Wouldn’t use again
Smooth pick up/drop off process, but unfortunately the company let themselves down by the shoddy quality of the van and its contents. We paid extra for a chair and table combo, only to find one of the chairs covered in mould. The pots/pans/equipment were old and all had to be scrubbed before we could use them - no mugs were also provided despite being in the inventory - so would recommend bringing your own crockery. Had issues with the electric, meaning we had no electricity for a chunk of our trip - we have received quite defensive and unapologetic comms from the company since returning.
Probably wouldn’t use them again.

We are are sorry that you had the issues with the chair and electric hook up cable. We have already refunded the cost of the chair for you, and with hindsight, we would have been better suggesting that you buy a new electric hook-up cable at the outset and reimbursing you for that.
The issue came to light late on a Friday afternoon, and as you know, we tried various ways to solve the problem by checking, connections, fuses and switches. With you in a remote location with a poor signal, and the weekend following, we lost a day or so on this. We know that you were smart and bought a new cable, and as we have said, we can reimburse you for this if you want to post it back to us. If you prefer to keep it, that's also fine of course.
We have learned a lesson that under the time circumstances we could have found a quicker solution rather than trying to fix it. On inspection of the cable on your return, the internal wires had come away from the connectors. This could have happened in use or on a previous hire.
We apologise for the inconvenience caused and are glad that the new cable enabled you to use all the facilities in your campervan. We try not to make mistakes, but like everybody, occasionally we get it wrong, and on this was oine of those occasions. We will learn from this experience.
We very much hope that we can change your mind and invite you to use us again - hopefuilly to show that we can give you our normal 5 star Spaceships experience! We would also like to offer you an additional 10% off any future hire as a further gesture of goodwill.

Alles in Ordnung bis auf ...
Wir hatten das Wohnmobil für 7 Tage in Schottland. Mit der Ausstattung und den Komfort waren wir sehr zufrieden. Das Wohnmobil ließ sich angenehm fahren. Der Kundenservice hat auf jeden Anfrage relativ schnell reagiert.
Eins müssen wir allerdings stark bemängeln.
Der Kühlschrank hatte verschiedene Funktionen. 1. Strom über Gas beziehen, 2. Strom über den Motor beziehen (während der Fahrt), 3. Strom über den Anschluss an eine Steckdose beziehen und 4. die Funktion "A", der Kühlschrank sucht automatisch die für den Moment beste Energiequelle.
Leider hatten wir lediglich nur Strom, wenn wir auf einem Campingplatz am Strom angeschlossen waren.
Weder über Gas noch über den laufenden Motor konnte sich der Kühlschrank Strom beziehen und sich somit kühl halten.
Uns sind so viele Lebensmittel dadurch verdorben. Wir mussten quasi deshalb täglich zu einem Supermarkt, um frisch einzukaufen, was uns teilweise wieder viel Geld gekostet hat, da wir oft von unserer geplanten Route abkamen.
Dazu hatten wir öfter den Kundenservice informiert und leider immer die selbe Antwort bekommen und einen Link über die Einstellung des Kühlschranks erhalten.
Ein Entgegenkommen erfolgte leider nicht.
Ebenso wäre es für die Camper angenehm, wenn man bei der Abgabestation eine Möglichkeit hätte gegen eine Gebühr die beiden Tanks zu leeren und den Wassertank zu füllen. Wenn man in Edinburgh und Umgebung ist, ist es sehr schwer einen Campingplatz zu finden, an dem man alles noch mal leeren bzw. füllen kann.
Ansonsten war es eine tolle Erfahrung und macht Lust auf mehr Urlaube in einem Wohnmobil.

Wir freuen uns, dass Ihnen Ihr Wohnmobil gefallen hat, bedauern jedoch, dass Sie Probleme mit der Bedienung des Kühlschranks hatten.
Um es klarzustellen: Der Kühlschrank im Wohnmobil kann entweder mit Strom oder Flüssiggas (Gas) betrieben werden. Sie können den Kühlschrank mit der Freizeitbatterie betreiben, diese kann jedoch entladen werden, wenn Sie nicht ans Stromnetz angeschlossen sind oder fahren.
Wenn Sie keinen Stromanschluss haben, funktioniert der Kühlschrank mit der Gasversorgung besser. Möglicherweise hatten Sie auch Probleme, wenn Ihnen das Flüssiggas ausgegangen war.
Grundsätzlich ist am Kühlschrank nichts auszusetzen und er funktioniert einwandfrei, aber manchmal muss man darauf achten, dass man ihn richtig bedient und die beste Stromversorgung gewählt hat. Sobald die richtige Stromversorgung ausgewählt wurde, dauert das erneute Abkühlen ebenfalls etwa 45 bis 60 Minuten.
Wir hoffen, dass Ihre Herausforderungen bei der Kühlschrankbedienung Ihre Reise nicht zu sehr getrübt haben.

Great experience with Spaceships Rentals ! We rented the Luxury Motorhome for a 10-day drive around Scotland and loved every minute ! The motorhome was confortable, well equipped, spacious. There was lots of storage space, the main double bed was very accessible and in a proper room, the toilet and separated shower were nice, the kitchen was nice to cook in, there was a nice-sized fridge & freezer. We would totally recommend Spaceships Rentals ! And we will definitely choose them again on our next trip to Scotland !

Decepcionante
Era nuestra primera aventura en caravana por Escocia y en consecuencia, nuestra primera experiencia con ellos, la cual calificaría como nefasta.
Enumero los puntos negativos:
-Justo en el momento de recoger la caravana, la cortina metálica que separa el aseo del resto del vehículo se descolgó. Nos acercamos de nuevo para comentárselo y nos dijeron que ellos nunca entregaban vehículos así, pero otro de sus compañeros nos dijo sinceramente que era un fallo de diseño y que sabían que eso ocurría, que no nos preocupásemos. Nos la arreglaron y acto seguido, tras cinco minutos, no más, vuelve a descolgarse, por lo que hemos estado 7 días sin poder hacer prácticamente uso del baño.
-El horno no funcionaba correctamente. Había que dejar pulsado el dedo insistentemente sobre el botón durante el tiempo de cocción. Si lo soltabas, el horno se apagaba.
-Los estores de las ventanas estaban rajados y sujetos con cinta aislante...una chapuza.
-En los laterales exteriores de la caravana se encuentran los depósitos (agua, gas...). Pues bien, la cubierta de los mismos no cerraban bien y se abrían durante los trayectos con el consiguiente riesgo de que se rompieran por la velocidad y te cargasen a ti el importe de su reparación.
-Ropa de cama sucia (fundas de almohada y de colchón), de no haber visto una lavadora en años.
-La gota que colmó el vaso fue que durante el trayecto nos saltó un fallo de motor. Antes de iniciar el trayecto, te proporcionan un número de teléfono de asistencia en carretera, al cual llamamos y todavía estamos esperando que nos contesten. Afortunadamente, el piloto se apagó solo tras unas horas, pero si hubiese pasado algo más grave, un accidente, choque, etc, nos hubiésemos visto desprovistos y desprotegidos en medio de una carretera sin ningún tipo de asistencia por su parte. Comentamos esto el día de la entrega de caravana (día donde se nos vuelve a encender dicho piloto 30 min antes la entrega) y la respuesta del chico que estaba trabajando en ese momento (muy desagradable y de muy malas formas) es que deberíamos haber llamado al teléfono de asistencia... cuando días antes nos pasó lo mismo y nadie nos atendió el telefono y mucho menos nos devolvieron la llamada.
La experiencia en caravana por Escocia es espectacular. Está llena de paisajes maravillosos y creo sinceramente que la mejor forma de recorrerlos, de visualizarlos y de vivir esa experiencia es en caravana, por lo que repetiríamos sin duda, pero NO con ellos.

Lamentamos que se haya sentido decepcionado con algunos aspectos de su viaje.
Adjuntamos un aviso cerca de la puerta de la ducha que recomienda a los clientes que la abran con cuidado para evitar que se salga del corredor. Es un gran diseño que ahorra espacio, pero hemos transmitido sus comentarios al respecto al fabricante de la autocaravana.
La cocina, las persianas y las cubiertas de los casilleros funcionaban bien a su regreso y, por supuesto, toda nuestra ropa de cama es limpiada y lavada profesionalmente por un contratista externo especializado.
Además, esta revisión es la primera que hemos escuchado sobre cualquiera de estos temas. Si se hubiera comunicado con nuestro equipo de atención al cliente, definitivamente habríamos podido ayudarlo con estos problemas.
Si no se comunica con nosotros y no sabemos que hay un problema, ¿cómo podemos ayudarlo?
Usted menciona una falla del motor, pero nuevamente no tenemos constancia de esto. Obviamente devolvió el vehículo a nuestra sucursal en Edimburgo, entonces, ¿cómo se resolvió esto?
Estamos encantados de que haya tenido un gran viaje por Escocia, pero quizás su reseña de 1 estrella sea un poco injusta.

Think twice before you hire from them
This is definitely the worst RV rental experience I have ever had. We rented two vehicles, one motorhome and one voyager campervan, from Spaceships Rentals from August 2nd to 10th to accommodate our eight-people family trip, including two seniors over 70 and a child of 9-years old. That voyager campervan turned out already having low puncture and Adblue system issue.
For the low puncture, the screw was worn out and had been in the tire for some time before we picked it up. The tire issue started showing on dashboard on Aug 2rd evening, the very first day of our pick-up. We contacted Spaceships Rentals about it on Aug 3rd and were told it could be just sensor issue and suggested wait and check, which actually was not unreasonable guess. Then the following day, on Aug 4th, the tire flattened, so we knew it was indeed low puncture. We had to cancel our cruise in Lake District for tire recovery. .
When the adblue system issue first showed up on Aug 4th Friday, Spaceship Rentals customer service gave three options about it. One is to drive the vehicle in a certain way for some time, which I was not able to hear clearly over the phone due to the noise from tire recovery right beside me. The second is driving to Edinburgh, but they also mentioned their phones and all offices would be closed over the weekend. There was no one we could reach out to arrange such fix or switch. The third option was to continue our trip over the weekend and they would send us detailed instruction on Monday Aug. 7th, which we followed. However, by the following Monday when we got detailed instructions through email, which required us driving the van for 45 mins at 3500rmp on a motorway, there was no motorway available in our location, as we were in Kyle of Scottish Highland. Then, Spaceship Rentals customer services blamed us on choosing the third, though all three options were provide by them and they were very well aware of our selection over the phone call on Aug 4th.
Then, Spaceships Rentals repeatedly requested us to drive that broken voyager campervan 5-6 hours nonstop to their Edinburgh office. This is very irresponsible and completely ignored our safety. Tiredness can kill! Customers have every right to refuse.
Later, Spaceships Rentals gave suggestions to the local garages in Kyle. However, they did not give authorizations to those garages, so we were constantly turned away by the garages. This wasted us a whole day on Aug 7th. We could do nothing but move to our prepaid campsite in Portree.
Then on Aug 8th, we were forced to leave our seniors, child and that motorhome in Portree and drive back that broken voyager campervan van to those garages in Kyle to fix the Adblue system issue after they were given authorization. All professional mechanics later confirmed the issue is in the system and they can do nothing except getting it towed away to Ford services. Even professional mechanics cannot fix the issue, Spaceships Rentals in later emails still blamed us customers for not fixing it by their so-called 3500rpm suggestion. And they tried very hard to blame our driving for the issue, though the mechanics have confirmed no user damage to the Adblue system. This really pissed me off! Spaceships Rentals customer service simply ignores the assessment from mechanics and made different excuses trying to blame us for these already existing issue in their van.
Finally on Aug 9th, we had to wait another whole day for the towing lorry to pick up that voyager campervan. As we were told we need to hand in the key by ourselves.
When we finally got to Edinburgh office on Aug 10th, we saw a couple who just returned an exact same voyager campervan complained to the staff about the same Adblue system issue. They were lucky enough it later was gone. But this means the issue is not uncommon at all among Spaceships voyager campervans. Think twice before you make the booking!
During the whole process, we were forced to leave the other motorhome behind and were not able to drive it for vacation at all. And we were kicked back and forth among Spaceships Rentals, Roadside Assistance (RAC), recovery team and local garages. The information we got from them conflicted many times.
In total, our valuable eight-people family trip was ruined by Spaceships Rentals by at least four days. Besides the portion of car rental services we were not able to use and related out-of-pocket expenses, the time and effort we spent on this big travel plan preparation, visa application, my families’ twelve hour flight from the other side of the world and our emotional loss. And this was completely caused by the poor vehicle maintenance and customer service from Spaceships Rentals.
I have filed a formal complaint letter to Spaceships Rentals and I am now preparing letter to local MP and files for small claims court.

Hi Wenjun, thank you for taking the time to leave your review. We are obviously aware that there were some aspects of your trip that you were unhappy with, and as you know, we did everything we could to help you with those matters.
We would also point out the following:
You were unaware that the Voyager campervan was manual, and contacted us to see if you could swap the vehicle for an automatic on the morning of your collection. It was early August in peak season, and we had no alternative vehicle. You added an additional driver to the booking who had some experience of a manual.
Unfortunately this contributed to the AdBlue issue that arose on the third day of your trip. We advise that the vehicle should not be left idling as this may cause sensor problems and result in the exhaust system becoming clogged with Diesel Particulate Filters. Unfortunately, this is what happened causing the AdBlue issues to develop.
The tyres were checked and fine on collection. You drove over a nail or screw which became embedded in the tyre causing the slow puncture. You could have simply changed the tyre for the spare, but you decided to call Roadside Assistance to do this.
We offered you the best advice on how to drive the vehicle and clear the DPF block. We called your nephew who was the new manual driver. We emailed suggesting you call into our Edinburgh branch for us to check this, but to let us know so we could arrange for a team member to help you. When you smashed the mirror off the vehicle, we suggested garages you might call at for a temporary repair.
After the weekend, when the AdBlue problem had worsened and you hadn't followed our suggestions, we arranged for a third party garage to take a look at the problem. He was unable to fix it so we arranged for recovery back to our Edinburgh branch for you and the vehicle.
Please bear in mind that this took place in the middle of August, peak season and you were in a remote location on Skye. The RAC do an incredible job attending breakdowns at road side, but you have to understand that in the middle of their busiest time they may not be able to get to the Kyle of Lochalsh as quickly as they would at other times of the year.
To reduce the wait for recovery, we suggested that it may be quicker and more convenient for you to drive the vehicle back to the branch, but to leave the engine idling when you took breaks. This was perfectly safe and was designed to get you back more quickly. You declined this advice too, as your manual driver had already returned on the train. We then arranged onward transport for the rest of your party.
Unfortunately, despite numerous phone calls and over 40 emails, you did not take our advice on board, the second vehicle you hired was perfect, you were unfortunate to have a slow puncture and you contributed to the AdBlue problem with your driving patterns and by being unable to clear the filter as we suggested.
Despite all that, as a gesture of goodwill, we still refunded the last 3 days rental of your campervan hire.
We are sorry that your trip did not end as you hoped, but we did everything we possibly could to help you.

Disappointing Quality
The motor home was quite old and a number of cupboards and drawers broken. The engine had major problems resulting in the RAC being called on two occasions. It was dangerous to drive and especially with 3 children. We were left for two days just waiting for the RAC which lost two days of the Holiday. The team when called did their best to assist but left at the mercy of the RAC. I wouldn’t rent again.

We are sorry that you were disappointed with your experience. The motorhome is an 18 plate vehicle so not that old. Sometimes, it can be difficult to have the time to repair any minor cosmetic or surface damage between hires, especially during the busy school holiday summer season. We hope that cosmetic damage to the drawers and cupboards didn't spoil your enjoyment of your trip.
The engine did not have major problems. You got an engine management light on the dashboard and the vehicle temporarily went into Limp mode, restricting its speed to 40mph. As we explained, this is probably caused by leaving the engine idling for too long.
Unfortunately, we cannot be responsible for 3rd party roadside support, and the RAC do a fantastic job despite being really stretched over the summer months. They came out next day after the problem was reported and got you back on the road again. Under the circumstances of it being non-urgent, they responded promptly. It was not a breakdown on the side of the road, as you were in a car park overlooking Perranporth beach.
Maybe under the full circumstances 2 stars is a little harsh, but thanks for the opportunity of explaining the circumstances of the RAC call out.

Such an easy experience!!
We booked well in advance and it couldn’t have been easier. We could choose exactly what we needed in the van for our trip to camp at Silverstone over the British Grand Prix. Any emails and telephone calls were answered and arrangements made without a fuss. Collection and drop off took minutes and we were on our way. The van was clean and well equipped, a great experience all round. We highly recommend and definitely use them again. Thank you and well done.

Spaceships communicated so promptly! They answered all our questions and worked with us to get the perfect dates for our trip! Our little VW Caddy was fuel efficient yet roomy and comfortable enough for the two of us! It was great in the mountains and on narrow streets! We highly recommend them and can’t wait for our next adventure with them!

We would like to point out that on your hire you caused serious damage to the underside of the motorhome and engine on an unmade road in Serbia, then abandoned the vehicle, neglected to use our roadside assistance and have been abusive throughout. Also this is now the third name you have used in correspondence with us.
We will be requesting that this review is withdrawn on that basis.

Spaceships is the best Motorhome rental…
Spaceships is the best Motorhome rental company I have come across. They have really well appointed vans, which are well kept. Staff are helpful and great to deal with when you get in touch with them. One of the key benefits of Spaceships is that they allow you to arrange a pick up and drop off time which suits you (rather than the pick up after 3pm and drop off by 11am nonsence that competitors have).
I had a great trip and will be renting with Spaceships again in the future.

Never again!
I hired a camper for 30 days to go to Austria in.
I phoned Spaceships the next morning after collecting it to report that the handbrake was not functioning properly and would not hold the vehicle on a steep gradient, and later that day as I was on my way past Strasbourg the rear brakes seized up completely.
I then had to make a 10 hour train journey to get to my destination.
Spaceships refused to accept responsibility for providing me with a faulty vehicle.
It transpires that the rear discs as well as the pads had to be replaced, yet they claim that the vehicle had been thoroughly checked beforehand.
I was offered a refund for 17 days of the 30 days I had paid for, although I only had use of the vehicle for 28 hours.
In the end I did not get any refund because I had to pay for the vehicle to be repatriated from France back to the UK - the cost of which wiped out any recompense I might otherwise have received.
*Spaceships has responded to this review (which I tried to keep as short as possible without going into details or any personal commentary).
Firstly, they are still claiming that the vehicle was not faulty. And I still claim that it was faulty when I got it - the handbrake was already ineffective when I arrived at the Channel Tunnel when the handbrake would not hold the vehicle on the ramp. Or did the handbrake develop a fault in the 100 miles of mostly motorway driving between London and Folkestone?
As for their claim that their roadside recovery covered the cost of my train journey, well I got no support from anybody to make the train journey to Austria (I had to find my own way from where I was to the nearest big town which happened to be Strasbourg), and to date I still have not received a penny from the roadside assistance company as reimbursement for the costs of reaching my destination by train, nor for any of the travel costs I incurred in order to get back to the UK.
Yes, I did discuss with Spaceships the possibility of me returning to Strasbourg to collect the vehicle after it had been repaired and continue with what remained of my 'holiday'. I did say at the time in phone conversations with Spaceships that it was 'possible' and 'feasible' that I might make the long journey back from Villach to Strasbourg - a 10 hour train journey arriving late in the day and having to find somewhere to stay overnight, and then a further long journey by taxi from Strasbourg to pick up the vehicle from the repairers (according to Spaceship's reckoning the taxi fare there was £86.90).
And on further consideration of the long and arduous journey involved I decided it was unreasonable to expect me to do it for the sake of another ten days of a 'holiday' that had already been ruined. Obviously I must have aroused the impression with Spaceships that I was fool enough to undertake such a journey.
So the repairs to the vehicle were expensive - am I to be blamed for that as well? If the brakes had been fit for their purpose in the first place none of this would have happened.
Spaceships want to give the impression that they treated me fairly. I paid £1572 for hiring the vehicle from them, plus £260 for the Channel Tunnel crossing (optimistically I had paid for a return crossing), in exchange for 28 hours use of the vehicle - at the end of which I was left stranded (nobody gave me any assistance to continue my journey) and having to find a taxi before I could make my way onward to Austria where I was due to attend a funeral two days later.
Yes, I did make a complaint to the BVRLA about this - and please take a look at the Trustpilot reviews of this so-called 'independent body' where you will read that the BVRLA usually finds in favour of the rental companies - who are paying their wages in the first place! (As arbitrators I consider them to be totally laughable.)
I stand by what I wrote in my original article. It was a concise statement of the bald facts without any accompanying commentary about how angry I feel about my journey to Europe being ruined by other people's negligence.
I might just as well have gone by train in the first place and saved myself all this bother!

However, as you are well aware, there are some details missing here. The rear brakes unfortunately seized up during your trip. This is a mechanical fault that can happen at any time. Both the handbrake and brakes are part of our multi-point check on each vehicle, and we did not provide you with a faulty vehicle. Unfortunately, sometimes technical faults develop during a journey.
We kept in touch with you, our roadside support covered the cost of your train journey and we explained the two options open to you. We could repair the vehicle in France for you to collect and continue your trip, or we could recover the vehicle and repair at our branch in the UK. You opted to take the first option and said you could collect the vehicle week commencing October 31st from the garage in Strasbourg. We then authorised the repair to be carried out and offered you a full rental refund for the days the vehicle was off the road.
Unfortunately, 4 days later you contacted us to say you had changed your mind and were flying back to the UK. We tried to stop the repair work (which was in excess of £1000) but it had already begun and parts had been ordered. So now we had the expensive repair bill and we also had to recover the vehicle back to the UK.
We still offered you the refund for the days the vehicle was unavailable, but charged recovery costs as you had changed the arrangement. As it was, the recovery cost was greater than the refund, but we did not charge the extra, nor did we charge for the return of your belongings.
It is also worth pointing out that you made a complaint about this matter to the British Vehicle Rental & Licencing Association (BVRLA), an independent body who offer dispute arbitration, and they found in Spaceships favour.
This was not the outcome that any of us wanted, but was unfortunately caused by your change of mind.

*UPDATE FOLLOWING CUSTOMER UPDATE
There is no ambiguity here. The handbrake is part of our multi point check and was tested to 4-6 clicks prior to collection. The fault developed as a result of the rear brakes seizing up which can happen at any time. The vehicle was not faulty on collection.
This problem was caused by the customer agreeing to return, pick up the vehicle and continue the trip, before returning to our London branch at the end of the rental. On that basis we authorised the vehicle repair in France. 4 days later the customer changed his mind and decided to fly back to the UK.
We are one of the few motorhome rental companies who offer 24/7 Roadside Assistance in the UK and Europe. There is a process to follow with regard to the expenses claim. This service and refund is provided by our third party partner.
Finally, the BVRLA runs a Trading Standards approved Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) service. It is a completely independent arbitration service.
3 stars thanks to the price
No hidden cost but seems like it. You have to empty everything before returning but there is nothing close to London to do it. No even in the drop off area. The radio wasn’t working. Several thing broken like the seal for the toilet that filled the living space with the s**t smell while driving. I did clean the toilet and was supposed to be charged £200 but £60 as a gesture at the end. It’s still real expensive for the task.

We are confused though. We send all customers (including you) return email asking you to make sure the inside of the motorhome is tidy, you have your belongings with a video showing you how to empty and clean the toilet cassette. We impose a £200 cassette cleaning charge as a deterrent not to return the cassette full of human waste - which you did.
You told us you hadn't cleaned it because you didn't know you had to, even though it is on your signed rental agreement and in the return email. As a goodwill gesture we reduced the charge to £60 for one of our team to deal with your toilet waste. If you think that is unfair or expensive, we're sorry - all you had to do was do it yourself.
There is actually a camp site on the same site as our London branch at Apps Court.
Also, you never mentioned anything broken or any smell (which was most probably caused by not emptying and cleaning the toilet cassette). If you don't tell us, unfortunately we cannot help you to find a solution to resolve the issue.
We send emails to help and support you on your trip. If you don't read them, you're not going to get all the support and information you need.
