I had a great experience with Step Inside Portugal. After my original accountant filed my Portuguese tax return incorrectly, their team quickly stepped in and efficiently corrected the errors. They were highly professional, responsive, and provided clear guidance throughout the process. The service was smooth, and their expertise gave me peace of mind. I used this company for tax return…Unreliable Service, Lack of Responsibility – Not Worth the Cost
I used this company for tax return assistance since it was my first time in Portugal, and I wanted the process to go smoothly. After providing all the required details, they missed adding important information into their system. As a result, my tax return wasn’t processed efficiently. When I raised the issue with them, their response was simply, "Sorry, we missed that detail." No further assistance was offered, and they didn’t take responsibility for their error. I had to make an appointment and personally attend the tax office to correct their mistake, which defeated the purpose of using their service in the first place.
Furthermore, in order to provide this service, they required my access details to the tax office, with the assurance that these would be deleted from their files once the process was completed. I requested confirmation of this deletion, but they never sent it, which I find highly irresponsible.
I don’t recommend this company, and I’d like to share that I then found out the steps for filing a tax return in Portugal are well-documented and very simple to do online. Even ChatGPT explains it clearly! The company charges an excessive fee for what are basic tasks and seems to take advantage of foreigners who are unfamiliar with the process. Based on their lack of accountability and poor performance, I wouldn’t recommend their services to anyone.
UPDATE POST RESPONSE: I would like to provide further clarification regarding your response to my review and the overall experience I had with your service.
Firstly, it’s worth noting that after reading my review, you sent me an email stating that I chose the "ugliest and most unfair" method to provide feedback by leaving a review on Trustpilot. This is ironic, considering your own emails encourage customers to leave feedback—unless, of course, you only welcome positive reviews.
Now, regarding the points you made in your response:
My primary reason for engaging your services was that it was my first time doing this process in Portugal, and I had limited knowledge. Additionally, I have limited time for these types of tasks, which is why I trusted that using your service would make the process smooth. However, even if the check had arrived at my address (which it did not), I would have had to personally handle the deposit at the bank, which defeats the purpose of hiring a service to simplify things. Furthermore, I was only informed that I would receive it via check after two attempts to obtain an update, during which the initial responses indicated that I would receive it via bank transfer.
The Error in the Tax Return
While I appreciate that you accepted my request after your internal deadline, this decision was entirely yours and does not explain why the IBAN was not included correctly in the first place. This was an error on your part, and regardless of timing, it directly affected the refund process.
Financial Impact
To say there was no financial impact is both incorrect and dismissive. As of today, September 25th, I still have not received the refund. Claiming there was no loss shows a lack of understanding of how not having access to expected funds impacts individuals financially. You have no insight into whether I was relying on those funds within the expected timeframe.
Communication Delays and Data Security
Despite requesting the deletion of my access details, I received no response for over seven business days regarding whether my personal data had been deleted, which is concerning given the sensitivity of the information involved. Eventually, I had to change my password for security purposes. It is also disheartening that I only received a response from you once I posted my review on Trustpilot.

Thank you for sharing your opinion, and we are sorry that our service did not meet your expectations. We would like to clarify several points to ensure your feedback is understood in the proper context:
1) Contracting at the End of the Deadline
On April 6th, you requested a fee proposal, which we sent on April 9th for €150 + VAT. However, on May 1st, after making the payment, you informed us that it was done by mistake. We immediately processed a full refund without charging the 0.5% fee (€7.50) that the payment platform charged us.
Later, on June 13th, you contacted us again to request our assistance, which we accepted without any issues, even though our policy is to commit to filing tax returns by June 30th only if approval and document submission occur by June 10th. In your case, we received all documents on June 19th, but to ensure timely filing, we sent your return for review on June 20th. You approved it on June 24th, and we immediately submitted it, 7 days before the deadline.
2) The Alleged "Error" in Your Tax Return
We would like to clarify that your tax return was filled out correctly, and your refund was processed with the exact amount. There was no financial harm or any serious error.
However, due to the late submission, there was a mistake where we did not include your IBAN, resulting in your refund being issued by check, as recorded by the Portuguese Postal Service. Unfortunately, even though the records indicated delivery, you did not receive the check, which is not imputable to us.
We informed you that, due to restrictions by the Tax Authority, canceling the check online was not possible, and you would need to wait until the check expired to request a bank transfer refund. Nonetheless, you chose to personally go to the tax office to request the cancellation, which can only be done by the taxpayer in person.
In conclusion, there was no error in your tax return, just a lapse in submitting the IBAN. We regret the inconvenience caused by the postal service, but we made every effort to ensure your return was filed on time to avoid any financial loss (and in fact there was no financial loss).
3) Confidential Information – Access to the Tax Portal
We understand your concern regarding access to the Tax Portal. It is mandatory to have your login credentials in order to prepare and submit your tax return.
At no point did we intend to store or archive this information after the process was completed. We assure you that your privacy and security are our priority, and should you feel any concern, you can change your Tax Portal password at any time for added peace of mind.
4) Refund of Our Fees
Finally, we must express our disappointment that this review appears to stem from us not agreeing to refund our fees, despite the fact that the service was fully delivered. Your tax return was submitted on time, and your refund was received correctly. We delivered the service in full and regret that the situation caused dissatisfaction.
We are always open to dialogue and available to assist with any further concerns.

As a NHR client I've been working with Ana for ~2.5 years now after having made two bad experiences with another Tax consultant and larger agency. If you ask 3 tax consultants you'll get 4 different opinions. Because of my experience I used to be a doubtful client but Ana was always able to backup her tax asssesment with references to the tax law. Additionally she's proved to be very reliable - which is definetely rare in Portugal. Once she has even responded to some of my questions during the christmas holidays!
I had quite some unique challenges such as an aquisition while changing tax residency that also involved international tax law and a double tax treaty but she was able to handle all of that.
In case of questions she's always available via WhatsApp. I like being more in charge of filing my recibos verdes, quarterly niss, vat declarations and so on which is totally possible using their step-by-step guides.

I wish I could give a higher rating but I honestly cannot. Hired this company to help me open a bank account prior to my trip to Portugal. First red flag was a rather short and rude reply on Whatsapp when I wanted to clarify something in their initial email. I wish I turned back then.
I made a payment to them in June, and sent them all my documents, alongside extra documents they requested. My account wasn't opened until the tail end of July. You'd think my problems would be over then? Nope. I had to go down to the bank myself to update my phone number with them. Then, I learned that although they had my residency contract/info/address they put the wrong address in my documents to the bank.... which I have to change.
The process wouldn't be so difficult except they opened my account in a branch that isn't anywhere close to me, so the branch I am liaising with now has to constantly keep communicating with a "home branch" this company opened for me.
The icing on the cake? There have multiple emails to me from this company which clearly indicates that even they don't know what's going on. For example after I mailed them some documents I got an email weeks later asking me to send them the documents.
This has been the most I've ever paid for a service like this and also the most inconvenience I've ever experienced. I'm usually not one to make a big deal out of nothing but this has just been a massive waste of my time and money. I was keen on using their accounting services but after seeing how they handled this process there's no way in Hell I'll be doing so. Perhaps that's the silver lining in all this: some cosmic force is telling me to not use their accounting services by making this experience as terrible as humanly possible.

Many thanks for your review, and please be informed that we are deeply concerned that you were not satisfied with our services.
Firstly, we note that we checked the whatsapp conversation and we don't think we were rude in our replies. We understand that there was a misinterpretation and that our colleague didn't really understand your initial question, but after some insistence on your part she answered your request. We realise that sometimes these means of communication don't convey or convey exactly how people want to communicate and sometimes the fact that we're not both speaking in our mother tongue can lead to confusion. I'm sorry if you felt that we were rude to you, as that was never our intention.
Secondly, with regard to the time it took to open the bank account, we would like to inform you that between the day you sent us the documents to open the bank account - 19 June - and the day the bank account was opened - 25 July - approximately one month passed. When you contacted us by whatsapp and asked us how long it would take, we told you that "It can take up to a month, but as a rule it takes up to 15 working days". In that sense, we feel that we didn't disappoint any expectations. However, we recognise that there was a delay in opening the bank account and that this delay was due exclusively to the bank, a fact that we unfortunately do not control, and which we informed you of by email at the time.
Thirdly, with regard to the branch where we opened the bank account, we would like to inform you that for speed and agility in the process we always work with the Prestige Aveiro branch because it has been the one where we have had the best experience in terms of speed of response and customer service. As soon as the bank account is opened, the account is transferred to the branch of the customer's choice. Often when clients open their accounts they haven't yet moved to Portugal and it would obviously be impractical for us to work with all the branches in the country (of which there are hundreds), so we concentrate on just one branch and then the account is transferred to the branch of the client's choice.
Fourthly, with regard to the errors that occurred when registering the address, we are very sorry, but at no time were we informed of this by the bank or by you, otherwise we would obviously have attended to the matter promptly.
Finally, with regard to our colleague's last email asking again for the documents, this was an oversight (as we already have standard emails) and our colleague actually wanted to send the last email in the process informing that the bank account was open, as you had already been informed by the bank. To err is human and we cannot condemn our colleague for having made a mistake that did nothing to harm the situation and which she then promptly clarified.
We are very sorry you had a bad experience with our support. As you can see, we have always had very positive reviews on Trustpilot, which shows our concern that our customers are satisfied and that they have the best possible experience.
We would like to inform you that we have already requested a refund of the fees you paid for this service. We have an uncompromising customer satisfaction policy and we absolutely do not want to charge you for a service that you were not satisfied with.
We have also offered you a tax consulting meeting but unfortunatly you did not reply to our emails.
Please be informed that we remain available for any further assistance.
