We rented a Lucky Rodeo Campervan for our stay in the South Island, we picked it up in Christchurch.
The water system in the back of the van that was supposed to filter through the sink, spilled over and went all through the drawer underneath were we had our food and into the back seats of the van, were the bed was built.
We mentioned this problems to the staff when we returned, in quite a nice manner, expecting at least some interest from their side, and they completely ignored us, the problem, showed no interest whatsoever or even hinded any compensation, for something that had to be functional and caused problems to our stuff.
Additionally when we rented the van, no information was given to us whatsoever about where to camp, or what the regulations in the country where, something that out of care or given the regulations have changed not even 6 months ago, would be nice to mention to people coming from abroad. The sticker system that regulates whether you can freely camp in a self contained vehicle was omitted, and we rented a van that had no sticker, just because we weren't aware of the need for the sticker . Had this been mentioned by the staff we woul've gotten one with the sticker, which would actually even been more beneficious for the company as it's more money, but the complete desinterest and laziness of the staff in this case was detrimental for them, and also for us as costumers, as we got fined because we had not been given any information (and besides of our own responsibility) this could've been easily avoided. I mean, you rent a van to camp in it...when we returned it , and we commented the issue they told us "yes as your van had no sticker you weren't supposed to just camp in it all over the camper parkings".... its like renting a tent and not pretending to use it as a tent... anyways , we are very dissatisfied with specially the stuff and customer service and won't be renting with lucky rentals at all again.
In an additional note, although I feel this is the least important thing, the camper had a quite bad smoking smell for the first couple of days, we were so excited and happy that we got along with it, but when the other things started to come up, it was like "okay what else now", and it all started to add up

Easy check in and check out, efficient to get us back and forth from the airport.

We rented a van and did 7020km in 32 days around NZ. We named our van "Vanity". She did the 7K km without any hiccups. The sleeping arrangements was great and surprisingly comfortable. We couldn't get space on the Cook straight ferry and with one phone call to Lucky, a return trip was arrange.
Absolutely loved the service and would highly recommend to anyone needing a camper. Cheap, affordable and value for money service.

Pick up and return of the car was very good.Personal in Auckland was super helpful and friendly. We had a Toyota Estima for 25 days. Don't expect a brand new car ! We returned the car in Christchurch. Staff was also friendly but quite busy, however airport shuttle worked well.
The car was good, except that it rained through the trunk door. We got some compensation for that.
Overall, it was a positive experience. It was a good value for the money we paid.

My wife and I (both from the UK and over 60) hired a very basic Toyota Hiace campervan for a month in New Zealand.
We collected from Christchurch and dropped back to Auckland and there were no extra fees in this direction.
Actually our flight via Sydney was going to be just too late for the 16:00 cut off for collections, so they allowed my 25 year old son to collect it on our behalf and there were no extra fees to put him on the insurance. So it was there waiting for us in Christchurch Airport. PERFECT.
It's an older style van with a permanent high top, it had a few dents in the back door, stone chip in the windscreen and many minor scratches and little flaws, but it was just right for our trip around the south island and across the north island (where we'd been before!).
GREAT VALUE FOR MONEY. It drove well, just like a car, we drove it fairly slowly and averaged 25.7 MPG (Imperial gallons are 4.5 litres). It's a large engine with a heavy conversion of mostly wood, and it's got the aerodynamics of a brick.
We covered 4,381 kilometres, 2722 miles and the only day we didn't drive it was when we took the ferry to Stewart Island for an overnight trip in a hotel. Out of 28 days hire, we didn't sleep in it for 7 nights, when we stayed with friends. It was always comfortable and dry. We never once used the onboard toilet, the high standard of public toilets in the NZ towns is a credit to the country, some we even called "Musical Toilets" as music came on when you closed the door.
Sometimes we used toilets in pubs/museums/ visitor centres and the worst toilets were the drop toilets in the DOC (Dept of Conservation) Parks which we used a few times, notably near Te Anau/Milford Sounds. Otherwise we used the FREEDOM CAMPS all over NZ and had a great experience and time.
The van had plenty of room for cooking, 2 gas rings, a good fridge (that we mostly turned off overnight, to stop it humming) and we entertained my son and his girlfriend most evenings playing cards around the table. Plenty of headroom and space. A bit difficult to close the overhead back door as our van was missing an inside handle!
Curtains were excellent, kept the van dark. Bed was large and comfy for two. A bit of a "palaver" making the bed with table top and board every night, would have been easier with a fitted sheet. We hired bed clothes at $25 a hire (?) and these we washed 2 or 3 times during the hire.
We did fill up the gas bottle before returning the van and were surprised how little we used, less than half in a month. We probably ate out too often!
We thought we'd hired direct with the company, but actually found out at the last minute we had gone through an agent. Which meant messages took a little longer to be answered before the hire, but no worries at all.
As long as you are not expecting the perfect campervan, THIS IS IDEAL. It drove so well, we had no problems parking, just remember it is tall with a permanent high top, so you can't get under some barriers at car parks or inside multi storey carparks!
We sometimes got to a freedom camp, a little late, but due to it's tiny width, managed to find a space where others couldn't and had to drive on.
Yes, I'd definately use this company again. AND, since we've returned to the UK (via Cambodia and Vietnam) we've gone out and bought a campervan for trips around Europe.

Par où commencer ? Il y a tellement à dire. J’ai loué un van lucky rover pour une durée de 1 mois. Si la nouvelle Zélande est, comme le nôtre, le voyage d’une vie, oubliez tout bonnement et simplement cette agence de location. Récupérer le van nous a demandé + de 1h30 d’attente pour 3 pauvre minute d’explication du fonctionnement général. Les vans n’ont pas moins de 500000km au compteur, il s’agit en fait des anciens van de la compagnie jucy qu’ils ont rachetés pour les remettre en location. Autant vous dire que votre road trip en nouvelle Zélande va vite se transformer en visite de chaque garage que vous pourrez trouver sur la route. Car oui, une fois partie, si vous rencontrez des problèmes leurs solutions sera de vous les faire réparer … sur notre van nous avons eu un nombres de problèmes à rallonge : 1 seul gaz fonctionnel sur les 2 qui n’a jamais su être réparé, le réfrigérateur qui n’a même pas l’autonomie suffisante pour rester 1 nuit sans être branché, le lit coulissant cassé, le rétroviseur extérieur qui ne tenait plus, les vitres du van qui ne se verrouillaient pas, aucune puissance moteur qui nous limité à 20km/h en monté etc etc. Tout cela peut vous paraître anodin mais finis par vous gâcher le voyage et vous empêche même de suivre votre programme quand celui ci doit être perturbé par les visites au garage. Après avoir fait réclamation en relatant la liste infinie des problèmes que nous avons rencontré et du temps perdu durant notre trajet, il nous on proposé un remboursement de 300$ sur une location à plus de 5000$, une honte. A savoir également que tout sera bon pour se faire de l’argent sur votre dos comme vous louez une douche solaire percées 25$ qu’ils ont payés 12$, même combat pour les chaises extérieurs qui ont cassés dès la 1ere utilisation. Ne parlons même pas des frais exorbitants qu’ils prélèveront s’ils ont à traiter des infractions. Soyez certain qu’ils sont probablement l’une des sociétés de location de van les moins chères disponibles mais qu’à la fin de votre voyage il vous en coûtera bien plus chère au vu de tout ce qu’il vous font perdre. Ce sont tout bonnement des marchands de tapis qui n’ont aucun scrupule à se faire de l’argent sur votre dos en vous louant des tas de ferrailles en ruine.

This vehicle was in the price range that we needed and survived our whole trip, but there were glass shards that kept appearing from underneath the stove and sink areas, no shade on the back window, and the brakes did not seem to be in good condition. As well, the car seat that we rented was in quite rough condition, the straps did not adjust well, nor was there enough head and neck support. I would definitely bring your own car seat rather than renting.

Van is very old, revs really high so it was hard getting up the hills and mountains of the South Island. Absolutely terrible on petrol!! Had to stop and fill up after 2-3 hrs driving! By the time we spent money on fuel, we could have put more money into a better camper van. Found it very confronting having to buy essentials that should come with the van like $30 toilet sachets and dishwashing liquid, dish brush etc. had to stop and buy more pillows as the supplied pillows from Kmart were old and paper thin!! Left it all in the van for the next people as we couldn’t take it back with us. Hopefully it was kept in there.
I understand you get what you pay for but little things like providing the essentials would have made our experience better.

I booked the Lucky Rodeo. It was very true to the advertising and photos on the website. Pick up and drop off were very easy and quick. The shuttle to and from the airport was great. I had a water leak inside the van that was unable to be repaired while I had the van. The staff were very helpful and refunded a days rental for the trouble of having to take it to the mechanic. The pillows were very flat so I'd recommend bringing or buying one. Overall it was a good experience and the price was very affordable. I liked that there was only a logo on the number plate, it was very discreet and didn't scream campervan.

We had numerous mechanical and equipment issues with the vehicle, which put us in danger due to a lack of proper inspection. However, they were very responsive. After several messages back and forth, they only refunded us for 2 days. The amount we paid for the rental does not match the value of the vehicle. We are disappointed. Next time, we will turn to another company.

The customer service was excellent. Van got us everywhere we needed to go. It said it slept 3 but we found it crowded with 2! Cooking was pretty cramped and we replaced the fry pan as it was way past it's useby date. Bed could've been better designed, it sometimes collapsed when trying to go out the side door. We had a great time!

Everything was smooth and easy for the pick up. We loved our van, it was great value for money

The client experience was great at the pickoff and drop off. It may be just me, but before the renting of the van I did not see any advertising about the self-contain sticker and how much IT matered un New-zealand this information is very important for travelers in my opinion.

Respond to inquiries during day in a timely manner. Roadside assistance couldn’t help us til next day but we were on the road again quickly. Easy to work with. Van was good overall great experience

They were friendly, and for the most part it was great. We had plenty of really useful utensils, cookware, plates, cups, etc. in the kitchen. The fridge was useful, and they were really helpful on the phone. Our toilet was non-functional though (it had a crack in it, resulting in an unpleasant mess), and we only had one working burner on our stove. We also had some issues with the power cord connecting at a few sites. We had hired the additional portable charger thankfully, so that helped, but if we hadn't have done that, we would have struggled a few times with charging phones, fans etc. There wasn't anything in terms of apologies or compensation for these issues, which given they were parts of the main reasons we chose the van we did, was disappointing.
