Facilities often not upto scratch
Showers were down for weeks so unable to attend gym before work. So cancelled my subscription until repaired. When signed back up they increased price. Steam Room also recently out of order. Often gym machines out of order.

Good facility with good but limited equipment, some basics I’d expect missing from the gym. The biggest problem is that it is not air conditioned so on warm days it is very uncomfortable train. Opening hours on Fridays and weekends also not ideal.

Blocking account weekly due to system error
I am a member at Better gym and although the facilities are good my membership keeps getting frozen!
I scan into the building and ensure my name is ticked on any lists in classes.
The system does not work and my account is being frozen on a weekly basis which then means I have to email, ring and go into the building to get it unblocked. Last week it took 12hrs to get it unblocked after sending 2 emails and then eventually going into the gym and finding a member of staff.
I have asked to speak to somebody about this issue via emails and after a couple of emails I am being told to listen for the beeps when checking in, very condescending as the beeps work but the barriers don’t! Better need to fix a system that obviously doesn’t work instead of freezing accounts in error.

We would advise that if you are scanning up to ten minutes before the session begins and up to ten minutes after and you are still receiving incorrect fines, to speak with a member of the concierge team so they can investigate.

Not enough swimming slots available
No swimming slots available at workington.
Lanes to busy at peak times mainly with swimming clubs. Often only 1 lane available and up to 5 people with mixed ability sharing the lane. Not able to swim lengths without interuption.

Better - don’t bother, the admin are incompetent
We’ve been better members since 2013, joined via an offer via my employer. I signed up for a family membership & everything was great. My kids both reached 18 so came off the offer leaving me & my wife. We both attended the Workington sports centre weekly.
Over the last few years the admin team must have changed as they continually request proof of employment- which I’ve provided, however my wife was apparently emailed by better requesting proof of employment- an email she never received!
However better would not address the issue without response from the missing email - why was she was being asked for proof of employment when the account was in my name I have no idea - everything was in my name therefore what difference would her employment / employer make in this situation??
She had her access suspended - & was told so at the desk in front of people we had trained with for the last 10 years or so - this caused extreme embarrassment to my wife at the time.
We called customer services who promised a manager would call to sort out / discuss the issue within 48 hours - no call.
(A call could have addressed the whole issue)
Due to the constant hassle & ineptitude of better customer services we decided to cancel our membership
If only things had remained how they were we’d still be there

We understand how confusing and upsetting it must have been to have your wife’s access suspended without clear or consistent communication, especially after so many years of dedicated membership.
Your concern about why her employment status was relevant when the account was under your name is completely valid, and we sincerely regret that this wasn’t handled with more clarity and sensitivity. The situation you described at the front desk and the lack of follow-up from our customer service team are deeply concerning and not reflective of the experience we strive to offer.
We are currently reviewing our internal processes to ensure situations like this are managed more effectively in the future. Your feedback has been shared directly with the management team for further investigation.

WORKINGTON- BETTER -A terrible Company which…
WORKINGTON -Better a terrible Company which advocates so many social goals with an ideal of being a hub of the Community and then unilaterally changes the benefits of the membership removing racket sports to existing members that have been using the membership for the singular purpose of playing squash. The staff on reception are fantastic and we understand the decision was taken above local level with not so much as an email or letter to say the "conditions of membership & booking" are being altered. Changing the contract/membership or established booking entitlement was questionable at best. The group of "senior" gentlemen that play squash on a Tuesday night for an hour and a half for the last 4-5 years has now been decimated. Some can't afford the increase imposed others are leaving on principle. There is now no Senior Membership for someone wishing to use the facility solely for squash. The courts are seldom cleaned and often in a dirty condition and I have had to clean or tidy up the court before playing. There is very little ongoing cost to providing squash compared to gym, classes, swimming or badminton. The fact that the arrangement/agreement was self evident by the ability to book with the membership confirmed until recently squash was included with the Membership. Sharp practice not necessarily at local level but this narrow minded extortion has discredited the image of Better to many members. Shame on you. Jonathan

He is only 4, and got a little bit upset during the lesson, but they managed to get him over it, hopefully he continues to enjoy his lessons.

Don’t expect to get on classes
If you want a basic gym then this is good for that,, if you want to book classes be prepared to miss them for weeks on end.. you always have to join a wait list.. I pay 38 pound a month,, they are happy to take your money but will not employ enough staff to cover their more popular classes. It’s a good gym just very badly managed.. i couldn’t even get in the sauna all day the other day.. but that’s a rarity but it was the last straw I cancelled my membership because I cannot get on the classes for weeks at a time.. they send you emails telling you there is a space,, when you are in the wait list, and there is no space, I have literally been on my email when I receive their message about a space, and I click on no space it’s the most frustrating annoying procedure.. for somewhere that’s advocating for a better stress free life.. lol

When you are on a waiting list and a space comes up, all those on the list will be emailed and it is a case of fastest-finger-first when it comes to booking.
All members have the same chance to book, 7 days in advance from 10pm, whereas non-members can only book 5 days in advance.
