GROUPORT: A Stark Example of Predatory Therapeutic Practices

GROUPORT, a company offering group therapy sessions, stands as a glaring example of such malpractices in the therapeutic sector, an area where one would least expect to encounter them.

In my personal experience, after signing up for their services, I received no email confirmation, nor were there any follow-up calls for intake. This lack of communication could easily lead to clients forgetting about the service, especially if they seek alternatives, as I did.

The predatory aspect becomes glaring when, despite the absence of service, charges are levied on the client's credit card. When confronted, GROUPORT’s response was far from empathetic or understanding. Instead of addressing the issue, they refused to provide a refund and responded with a procedure for “canceling membership”—a process irrelevant to those who never received the service in the first place. This response is not only unethical but also potentially in violation of consumer protection laws, like those in New Jersey.

The irony is profound and disturbing—a counseling service, whose very essence is supposed to be about aiding and supporting individuals, engaging in exploitation. It's a breach of the trust that clients place in these services, often during their most vulnerable times.

GROUPORT’s actions highlight a significant concern: the need for stringent regulation and oversight in the therapeutic services sector. Grouport is a predatory service that a) claims to practice therapy but after getting people to sign up, informs them they do not do therapy, b) secretly signs people up to subscriptions that cost hundreds of dollars on a short rotating basis, c) refuse to give refunds, and d) refuse to cancel clients who ask to be canceled, forcing clients to manually cancel themselves. Both their billing policy and their cancellation form are buried on their website. These are all hallmarks of predatory services, as is the fact that they advertise themselves to people in need of healthcare.

The group basically read a Word document to us each week. The materials were supposed to be provided a week in advance but were often provided only hours before the session.

They also make the process to cancel the subscription incredibly difficult. There is a portal you must use to cancel (regardless of any other communication), but the portal does not confirm if the termination was successful. Additionally, they are completely unsympathetic about this and they do not issue refunds if it wasn't successful. There is also no support number to call to confirm that the termination was successful.
