What an excellent day out. The talent on display is amazing.... Well worth the travel from southwales!

From a technician’s point of view, the school trip to the British Ironwork Centre near Oswestry was extremely well run and surprisingly easy to support. I accompanied the staff and pupils throughout the day, helping with equipment, supervision, and general logistics, and the whole site was very well set up for visiting schools.

What stood out immediately was how organised the venue was. Coach access was straightforward, staff gave clear instructions on arrival, and there was plenty of room for groups to move around safely without feeling overcrowded. For anyone supporting educational visits, that makes a huge difference.

The pupils were engaged almost the entire time, which is not always easy on a full-day trip. The large metal sculptures and interactive areas kept their attention, and there were lots of opportunities for photos, sketching, and discussions. From a practical side, the layout made it easy to supervise groups while still giving the children freedom to explore and enjoy themselves.

I was also impressed by how accessible the learning opportunities were. Even students who do not usually engage much in classroom activities seemed genuinely interested in the engineering, recycling, and fabrication aspects of the displays. Several pupils asked thoughtful questions about how the sculptures were built and what materials had been reused, which showed how effective the experience was.

Facilities on site were excellent for schools, with clean toilets, seating areas, and good catering options for staff and pupils. The staff at the centre were approachable and helpful throughout the day, and everything ran on schedule without unnecessary delays or confusion.

Overall, it was a very successful trip from a support and technical perspective. Safe, organised, educational, and engaging — exactly what you hope for when accompanying a school visit.

After taking our Year 10 pupils on a school trip to British Ironwork Centre near Oswestry, I can honestly say it was one of the most engaging and inspiring educational visits we have organised in years. The children were absolutely fascinated from the moment we arrived. The enormous metal sculptures immediately captured their imaginations, and it was wonderful to see them so excited about art, recycling, wildlife conservation, and engineering all in one place.  

The staff were exceptionally welcoming and organised, making the day run smoothly from start to finish. As teachers, we particularly appreciated how well the visit linked to so many curriculum areas, including art, design technology, environmental awareness, and creative writing. The educational trails and artisan demonstrations kept the pupils fully engaged throughout the day, and there were countless opportunities for discussion and hands-on learning.  

One of the highlights for our pupils was seeing the famous sculptures made from recycled materials. They were amazed by the creativity involved and loved identifying everyday objects incorporated into the artwork. The site encouraged curiosity, teamwork, and thoughtful conversations about sustainability and protecting wildlife.  

The facilities were excellent for a school visit, with plenty of space for packed lunches, easy coach access, and safe walking routes around the grounds. The combination of outdoor learning, creativity, and fresh air made it a fantastic experience for both pupils and staff alike.  

I would highly recommend British Ironwork Centre to any school looking for a memorable, educational, and inspiring trip. Our pupils are still talking about it days later, which says everything about the impact the visit had on them.

The booking service is really good and very efficient. Staff were really helpful and kind and communication is very good.
The whole site is amazing and there is so much to do and see. Having the buggies is very useful as some of our group are unable to walk very far and they mean you can see much more of the site. Also, it's really nice to have such a good cafe with lovely food.

Brilliant Booking!
We have received fantastic service when booking for a large school party of junior age children. The booking team have been incredibly helpful and have found us two consecutive days for our group visits. Resources are accessible and engaging and the sculptures and extinction trail tie in brilliantly with our work on sustainability.

The British Ironwork Centre is a lovely place, and we spent about half a day there looking around some of the sculptures on a blustery day. The scale of them and the scope of their topics was inspiring. And then there was the Afternoon Tea, which was for my auntie’s birthday celebration. The sandwiches were fresh, hot chunky chips the scones were huge and fresh, and the cakes were awesome, in fact none of us could finish them off and the staff were more than accommodating in providing a takeaway box for each of us presented in a little pink bag. It was unhurried, welcoming and a perfect venue for a celebration

We’ve had a fantastic experience of booking a school visit to the British Ironworks Centre. Staff have been excellent at accommodating our large party over two consecutive days and supporting us to plan our trip. There are a great range of resources to use, such as the sculpture trail maps, that help us to structure the day and the ‘extinction trail’ in particular is a great link to our work on animals and sustainability!

Excellent Experience! We booked a school trip for 3 classes to visit the British Ironworks Centre over a period of 2 days. Chloe was brilliant at accommodating our large numbers and quickly finding two consecutive dates that worked for us all. She responded swiftly to my emails and answered any questions we had. The extinction trail and sculptures- link perfectly to our Discovery chapter and work on sustainability !

Wondering place to visit. The sculptures were amazing, lovely to walk around inside and out. Great gift shop with quirky gifts and the afternoon tea was delicious. I won't be going back just to see the sculptures for the chips too!

Booking our class visit to the Ironwork Centre has been really straightforward. The staff I have been in contact with have been quick to reply and very helpful. When I showed photos of the site to my class, they were already very excited to see the sculptures up close. We are particularly looking forward to the extinction trail which ties in with our work on art and science.
