During May 2023, thanks to a conference in Montreal, I finally had the perfect opportunity to enjoy one of the places that had been on my bucket list ever since the day I heard Zita Cobb speak at a travel conference about 10 years earlier. Jumping on a call with my friend and colleague Marc Telio to learn how to make this possible the idea started becoming very real. Due to the total trust and admiration for Marc and his team I asked them to guide me 100% on timings, flights and ‘give me instructions not options’ to ensure I got the most out of my time on Fogo Island.
This included flying to Halifax from Montreal with an overnight stay before flying out to Gander the following day. On arrival in Gander just outside the Arrivals Hall there was the biggest smile awaiting us – Sean, a former fisherman, who now works for the Inn was the perfect person to introduce us to the next few days.

We landed at lunchtime and Sean took us to a nearby Deli for some great tasting sandwiches as we hung on to his every word as he started to introduce us to Gander and the area and what we would be soon enjoying. The drive was around 90 minutes, as promised, and took us through some beautiful, rugged nature to the ferry boat which would take us over to the Island. On arrival at the ferry station there was quite a line up but ‘no problem at all’ - Sean pulled up to the ferry ahead of the cars, dropped us and our bags, and his colleague accompanied us on board and told us to reach out if we needed anything as she was just one deck down. We choose to stay out on the top deck to enjoy the incredible scenery as we started our one-hour ferry ride to Fogo Island .. As I write this I am laughing at the memory of seeing this tiny iceberg which we got so excited about – little did we know what was to come. On arrival at Fogo Island we were greeted by another huge smile before we enjoyed a pleasant drive to the Inn.

On arrival the welcome was so warm, and it was a great ‘taste’ of what was to come. As I went to my room, actually the stunning Sunrise Corner Suite, I just fell in love with the place even more and thought I don’t want to sleep I want to spend every moment awake and just take in this incredible corner of the world.

To say I loved every minute on the Island is the understatement of the year – the friendliness of the people we met, the simple authentic and very genuine hospitality here was above and beyond. Every single person we met including Martin our amazing community host, Travis our hiking guide, Joan who welcomed us to her home and taught us how to make Jam – the Foley’s who welcomed us into their Shed to share a beer and a song the list goes on and on. I love to say ‘Its All about the People’ and Fogo Island was the perfect example of this …

Some of the biggest surprises that I enjoyed at Fogo Island included the quality of the food which was amazing – every meal was memorable. The simple beauty of the Inn and little touches that make it so special. I loved watching documentaries about the Inn and hits story during my stay there. I did not expect Icebergs – we had an amazing afternoon on a boat to see the Icebergs up close and personal with some local very friendly fishermen. The way the community embraced each and every visitor to Fogo Island is truly second to none. Being in the Travel Industry I have enjoyed many countries and travel experiences over the years but the way I was made to feel at Fogo Island and the Inn can only be compared to another recent Bucket List trip – the one that took me hiking to Base Camp Everest.

Since leaving Fogo Island I have studied so much about the area – Martin, our Community Host and Sean, our Driver gave us so much information about growing up here and their lives which totally fascinated me. I hope to be able to return to Fogo Island and the Inn in the future with my husband who I know will love it as much as I do. Thank you Zita Cobb, Sorya Gaulin, Marc Telio and your amazing team for enabling me to live an unforgettable experience and giving me lifelong memories that will always bring a smile to my face and warm my heart.

Great experience working with Entree Alaska. Judith & her team created a wonderful custom itinerary for my clients. The consistent communication & updates from their staff was exceptional. They were able to secure the hotel my clients really wanted in Denali National Park even though there was no availability without a cancellation. They stayed focused & were able to secure a room as soon as a cancellation came in which made me look like a travel advisor rock star! I will definitely reach out to Entree Alaska for any future Alaska land requests.
