CodeMonkey - Coding for Kids Arvostelua 61

I signed up for a free CodeMonkey trial, expecting a fun and educational coding platform for my child, but I’ve been thoroughly disappointed by the company’s unethical subscription and refund practices.

The platform itself is good - however the written instructions were not clear/ simple enough for a child to follow independently, we needed YouTube walk throughs etc. to help us understand what to do. When we got it working, it was engaging and enjoyable.

However, this is overshadowed by their unfair and devious terms and conditions. It is unclear how long the free trial is for, and, they also make it very difficult to cancel. It feels designed to trap users rather than serve them.

Hidden in their terms and conditions is the clause “You are eligible for a refund if no more than 5 days passed since your last purchase and if no progress was done during this time period.” So although I cancelled my free subscription on time, my child logged in once after this, and so, CodeMonkey took money for a yearly subscription and said I was not eligible for a refund.

I reached out to them citing Australian consumer law, and managed after much escalating to secure a full refund. It’s clear the business puts revenue over user satisfaction. This was a disappointing experience, and I wouldn’t recommend CodeMonkey to anyone until they amend this clause and make the terms and length of the free trial more transparent.

CodeMonkey has consistently added value to our educational programs by helping students develop strong problem-solving and computational thinking skills—skills they seamlessly transfer into their everyday academics. At LISD, we’ve been actively using CodeMonkey in grades PK–8 for the past 7 years as part of our STEAM curriculum and Technology Clubs. The platform’s interactive features and real-time progress tracking have been especially appreciated by teachers, who can easily monitor student growth and simulate activities alongside them.

One of the highlights of our program is the annual campus-wide Code-A-Thon, where students compete in district-level challenges during our Tech Expo. These events have become highly anticipated, and the excitement continues to grow each year.

As I proudly mark the completion of my 10th successful year using CodeMonkey in my K-8 classrooms, I wanted to share why this platform has been such a cornerstone of my teaching. Right from Kindergarteners getting their first taste of logical thinking with CodeMonkey Jr. to my 8th graders diving into Python, the engagement factor is high! What's kept me loyal for a decade, beyond the student enthusiasm, is the phenomenal support for teachers. CodeMonkey isn't just a student platform; it's a teacher's toolkit. The dashboards are intuitive, making it easy to track individual student progress and identify who needs a little extra help or who's ready for a bigger challenge. The lesson plans, curriculum guides, and professional development resources have been a lifesaver. The platform offers clear progression, and the automatic feedback on challenges helps students learn from their mistakes in real-time. Finally I truly appreciate the platform's commitment to staying fresh. The new content that comes out monthly – whether it's new courses, seasonal activities, or updates to existing modules – means there's always something new to explore. Whether you're an experienced coding teacher or a novice willing to learn alongside your students, I highly recommend CodeMonkey!

As a middle school computer teacher for many years, I have included coding in my curriculum to provide opportunities for students to work on critical thinking and problem solving. I've used other platforms like Scratch and HTML from a textbook, but nothing has been easier or better than CodeMonkey for me. Once I started using CodeMonkey around six years ago, I've never looked back. Students love the gamified environment and as a teacher, the classroom management is super easy. They have several ways to set up classes. I provide a link with the embedded class code and students can begin the assigned course(s) immediately. They even provide quizzes so I can check for understanding of concepts before moving on to the next course. I usually assign block coding to sixth graders, coffee script (sort of like simplified java script) courses to seventh graders, and Python script courses to eighth graders. They also have CodeMonkey Jr. courses for younger students. I use these courses for my students with special needs so they can code too! I cannot recommend CodeMonkey enough for any computer teacher or elementary teacher who wants to include any kind of coding into their curriculum.

CodeMonkey has a terrible cancellation policy. Upon reading that payment was made the previous day for an auto renewed for another 1 year, I immediately tried to cancel my subscription and had my child stop using the program. CodeMonkey denied my request despite being well within the 5 days cancellation window. CodeMonkey shared that the cancellation policy included another consideration factor - no progress can be made during the 5 days window. Upon asking what and when progress was made (as there was no progress made), the company stopped responding and no refund provided. Poor cancellation policy and service!

I think Code Monkey is an amazing tool for young AND old learners. As a 31 year old, I was extremely entertained by the coding games and know that my students will be absolutely obsessed! If we are going to be using screens, we might as well make it educational.

Code Monkey is a great way for all 3 of my kids to get their foot in the door with coding! The game based play is fun and the gradual scaling-up with levels of difficulty sharpens their thinking and increases progress. Thanks Code Monkey for the trial - looking forward to the following year subscribed and working on our coding skills!

CodeMonkey is a great way to introduce kids to coding. The activities are engaging, and the platform makes learning feel like a game. It’s user-friendly and offers a solid foundation in programming basics. Definitely worth checking out if you’re looking for an educational tool that keeps kids interested.

As a middle school teacher who has been using CodeMonkey for years, I can't recommend it enough! It's an engaging, student-friendly platform that makes learning to code fun and accessible for all ability levels. My students are always excited to log in and work through the challenges, and I love how it reinforces critical thinking and problem-solving skills. CodeMonkey has been a game-changer in my classroom and continues to be one of my favorite teaching tools!

I am a parent of young kids with absolutely no experience in coding. I didn’t know what to expect. What I found was really fun for the kids and that’s what’s most important. I like how they give you a free trial so you can try it and see if you like it. I just wish that the program could work on iPhone as well. Not just the iPad or a computer.

We love Code Monkey! I don’t know how to code so it has been nice to learn along side my kids. Both of my children love the program and find it challenge yet fun! If you’re wanting to teach your kids to code, I’d definitely recommend this program.

CodeMonkey is easy to use with a variety of grade levels. Even primary-age students are easily able to navigate the basic block coding with a scaffolded approach. The spiral effect of the lessons allows students to build from each lesson so that they gain gradual understanding in a manner that matches their ability levels. I enjoy that you can assign courses or simply unlock them all and let the students work at their own pace.

Code Monkey is my go to platform for the middle school students in my programming fundamentals course. We've spent 5 months working through the three Coding Adventure Courses. I stop grading at Challenge 175 and am always pleasantly surprised when so many continue forward for the challenges AND to see what happens when the monkey finally catches the gorilla:)

CodeMonkey is a great platform to get students started with coding and build their skills over time. Starting in the pre-K and progressing through the program, students understand and apply coding concepts and learn about artificial intelligence, digital citizenship, and more. Students build confidence as they have support within the platform and it helps to boost engagement because of the great characters and animations that CodeMonkey offers. Students enjoy creating their own games, too.
My students really enjoyed using it in our 8th-grade STEAM class. They were able to select some of the different courses to take, which were block-based, text-based, or even Python coding. It is great that it provides lessons, a list of materials and resources needed and included, and all of the support for educators to get started right away.

Codemonkey is a great resource for ALL of our students in our Pk-5th elementary school. I have been a loyal and happy educator of Codemonkey since 2014. Our students love the challenges in all codemonkey courses which assist them to improve their knowledge in coding in a fun learning way.

One of the favorite activities for my Pk & kinder students is the codemonkey Jr, that allows them to practice/learn the mouse skills and directions.
Moreover, our 2nd -5th grade students enjoyed practicing math with Dodo do math coding challenges. Thank you Codemonkey team for the recent addition of new courses and features to make navigation easier in the teacher dashboard.

I am a second grade teacher and my students very much enjoyed using CodeMonkey! The activities were appropriate for their grade level, they weren't confused by anything, and it was a wonderful introduction to coding. My students could not get enough during Hour of Code and begged for more, so I think that's a very good sign. I enjoyed completing the activities as well - whether to test them to see if they were too difficult or too easy for my students or to preview them ahead of time so I would know how to help my students. This program is very well done and would be applicable and useful in all classrooms!
