⭐ 1 Star – Left Without a Car, Income or Proper Communication

I strongly advise anyone considering OttoCar to think carefully before entering into an agreement with the company.

Following an incident, OttoCar withdrew my insurance and terminated my agreement with just 48 hours’ notice, leaving me without a vehicle and effectively without my livelihood. Because I rely on driving for work, the financial and personal consequences have been devastating.

The lack of communication has made matters worse. Despite sending 7 emails and making 9 telephone calls, I have received no meaningful response or explanation.

I am now unable to earn an income, with my mortgage and household bills due in just 13 days. The stress and uncertainty are extremely serious, especially when you have a family and financial commitments that do not stop because a company withdraws your vehicle and insurance.

I understand that companies have policies to follow, but customers deserve clear communication, fair treatment and a reasonable opportunity to understand decisions that significantly affect their lives. My biggest disappointment is not only losing the vehicle, but being left without answers after repeated attempts to make contact. When a vehicle is your means of earning a living, this is far more than a minor inconvenience—it can threaten your entire financial stability.

Based on my experience, I urge anyone considering OttoCar to review their agreement carefully, understand when their insurance and vehicle access could be withdrawn, and consider how they would cope if placed in the same situation.

I would not want another driver to experience the stress, uncertainty and financial hardship I am currently facing. I hope OttoCar takes these concerns seriously and improves its communication and treatment of customers in difficult circumstances.

This is without doubt the worst company I have ever dealt with—from their lazy, incompetent staff to their outright misleading sales and terrible customer service. I cannot recommend anyone uses them.

I took out a rent-to-buy agreement for a Skoda electric car. At the point of sale, they rushed me to sign the contract without giving me time to read it properly. When I asked if breakdown/mechanical issues were covered—especially given the £1,100 monthly payments—they assured me yes, of course. That was a lie.

After 1 year and 10 months, 88,000 miles, the powertrain failed—a major, expensive component. Suddenly their story changed: they told me I had to pay for everything. They claimed they only fix "small things"—and I suspect they’d even charge for a puncture. I refused to accept this, so I contacted Skoda directly, who confirmed the 2-year warranty covers all mechanical parts with no mileage limit (except the battery)—meaning this repair should have been fully covered.

I informed Otto… and heard nothing for nearly 2 months. During that time, they were also charging me £15/month for road tax—despite explicitly advertising no road tax on their vehicles. Another broken promise.

When I finally chased them, they told me I needed to formally request contract termination and wait another month—something they never mentioned up front. All communication was generic, copy-pasted template emails—no effort, no personal response, no care. After 5 weeks with no update, I called again; they said someone would call back shortly. No one did. When I finally got through, their termination fee kept changing—£250, then £200—no consistency, just trying to extract money. They even tried to charge me for wear on the wheel rims after 22 months of use!

From lying about coverage, ignoring warranty obligations, ignoring emails/calls, hidden fees, to just plain incompetence—this company is a nightmare. Save your money, save your stress—stay far away.

I have proof for everything

I had a Rent-to-Buy agreement with Otto Car for around 2 years for a Tesla Model 3, paying every weekly installment on time until I was involved in a non-fault road traffic accident where the car was written off. Following the accident, the Tesla locked electronically, trapping my personal belongings inside. Despite the vehicle being in Otto Car's custody, my belongings were never recovered or compensated.
As a result of the write-off, I lost all the money I had invested toward buying the car. To make matters worse, Otto Car forced me to continue paying full weekly rates for around 4 months while providing a lower-spec courtesy car.
On top of everything, despite promising to return my deposit, they still haven't refunded it a full year after the accident and after I stopped using the car.
They reliably collect your money for years, but when a non-fault accident happens, you are left out of pocket with lost property and broken promises. Still waiting for my deposit and belongings compensation.
I am now seriously considering filing a formal complaint directly with the BVRLA (British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association) Conciliation Service and taking this to Small Claims Court (Money Claim Online) to recover my deposit, my lost belongings, and demand a full accounting of the total loss insurance settlement under Clause 12.7.

Great customer service from Kafil and Sharvari, who both went above and beyond when dealing with my accident claim. Professional, helpful and genuinely supportive throughout.

Otto cars is a big company, it’s sometimes hard to get through the account or service team but Neha Parveen from the service team has been very helpful. She seems to be only the person who understood my circumstance and helped me accordingly.

They should say on the phone before you spend time and money while u make a reservation that they want you to have 1000 trips completed or 6 months minimum license before you can rent a car from them. Time and money wasters. Terrible at transparency with their terms and conditions.
