Sofia had a question passed on to her from another employee at Clever Student Lets. It was not an urgent question, but it was one which was beginning to concern me.
I received a reply by email quite promptly with the answer and assurances I needed.

I emailed clever to ask for permission to keep a hamster in my room while I'm at uni to keep me company as things can get lonely occasionally in uni life. The following day, early morning I received an email telling me that it was being checked with the landlord and then not long after that I was given permission. This was all done swiftly thanks to Sofia who was responsive and helpful, so I thank her very much. Overall an excellent experience and now I have a furry little friend 🐹. Thank you Sofia!

My experience with Clever wasn't a great one. To start, the tactics which their agents deploy in order to sell properties are not very ethical. Gaslighting and convincing impressionable students that the house they are looking around is being 'viewed by multiple people today so you better buy it now!' and persistently asking for 'five star reviews' was something I encountered many times. On one occasion I was booked in to view some properties, the agent not only took us to the wrong property, but took us to properties which I had not even requested to visit/ did not match my requirements. After this, he said he would buy me a pint if I gave him a five star review... I found this quite embarrassing on his behalf and very unprofessional. In regards to the property I did live in for the university year, that was pretty awful as well. I would be here for hours if I was to describe every maintenance issue I had- while I understand that maintenance problems can be normal, especially in older houses like the one I rented in, I still found it very poor how Clever wished to charge me, and often at times, request that I fix these maintenance issues myself. I found it especially unfair, when part of my rent included that a cleaner was to come once a month for a communal clean. I can say in full confidence that a cleaner only came to the property 4 times throughout my 11 month tenancy. I mentioned this to Clever throughout, but nothing was every resolved. Once my tenancy ended, and I thought that my time with Clever was finally over, they then charged me an additional £52 for a end of tenancy clean. I thought this was pretty hilarious when the actual cleaner never turned up to the property. My flatmates were all equally confused at this charge; when we left the property it was spotless. As they rent through a private landlord, 'they cannot do anything about these charges' so unless you request to dispute the claim, you will lose your money. If you rent through Clever, which in my opinion, you shouldn't, then just be ready for lies, problems and errors. My entire first year of university was hindered greatly by the unfair treatment from Clever.

Clever Student Lets successfully re-let a room for us due to a change of circumstances. What could have been a very difficult and stressful process was made so much easier by a team of dedicated people. Huge thanks to Sofia, Ellie and Angel who were very patient and efficient throughout.

Ryan came down out of hours, was very quick after initial phone call and sorted issue promptly.

Clever have been managing my property for a number of years. During this time the the service and admin has improved tremendously to get to its current high standard. The Lettings Manager Abby is super friendly and helpful as are the Maintenance team, the Accounts team and general admin team. Any problems that arise are dealt with efficiently and promptly by friendly helpful staff. Well done Clever.

Richard made the whole process of selling my house really quick and easy - took all of the pain out of a typically difficult process and dealt with everything whilst keeping in updated at every step. Would 100% use for a house sale/purchase again!

Clever took over from right move at the end of my first year, in the first year I had mould in my room, a bubble of water from the ceiling that burst onto the carpet, so for 2nd year I asked for a carpet clean as it was brown stale water that went onto the carpet, I had to fight to not be charged for the carpet clean and hand in evidence, in short I won, if you’re going to rent with them, make sure you document every problem you have and take photos.
During some of 2nd year the main door and front door didn’t need fobs to access the building due to the locking system not working, it didn’t feel very safe.
3rd year many front doors in the building were breaking, which our flat did and needed a replacement, but instead of seeing the correlation with the doors breaking, charged the person who was unlucky enough to open the door when it broke.

Poor customer service, Hidden charges, rude to customers, taking advantage of students alien to the city.
AVOID UNLESS YOUR VERY DESPERATE!

This is my second year renting from Clever Estates as a student. I was liaising with Sofia D`Alessio - who was so helpful , professional and friendly to deal with. I had an issue my end delaying the application. However, Sofia gave me amazing advice and looked for other solution's for me to resolve the issues and this worked and I have my tenancy all ready to go. Without the knowledge and support of Sofia I would not of been able to continue. She is a problem solver and always keeps you updated regularly and great communication to put your mind at rest. Also if there is any tasks or admin to be completed her end - she does it straight away and no delays. Thank you Sofia for another year renting with CLEVER and helping me stay in the same building as I feel very safe there as a young female student. Thank you also to also the maintenance team as they are all so friendly and helpful when you need them and great communication. Thank you all at Clever Estates for your help and looking forward to my new tenancy.

Abby was well organised taking time to gather facts about the property and to then selected the best possible way to market it. The property was let to a group of students very quickly. Clever seems well organised and able to offer a flexible management package for the property.

Ellie was fabulous , I had lots of things I wanted from a let but in no timeshe advised me on where was best for my budget and where would be best locations for me so I could finish my projects. A great committed company to helping anyone find a property with great staff and quick admin staff.
Would reckoned highly letting from Clever, Plymouth branch.
