a fun trip away. So cool to have a hike on wheels 😊

Great inexpensive van rental, would rent again!
We got a van from Lucky Rentals in Auckland, Dec 2025-Jan2026 in NZ. Since we were there a whole month, we were looking for a more affordable option that could fit 2 adults and 2 children. Lucky rentals was easy to book with, less than 1/2 the price of competitors. The staff was helpful and friendly. They use older model Jucy vans, and paint them white, which is nice to blend in more, and the reason is much cheaper. Our van was very clean, a little funky because of its age, but got us all around north island, South Island, and back up to Auckland with absolutely no issues. The beds were surprisingly comfortable, it just required a lot of shuffling luggage and food etc around each night to get beds ready for 4 people. We cooked in it/bathroom/washing minimally, just so we wouldn’t have to deal with clean up in the van which is a very small space. But it was great when we weren’t at a Holiday park. I would highly recommend Lucky if you’re looking for an inexpensive option, don’t want to stick out like a sore thumb, and don’t mind an older vehicle. Dropping off, you’ll want to have already eaten or disposed of anything you’re not taking with you, because they will not take it.

Great Staff Great Vehicle- good price
The handover and dropoff of the vehicle was made very easy by the staff. Pickup from the airport was super quick within 15 mins of calling the team even though we were early. Vehicle was in great condition. Only recommendation is to bring plenty of blankets if travelling in winter- we had the Linen pack but van had tendency to freeze even inside.

Very professional with pickup and drop-off. Was easy to extend the van rental and contact Lucky Rentals if needed. Well equipped with everything required to enjoy the van life experience.
Possibly was just the van I ended up with, but found the interior a bit dirty when I first picked it up. Ended up wiping things down and detailing it myself to enjoy a clean start. Understand you want the van dropped off clean, but should ensure it is a fresh rental and clean - like any other car rental. Overall great experience and van rental :)
Found the mattress in the van I had was a bit uncomfortable as they would spread apart, was only other thing that didn’t work for me. Make sure to choose one with one intact mattress, not multiple pads joined together

Not happy with the service
Hi, I would like to make a complaint about the vehicle we hired-
-There was a leak in the roof of the van causing our bed to get wet, very disappointing
-Front wipers were not working properly, causing our trip delays due to having to pull over every time it rained, again very disappointing
-Back wiper was not working at all
-The driver window was very hard to wind back up
-The door handle of the boot was loose causing it to fall off, leaving only the outside to open boot, again very disappointing
-Roof vent blew open while vehicle was parked causing it to break
I know I got the stress free package,
but the thing is we paid for this experience and the worst of it was it was leaking water on to the bed and you would understand my frustration having travelling with 3 children.
I would like to file a complaint about these issues -

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We're genuinely sorry to hear that your experience didn't meet your expectations, especially while travelling with your family. We understand how frustrating it must have been to encounter these issues during your trip.
The concerns you've raised regarding the roof leak, wipers, window, boot handle and roof vent have been shared with our maintenance team for investigation and inspection.
That said, we were disappointed to learn about these issues only after your rental had ended. At no stage during your trip did we receive any contact through our Customer Care or 24/7 Roadside Assistance service. Had we been made aware of these problems while you were travelling, we would have done everything possible to assist, arrange repairs where appropriate, or provide a suitable solution to minimise the impact on your holiday.
It's a shame that you complaint does not reflect the refunds you have received. We provided a $55 refund (one day's hire charge) as well as waived $75 fuel fee after the vehicle was returned with an empty fuel tank as a gesture of goodwill.
It's also worth noting that the vehicle was returned outside our normal office hours, and although this falls outside our standard return process, we did not apply any additional after-hours fees.
We genuinely appreciate your feedback, as it helps us continue improving both our vehicles and our service. We wish you and your family all the best and thank you again for taking the time to let us know about your experience.

Wouldn’t recommend it!
Unfortunately, our campervan broke down on the second night of our trip and the way it was handled was even more disappointing than the breakdown itself. The issue cost us four days of our holiday, spoiled food in the fridge, forced us into unplanned accommodation, and sent us between multiple service centres while the company resisted a proper fix. We received a partial refund, but not for the insurance on the unusable days, which made little sense to us.
To top it off, we were charged for returning the vehicle a few minutes after the Auckland depot closed despite all the delays caused by the vehicle failure.
Mechanical issues can happen. What matters is how they're handled. Unfortunately, this experience left us feeling that customer convenience and safety were not the priority. Book with caution.

Firstly, we would like to sincerely apologise again for the vehicle breakdown and the disruption it caused to your holiday. We understand that mechanical issues can be frustrating and disappointing, particularly when travelling.
That said, we believe it is important that public reviews present a complete and factual account of events.
When the breakdown occurred, we worked to assist you as quickly as possible and offered a replacement vehicle so that you could continue your travels. This option was declined. We also provided a refund of nearly $450 to help cover accommodation, food expenses, and a visit to the hot pools while the matter was being resolved.
Regarding your comments about the vehicle return, you contacted us during your trip requesting a later return time. We agreed to extend your return until 4:00 pm at no additional charge. When the vehicle had not been returned by 4:00 pm, we contacted you again at approximately 4:30 pm, at which point you advised that you were unsure of your location. As a result, the vehicle was returned significantly later than the agreed extended return time.
While we fully accept responsibility for the breakdown itself and sincerely regret the inconvenience caused, we do not agree with the suggestion that customer convenience or safety was not a priority. Throughout the situation, our team remained in contact, arranged assistance, offered a replacement vehicle, approved a complimentary late return, and provided financial compensation to help minimise the impact on your trip.
We respect your right to share your experience, however we also believe reviews should reflect all relevant facts and the support provided, allowing future travellers to form a balanced view of what occurred.

Helpfull employees but dirty vans
The various people I met at both branches (Christchurch & Auckland) were nice and helpfull except the guy that I returned the van to who barely spoke any word and completely ignored my questions and reported issues.
Shania was also extremely helpful to deal with our need for a change in our reservation because of a cancelled ferry.
Concerning the negative points :
Bad communication between branches. Everything was supposed to be arranged to transfer the reservation but the Auckland branch reacted as if they had not been warned at all... They needed to get and email answer to get the information, which took quite some time.
The vans are somewhat cheap but that does not excuse giving us non functionning equipement. The second van had a waste water pipe which was completely shattered with at least 5 big holes, making it totally unusable. The Auckland van was given to us with barely enough gaz to last 2 days while you are supposed to give it back fully topped up...
One of the two van had no pipe adaptator to connect to fresh water pipes. The other had no way to know the water level and no way to heat it. It's strange to have such differences between vehicule that are supposed to be within the same price range.
Both van were not clean when given to us with stains (suspicious white ones), a lot of hair and surface that were not clean as well.

We understand how frustrating it must have been to arrive and feel that the necessary arrangements had not been properly communicated. We would like to advise that this was an extremely stressful time with hundreds of customers being stranded due to ferry issues and lots of rebookings...
We're also very sorry about the maintenance issues you encountered with the campervans. A damaged waste water pipe, missing accessories, low gas levels, and inconsistencies between vehicles are not the standard we aim to provide. Your comments have been shared with our operations and maintenance teams so we can review these issues and improve our pre-departure checks.
We would also like to apologise for the cleanliness of the vehicles. Finding hair, stains, and unclean surfaces upon collection is unacceptable, and we understand the poor impression this creates at the start of a holiday. We are reviewing our cleaning procedures with the team to ensure better consistency moving forward.
Finally, we're sorry to hear that your concerns at drop-off were not addressed in the way they should have been. We always want our customers to feel listened to, and we appreciate you bringing this to our attention.

Faible prix & fait le travail
La prise de possession de la van était simple et rapide, le coût est très faible. De même que pour le « drop off » : ça été simple et rapide.
La van était toutefois très vieille et avait de la difficulté à monter les côtes. Il y avait aussi quelques éléments « shaky » dans la van qui rendait l'utilisation de celle ci moins agréable.
De plus, pour le drop-off, il faut remplir la tank à propane, mais il est très difficile de trouver des endroits où remplir ces tanks, comme elles sont petites.

We hired 2 camper vans
We hired 2 camper vans. One for the North island and one for the south. Unfortunately our first camper van had many issues for example the heating didn’t work, the van leaked a lot disrupting my sleep and as the designated driver that wasn’t ideal and the fridge was damaged. The campervan for the south island was better although we had issues with the water. We requested some sort of refund due to the disruptions however we got very little compensation.

Overall it was excellant the van went well I had no problems. I do think the explainations and going over of the van on pick up could have been better. More information about how the batterys/gas/ electrics worked together. I was never quite sure. the staff are very friendly shuttle servicegood. the $50 add on for parking (fines) is a bit steep as you only have to send on the notice. I would use them again.

There was a mechanical issue with the van that I rented engine issues. I informed them I was down in Gisborne and they immediately. send a replacement van to me.so I can continue on with my holiday very plea.
