Reviews are usually written by the incredibly satisfied or the comedically enraged. I’m neither. I’m just a customer who spent a significant amount of money and has been left disappointed by the experience.
I chose Recon Engines because they present themselves as specialists, and I trusted them to do a good job. I have no reason to doubt their technical expertise, and I understand that no company can be held responsible for every fault that occurs on a vehicle. However, the customer service and the way my situation has been handled have left a lot to be desired.
After paying for the engine rebuild, I was told I needed to return for a service. This hadn’t been made clear to me beforehand. I was expecting to pay around £70, but the quoted service cost, even with the discount, didn’t include the oil and filter change, bringing the actual cost to nearly three times what I had anticipated.
More concerningly, a system fault appeared almost immediately after I collected the car. I had barely driven away before it became apparent. The car was briefly checked, but I was eventually asked whether I was “going to take it or not”. As a customer who had just paid for significant work, this didn’t inspire confidence.
I followed their advice, had the car serviced by Recon Engines, replaced the battery after low-voltage readings and arranged the diagnostic checks they recommended. When the problem persisted, I took it to a transmission specialist.
Their subsequent inspection identified gearbox slipping, low shifting pressure, clunking during gear changes and very little gearbox fluid. They added two litres of fluid. They also documented oil leaks from the newly installed engine, including around the timing cover and at the point where the engine joins the gearbox. Their report raised the possibility that the gearbox fluid issue could be connected to the gearbox being removed and refitted during the engine installation.
To be fair, this report does not conclusively prove that Recon Engines caused the gearbox problem. I have never claimed that it does. However, given that the fault appeared immediately after the work and the gearbox had to be removed and refitted as part of the installation, I don't think it is unreasonable to expect them to investigate whether there is a connection, rather than simply treating it as an unrelated gearbox issue.
My frustration is less about expecting them to accept blame without evidence and more about feeling that I have had to do all the chasing, arrange the investigations and bear the uncertainty and additional costs myself. I have tried to be reasonable throughout, and I even left a five-star review initially because I wanted to acknowledge their expertise. Unfortunately, the experience since then hasn't justified that rating.
Ultimately, I think the company lacks emotional intelligence when dealing with customers. There is a difference between explaining why something might fall outside the scope of your work and making a customer feel that their concerns are being taken seriously. Their tagline talks about helping people get back on the road, but that has felt far from the priority in my experience so far.
I would encourage anyone considering using them to make sure they understand all servicing requirements and costs upfront, and to keep a clear written record of everything.
And, if my experience is anything to go by, look out for the long, overly AI-sounding response that seemingly shifts all responsibility away from the company without really addressing how the customer has been left feeling.

Our company was instructed to undertake engine-related repairs, and the work carried out was specific to the engine. The gearbox and its internal components were not part of the agreed repair works. While we appreciate that the transmission fault became apparent following collection, the timing of a fault does not, in itself, establish that it was caused by the engine repairs.
We acknowledge that you subsequently arranged an independent transmission inspection. However, as you have correctly recognised in your review, the findings do not conclusively establish that Recon Engines caused the gearbox issues. We therefore cannot reasonably accept responsibility for faults outside the agreed scope of work without evidence demonstrating a connection to the repairs we undertook.
Regarding the reported oil leaks, these are separate from the gearbox concerns and would need to be properly inspected to establish their source and whether they relate to any work carried out by our company. With regard to the running-in service, this is an important part of the maintenance requirements following an engine rebuild. The purpose of this service is to ensure the engine is operating correctly during its initial running-in period. We would also like to address your comments regarding customer service. We understand that experiencing further vehicle problems after paying for substantial repairs can be frustrating. Our responsibility is to ensure that the work we have been contracted to undertake is completed to the appropriate standard and to address any verified issues relating to that work. This does not automatically extend to unrelated mechanical systems or faults that may arise elsewhere on the vehicle.
We have provided guidance regarding the issues reported and the further investigations required. While we appreciate that this may not have resulted in the outcome you were hoping for, our position has been based on the information and evidence available rather than an attempt to dismiss your concerns.
Finally, we acknowledge your comments regarding the tone of our correspondence. We aim to communicate clearly, professionally and accurately, particularly when discussing technical findings, repair responsibilities and warranty matters. UPDATE: SECTION 75 CLAIM SUCCESSFULLY WON — AVOID THIS COMPANY
After a year of paperwork, form-filling and frustration, I have finally had my Section 75 claim resolved successfully and recovered every penny of the money claimed. It was a long and exhausting process, but I got there in the end.
Sadly, I suspect it may ultimately be the credit card provider who has footed the bill, rather than the people responsible for this appalling experience. Either way, I hope this update gives others affected by this company the encouragement to persevere and fight for their money back. Over the past year, I’ve met some genuinely lovely people who have had similarly distressing experiences.
Please do not give up, and do not hand over any more money without carefully considering your options.
My experience was that I was initially quoted under £3,000, only for the final bill to rise to around £5,000. By that point, my engine had already been removed, leaving me in an extremely difficult position.
The work was, in my experience, completely substandard. My car was returned with concerning engine noises, despite having covered very little mileage since the repair. An independent automotive inspection subsequently identified serious issues consistent with problems in the timing assembly, with the report raising concerns about the timing chain and the potential danger of continuing to drive the vehicle.
I raised concerns within the three-month warranty period after collecting the car in August 2025, but was repeatedly met with excuses and told there was no availability to inspect it. When I eventually obtained an independent assessment and returned to the company with the findings, I found their response dismissive and unhelpful. I felt they were relying on the limited warranty period rather than properly addressing the concerns I had raised.
The outcome? Around £5,000 spent, a car returned in an unacceptable condition, and a year of fighting to recover my money.
I would urge anyone considering using this company to do their research carefully. I would also advise people to approach positive online reviews with caution and assess the evidence for themselves.
I am also concerned that the business appears to operate under different names, which can make it harder for customers to find previous complaints and negative reviews. Please check the business details carefully before committing to any work.
To everyone else who has been affected: keep your evidence, retain all correspondence, obtain an independent report where appropriate, and explore your rights under Section 75 if you paid by credit card and your circumstances qualify.

Firstly, your vehicle was supplied with a second-hand replacement engine, not a fully rebuilt engine. This distinction is important, as these are two different services with different warranty arrangements.
The second-hand replacement engine was supplied with a 3-month or 3,000-mile warranty, whichever occurred first, which was clearly outlined in the terms and conditions provided.
Your vehicle was completed and collected in August 2025. According to our records, you contacted us in December 2025 regarding concerns with the vehicle, after the three-month contractual warranty period had expired.
With regard to your comments about pricing, our initial quotations are estimates provided before the full condition of an engine can be established. Following inspection, customers are presented with the findings and the available repair or replacement options, including the associated costs, before authorising further work.
Regarding your statement about successfully pursuing a Section 75 claim, we acknowledge your right to seek assistance from your credit card provider. However, we would clarify that the acceptance of such a claim does not automatically constitute a legal finding of negligence, defective workmanship or wrongdoing by Recon Engines Ltd.
We also strongly dispute the suggestion that our company deliberately operates under different names to conceal negative reviews or mislead prospective customers. We take such allegations seriously and do not believe they fairly represent our business practices.
We understand that further mechanical issues can be frustrating, particularly after significant expenditure. However, a second-hand replacement engine is not equivalent to a fully reconditioned engine, and the nature of the service supplied and its contractual warranty should be accurately represented.
We recognise that statutory consumer rights are separate from contractual warranty arrangements, and nothing in our warranty terms is intended to exclude those rights.

I honestly felt the team shared sympathy the my fate, from recovery from my local trusted garage, 3hrs up the M4, the team, specifically James, kept me in the loop to the build progress, and costs.
I genuinely believe they strive to get the machine fixed, not just back on the the road.
I also believe the entire are striving to build a great reputation, learning from customer comments.

We originally had a quote of£1495 which turned out to approx £5000 and from refusing and saying I’ll pay and have car back in bits delivered back then changed to having a supposedly second hand engine that was supposed to have only done 26000 miles bearing in mind that my original engine had only done 41000 I managed to get the price back down from the £5000 plus quote to approx £3000 but the truth of the matter is they promise you a price inflate it once the engine out and takes literally months and I mean months to do it and the truth is you don’t know what you are getting what’s been changed and what’s good or bad but what I do know is they con you one way or another and when you collect the car they try and force you into doing a review there and then trying to bribe you with a sad £20 off your bill for doing it but I would rather leave a true review so as to warn others and stop them making the same mistake I made and the £20 is only what they conned out of me in the first place would I recommend them certainly not I could go on and on but hates texting but do wonder how they get so many good reviews they must make them up or friends family etc I FELT I NEEDED TO ADD excluding the time scale and cost the car do RUN AND DRIVES SUPERBLY so thank you for that

The initial quotation of £1,495 + VAT was clearly provided as an estimate for removing, dismantling, assessing, rebuilding and refitting your existing engine, subject to the condition and reusability of the internal components once inspected. As outlined in the engine report provided to you, significant additional faults were discovered during dismantling, including damaged camshafts, scored oil pump, piston skirt damage, damaged camshaft adjuster, stripped cambelt teeth and turbocharger issues.
At this stage, we fully explained the extent of the damage and the associated costs required to rebuild the original engine correctly and reliably. When you advised that you did not wish to proceed with the higher rebuild cost, we worked with you to provide an alternative replacement engine option at a substantially discounted rate in order to help reduce the overall expense.
We categorically deny that anyone was “conned” or misled. All additional costs were discussed and authorised before any further work was carried out, and the vehicle was never repaired without your agreement. Unfortunately, major internal engine damage can only be identified once the engine has been stripped and assessed, which is standard practice within the industry.
We appreciate that engine repairs can be stressful and expensive, but we always aim to provide transparent information and practical options based on the condition of the vehicle.

Avoid this company at all costs
Avoid this company at all costs. The 5 star reviews can not be real. They gIve you a quote, then remove your engine, then double the quote. You either have to pay them to get your vehicle back (without the engine) or pay the enlarged quote. They do this for everyone. I'm in touch with hundreds of people they have done this to.

When I started talking to Reconengines…
When I started talking to Reconengines about my blown engine, they explained every part of the process and after they picked my car up and got it back to the garage, I had a detailed report after they had stripped my engine with a video explanation. James (Mechanic) was always very helpful and explained things if I phoned him up. On completion and collection of the car, I was given a detailed report of everything that was done to my engine. I found the service provided by Reconengines to be absolutely fantastic. Highly recommend this service.

We had scored piston rings (common problem for this model), and they came in about 50% cheaper than dealer quote in the end. Would definitely recommend to anyone with a similar issue if can’t fix on warantee. Just need to be aware that you’ll only get full total quote after the initial diagnosis so expect price to be higher than just the first stage quote. Car has been running fine for about 3 weeks, the one year warantee is better than most other places I looked at as well.

Avoid this company at all costs or you are in for months of anguish. These guys are borderline criminal. After having picked up my car after letting us down several times with some excuse about their driver being in hospital, they quoted me £1495 + vat to fix my engine, assuring me it would be running and giving me a full list of what was included in the price, including the diagnostic and rebuild. After taking my engine apart they then changed the quote to £6000. When I told them that that was obviously not going to happen, and asked them to honour the original contract, they refused and told me I had to pay the full amount or they would not rebuild the engine for me to collect. I told them, I wasn't expecting it back running, I just needed it back in the condition it was when they collected it and I would arrange collection and pay the balance of the original quote. They refused and started ignoring all emails we sent them. They are now demanding we pay a further £2000 in storage charges as we have not collected the car, which is in pieces and which they refuse to put back as it was. So from an original quote of 1495 + vat, they are now demanding £8000 or they will dispose of the car and send bailiffs for their money. We have now had to involve trading standards and the financial ombudsman. I can't tell you how much stress this has put on our family.

We’re sorry to read your review and understand this has been a stressful situation for you. However, we feel it’s important to clarify the facts and provide full context.
At the time of booking, you were provided with an initial estimate of £1495 + VAT, which covered engine removal, dismantling, assessment, rebuild and refitting of your existing unit. As explained, this figure was subject to strip-down inspection and dependent on whether key components could be reused or reconditioned.
Regarding the initial delay, this was due to our recovery driver suffering a sudden gallbladder attack, which required hospital treatment and left him temporarily unable to work. This was an unforeseen medical emergency, and we kept you informed at the time.
Following a full inspection, your engine was found to have extensive internal damage, including (but not limited to):
* Cylinder liner damage requiring rebore across multiple cylinders
* Piston skirt damage requiring full replacement
* A scored oil pump
* Metal contamination affecting internal components such as camshaft solenoids
* Turbocharger failure, with oil contamination and excessive play in the propeller shaft requiring replacement
* Intercooler filled with oil
* Injector faults, including cylinder 4 injector requiring replacement and the remaining injectors requiring bench testing
* Additional failures across seals, cooling components, and ancillary parts
This reflects the **true condition of the engine once dismantled**, which unfortunately went far beyond what could reasonably be covered under the initial estimate.
We would also like to clarify that:
* The original estimate **included diagnostics, labour, and refitting only**, not replacement parts where components were beyond reuse
* It had been agreed via email that estimates may change following inspection
*It had also been via email that if payments are not received within 3 days of the engine report being received, the vehicle may be moved into storage and daily storage charges will apply
In addition, once the engine had been fully dismantled and the extent of the internal damage identified, it would not have been practical or appropriate to reassemble the engine in its previous state. As a result, all components were carefully wrapped and placed in the rear of the vehicle to allow for collection without causing further damage to any components.
Despite the difficulties in this case, after extended communication, we made efforts to significantly reduce the storage charges as a gesture of goodwill.
We appreciate that unexpected costs are frustrating, but the revised quotation was based entirely on the extent of mechanical failure identified during inspection, not a change of position.
