Fake Marketing vs Brutal Reality

Meta Quest 3 for PCVR is probably the biggest example of fake tech hype and misleading influencer marketing I’ve ever experienced. The internet is flooded with paid reviews, affiliate-link YouTubers and heavily edited videos selling a fantasy version of VR that most real users will never actually experience.

Every video shows crystal clear graphics, flawless performance and some ‘future of gaming’ nonsense. What they don’t show is the actual image inside the headset: blurry compression, shimmering, ghosting, latency, pixelated distant objects and constant visual compromises that look nowhere near as good as a normal monitor. Most of those showcase videos are captured directly from the PC output, not from what your eyes actually see in the headset.

Nobody honestly shows the reality of PCVR:
hours wasted troubleshooting instead of gaming.

SteamVR breaks.
OpenXR conflicts.
Virtual Desktop works one day and randomly fails the next.
Steam Link detects controllers but not the headset.
Games require different runtimes.
Mods require launch order voodoo.
Updates break setups overnight.
One game needs one workaround, another game crashes because of that same workaround.

The entire ecosystem feels like a pile of unfinished software layers stitched together with community hacks and Reddit posts.

The worst part is how the VR community normalizes this disaster. Every time something doesn’t work, people instantly say:
‘buy a better router’
‘buy a better cable’
‘buy a better PC’
‘buy another app’
‘change codec’
‘tweak settings’
‘that’s normal’

So you get dragged into an endless money pit trying to fix an experience that still looks and performs worse than traditional gaming.

The harsh truth is that most influencers never show the REAL experience because they make money from affiliate links, sponsorships and hype. Nobody uploads a video saying:
‘I spent 3 hours trying to launch one game’
‘SteamVR stopped detecting my headset again’
‘my expensive setup runs like a slideshow’
‘I spend more time on forums than actually gaming’

But that is the reality for a huge number of PCVR users.

And the biggest joke of all?
The only VR games that consistently run smoothly are usually simplistic indie or mobile-level experiences. Beat Saber and similar games work because they look like lightweight tech demos. The moment you try serious AAA gaming, simulators or demanding PCVR titles, the entire illusion falls apart. Then you discover the real PCVR experience: stuttering, latency spikes, blurry visuals, runtime conflicts, endless tweaking and constant disappointment.

Meta Quest 3 for PCVR is not the revolutionary future of gaming that the internet sells you. It feels more like an unfinished tech experiment wrapped in aggressive marketing, fake expectations and influencer-driven hype designed to hide how frustrating and unstable the real experience actually is

I spent 2 hours trying to link my device with an official overpriced cable I bought for 80€ to my computer, Didnt work. I tried following guides online but nothing helped. Horrible headset, Just garbage. Whould give negative stars if I could!

We bought an expensive device that we cannot use due to repetitive Id checks requests failures and poor customer service. It gets resolved, then the issue reappears 48 hours later, and we have to go through the same dumb Id check process. We're no longer using the device because of this. It's been energy draining and time consuming. A total waste of my space too.

STAY WELL AWAY. EVERYTHING is broken. EVERYTHING is tedious. Even the Meta forum team have no idea how their product works. Then tell you to private message them so they can fix it (it's a FORUM, for QUESTIONS and ANSWERS to the QUESTIONS). Majority of forum posts don't have answers to them. If they did, they would be in customers' private messages, so what's the point of the forum?
They keep updating, reworking, but not fixing what is already broken. Whoever is in charge is completely out of touch with their community. They're so baffled by the lack of buzz around VR (it's because everything is broken, NOT because it isn't user friendly, or there isn't enough apps, or poor design). No wonder they were keen to delete Meta Worlds or whatever tf they were getting rid of. "Reset, factory reset, redownload, private message us, check Internet connection, try a different device" - its always someone else's fault. I'm so tired of it. Such a terrible company with the worst ever customer service and lack of knowledge about THEIR OWN products, I've ever seen in my lifetime.

I spent 4 hours the other day, after a factory reset, trying to figure out how tf I even use the pairing code on screen. Type it in where? Guess what? Location needed to be on. But that's not what it says on screen... so make it make sense that I'm stressing about typing in a code that Meta is explicitly telling me I need to type in somewhere?? The VR only requests that they can use your location data when setting up. Absolutely no mention of "turn your location on to find nearby devices"... just "type this code in". It literally bypassed the "code" by turning my location on... most tech these days are discoverable via being on the same WiFi connection. I'm not even joking when I say that the code is literally pointless. It's just "there" for literally no reason. Like someone forgot to take it out after a rehaul or something??

I literally can't play games in VR mode. and you would think they would make it somewhat straightforward, But it's such a ballache. I don't even know where to begin with trying to play games in VR... it's just broken. Some people are saying that the third party Virtual Desktop app works perfectly, especially compared to the built in Remote Desktop and Link apps. But when I've purchased things on Meta, it tells me that there are 0 refunds... so I have to risk paying £20 to see if that fixes my problems... but there's not clear way to tell what EXACTLY I am having issues with... loading games, even in VR mode, just loads them in the regular, default desktop mode.

In the built in Link app, you have this FAT bar at the bottom of your screen you can't get rid of and it really messes with the whole "immersion" side of things. You can't change the size of windows and when you do, it will just randomly disappear and appear, just to the left of your face, but it's HUGE and hard to reach and maneuver back to its starting point, without it repeatedly slingshotting back toward your face and remaining huge.

After the most recent update, my Meta Quest 3 is confusing af and it wouldn't close any open windows. I just assumed it was a new feature that the Horizon Worlds app was just stuck open and is the new " home page". But then I restarted and I could close windows again. But my point is that I literally don't know any better between something being a feature and just being straight up broken now. Everything is so anti user friendly and clunky af. I think the company needs to stop whatever they're in the process of doing and just fix their products. Get a new team in who are actually consumers of the products and redo everything, cos this actually has potential but I just don't know how it's gotten this far, how are the prices for these products justified, when it feels like a Temu product?

Bin neuer Besitzer einer Quest 3 seit ca. 3 Wochen. Anfangs das Menü bzw. die Bedienbarkeit war ok, ging eigentlich, dran gewöhnt, gestern gezockt und Spiel dann normal beendet wie sonst auch und zack ganz andere Menü-Ansicht,. Warum? Erstens total benutzerunfreundlich, zweitens total verschachtelte Menüführung und drittens, das Beste, man findet dazu nichts unter den Einstellungen oder überhaupt die Möglichkeit es zurückzusetzen oder ähnliches und ich habe keine Update Infos dazu gefunden bzw. das es überhaupt gestern ein Update gab. Naja super Herr Zuckerberg, warum einfach wenns auch komplizert geht, Glückwunsch, aber nicht wundern warum sich Meta bzw. VR nicht durchsetzt, wenn man selbst sowas nicht auf die Reihe bekommt.

Poor quality - unreliable product

This is the worst product experience ever. Had return Meta Quest 3 four times...the Headseat software is unreliable and breaks/restarts. When replacement Headset is sent it does not connect to controllers. Really poor quality!

Negative stars for customer support

I purchased Meta Quest gift cards and added them to my wallet. I bought several games and had to return due to them not being enjoyable. As a result Meta Quest restricted my account due to unusual activity. I contacted them and complied with every request they made of me. I provided them with the picture of my DL and provided the requested selfies. They said they would look into it. I have contacted help multiple times and get told the same response over and over. We looking into it, we understand your frustration, we will have this in fixed a few days after we complete our review. I was even told that they could not give me access to my wallet until their system completes an upgrade, which is totally ridiculous. There is no way it will take multiple days after receiving my verification information. They can add my money in seconds after receiving the gift card info but must take days to get my access to my wallet reset. They have no phone help and from what I can see they lack serious customer care or support. I have tried to resolve this with company to no avail, since I keep getting the same responses over and over. The only thing I want is for the company to restore access to my wallet since this is money I already purchased through gift cards and am being prevented from using by this company
I received an email today that they have verified me and I can use my wallet. LIE still have no access.

Customer service laughable

One Star because through our my year of playing meta quest 2 I enjoyed it and subscribed to the plus account as I loved playing new games. As a family entertaining device my boy played gorilla tag under my supervision as I had the app on my phone. Then meta quest sent me a email saying my account is locked unless I can prove my boy is over 13 years old. This I couldn't prove as he is only 9. But I couldn't get into my account or find out how to speak to anyone as this is also very difficult. Then after numerous emails they emailed me to say my account will close if I do t verify age. Again I thought ok as I couldn't do anything anyway.
Then meta quest took out £59.99 from my account for an account which they locked and was going to close.
After eventually speaking to different agents eventually one kindly closed my account and assured me I would receive a full refund (I have saved this chat page). However I have never received any money.

The worst company i have had the…

The worst company i have had the misfortune of dealing with. Bought a Meta Quest xbox version direct from meta. One of the controllers developed a fault 3 months ago. After a few emails, I was asked to send it back for a replacement. That was 3 months ago. Since then the return has been acknowledged and replacement promised within 5-7 days. That was over 2 months back. I have asked for an update once a week, so 8 emails later still no controller. I've lost hope in getting my controller or a replacement back. They keep sending canned email replies (each time from a different person) that they are still investigating and I will be updated soon. I never get a update and only a reply when i email again. Its obvious now that they are using Ai reply bots so never gonna get anywhere. They dont have any other form of contact. I strongly suggest staying away from purchasing direct from meta. Any problems, you are bang outta luck.

Renewing your Horizons+ is a real experience

The Meta application (computer, phone app and headset) says my Horizons+ had expired. I tried to renew it using the my computer, phone app and headset only for it to come back with the message "cannot renew since you have an active subscription". I contacted Meta via their chatbot website and the circle-jerk began. After two sessions of them asking for screen shots and recordings the chatbot could not solve my issue. Multiple times I asked to speak with a representative. They ignored the request 4 times and finally on the 5th time they said they only worked vie email, chatbot or What'sapp. No resolution. Their service model is terrible.

i was convinced by Meta quest to subscribe and that i would be able to unsubscribe just before the free month was up!
So i tried to unsubscribe for 2 months unsuccessfully until today but only after reading every single word and checking if i was in the right chapter and jumping through hoops did i eventually get the result i wanted 2 MONTHS ago

Don't recommend it at all

Don't recommend it at all. The Meta Quest 3 itself is great, until it works... I have reported a problem with my headset almost 2 month ago. 30 emails, 16 different support agents and still no solution provided. Terrible costumer service and no warranty.

This is really terrible

This is really terrible. Wish I didn't buy the meta at all. Basically I got a refurbished meta quest 3 which is a good device, but one of the controllers were broke and I was supposed to get a new or refurbished in up to 7 days. After discussing multiple times with the customer service 1 month of shipping after still no news about a controller and I told them I have to leave home in few days. It's just a disaster how they treat their customers is embarassing.

absolut noch nicht, massentauglich

ich habe die Metaquest 3S doch leider muss ich jetzt nach vier Monaten feststellen. Der Akku ist viel zu schwach und es laufen die ganze Zeit die Gläser die Linsen an. Sobald man sich nur bisschen bewegt laufen die Gläser an man muss die Brille alle 20 Sekunden runter nehmen und die Gläser abwischen mal abgesehen von dem Standard Kopf Band was echte Sch… ist. Ich verstehe nicht warum Meta so ein Teil zum Verkauf freigibt Leute das Ding ist zwar geil aber spart euch eure Kohle, das dauert noch 10,20 Jahre, bis die Dinger wirklich massentauglich sind. Es wird einem so krass schlecht, sobald man ein Spiel spielt mit Flieger oder künstlichen Horizont innerhalb von drei 10 Sekunden hast du ein Erlebnis von schlecht sein, das hast du in 1000 Leben vorher noch nicht erlebt. Wie gesagt, das Ding ist cool aber noch nicht ausgereift. Es ist zu Kopflastig. Der Akku ist so schlecht die Linsen laufen dauerhaft an. Man sieht eigentlich gar nichts und die so genannte VR Sickness es noch nicht behoben. Wie gesagt, das dauert noch zehn Jahre.
