Gibraltar International Bank
Gibraltar International Bank: where professionalism goes to die, and customer service is just a suggestion. If you’re looking for bad exchange rates, sky-high commissions, and the kind of technical support that could only be described as performance art, this is the place for you.
The fun began when I updated my account with a Latvian phone number, ditching my Gibraltar number after tiring of Gibtelecom’s equally stellar service. This single change brought their entire system to its knees. Suddenly, I was locked out of internet banking, and OTPs (One-Time Passwords) for card transactions decided to disappear into the void.
Getting back into internet banking was an epic saga. It took a month of emails with their support team, who seemed to believe ignoring my questions was a perfectly acceptable solution. I asked repeatedly about using WhatsApp for OTPs—questions they pretended not to see until, surprise, they brought up the WhatsApp option themselves like it was some groundbreaking innovation.
After regaining access to internet banking, I discovered my card was still useless for online shopping. OTPs still didn’t show up, not even on WhatsApp. The bank’s genius solution? They told me to contact my phone carrier to resolve the issue. Because, obviously, troubleshooting their own SMS system isn’t part of their job description.
It gets better. After I had to ask twice, they begrudgingly gave me the sender number for their SMS messages, which my carrier needed to investigate. My carrier confirmed that no SMS messages were even reaching their network. But did this revelation prompt any action from the bank? Of course not. Their support team just kept sending copy-paste responses: “The messages are being sent. Please contact your carrier.” Over and over. And over. Apparently, basic troubleshooting is too much to expect from them.
Eventually, I got tired of the endless loop of incompetence and moved my money to a bank that knows what it’s doing. A month later, I checked back out of morbid curiosity. Their response? You guessed it: “The messages are being sent, and there’s nothing else we can do.” Stellar effort.
If you enjoy being gaslit by a bank, Gibraltar International Bank is perfect for you. Between them and their equally incompetent SMS partner, Gibtelecom, they’ve mastered the art of passing the buck and accomplishing absolutely nothing. Do yourself a favor and avoid this circus.
