The lesson plan beforehand is helpful and there is good communication about the classes. There is a wide selection of classes to choose from at many different times of the day and different topics to choose from. The negative is the quality of teachers vary widely. Some are very good, some average, some bad. As time goes on, you may get to know the bad ones so you can avoid them. So far my experience has been mixed.

Good teaching but sadly, a terrible subscription model which doesn't allow classes to be booked while pausing due to accumulated credits.

Our courses are based on a monthly subscription model that renews every 28 days to encourage steady, consistent practice. When you have accumulated class credits, we usually suggest a few options. One is to downgrade to a smaller package to slow down incoming credits. Then, you can convert group class credits into private class credits to use them faster, and finally you can pause your subscription for up to 28 days if you need a temporary break. However, as you have said,credits can not be taken during the pause.
The pause feature freezes your subscription and pushes back your next billing date, but class booking is unavailable during this time since it is meant for periods when you are unable to study. Once the pause ends, you can resume taking your remaining credits with a refreshed schedule. We share more tips on managing your balance in our FAQ guide on accumulated credits:

OK, but a bit of an entrapment scheme
If you can commit to learning, Lingoda is a fantastic resource. The teachers are helpful and the lessons are useful. The issue with the platform is that you cannot keep credits you paid for if you stop your subscription, so if you fall behind and don't want to keep paying every month (and even the cheapest option is still very expensive), you can lose a lot of money for nothing. I would recommend exploring other services that are more flexible for speaking and listening practice.

At the same time, we completely understand your frustration regarding subscription management and credit expiration. Our courses are based on a monthly subscription structure to encourage regular practice, as consistency is key to language learning. However, we know that life happens and schedules change. The monthly subscription can be cancelled before the subscription renews every 28 days. The credits you purchased have a validity of 1 year from the date of purchase. They will stay on your student account for that one year, however, you do need an active subscription to access them.
We are constantly reviewing our subscription policies to find better ways to support our students' changing schedules.

Lingoda is a great supplement...
I love using Lingoda as a supplement to another app or two I use to learn French! Lingoda has short lessons that briefly, but clearly explain the grammar that will be reviewed in each lesson. They provide a vocabulary list and a pdf file of the material to review both before and after the class is over, with notes the instructor has written. This very same file is used during the class. The class is highly focused on speaking, which I do not get in any of my other apps!!!
The instructors do SOME teaching, but frequently, their focus is more on pronunciation and the whole conversational aspect of the class, rather than actively instructing. They will assist with understanding concepts and they also revert to English if it is necessary to get a point across, but a good 90% of the class is in French.
I also like the feedback they provide after the class, with some instructors recommending outside learning resources to help build and improve skills.
I feel like Lingoda has given me confidence to actually speak in the target language and useful information that I have already been able to utilize in real-world situations (cafes, grocery stores, transit, work, etc).

Highly recommend Lingoda
The teachers are generally really excellent. I used customized private lessons quite a bit in order to cover more in one class than a normal class - and the teachers really helped me get the most out of those classes. they bring excellent recommendations for how to improve and practice on your own, and they are great at getting me speaking and understanding the content of the class. i once had a teacher that was not great, and lingoda refunded me for the class and were very professional and kind about it. the website can be a little clunky when you want to practice on your own (using the practice materials they provide), but not too bad. expensive, but certainly worth your money!

The class was too advanced for me. I probably should have started at the beginning at 1.1 and risked repeating things that I knew rather than trying to pick and choose which classes I thought I was ready for.

Thank you for your honest feedback, Cindy. You are completely right, randomly picking classes won't get you very far, especially as a beginner.
We strongly recommend taking lessons in order, as each class builds on the material covered in the previous one. Our learning method is fully immersive, meaning the learning language is used from day one. Because of this, our Education team designs the lessons so students learn the necessary vocabulary step by step. Skipping ahead can easily feel overwhelming!

I like the format and structure of how the Lingoda courses are set up. I would have hoped there would be more choice for the time of the courses. I am in North America and learning German, the majority of the courses are during the very early hours of the morning (between 1am and 6am) or during my work day— I would like to see more offerings of courses in my evenjng (after 5pm EST)

However, we do understand your frustration regarding class times, as fitting language learning around a busy work schedule is a big commitment. That is exactly why we prioritise flexible class scheduling.
You can actually create a class for any time of the day as long as you book at least 7 days in advance. If you look further ahead on your schedule (beyond the 7-day window), you can set up a lesson for after 5 PM EST, and a qualified teacher will commit to teaching your class.
We are also working on making this feature much clearer on the classbooking page very soon, but in the meantime, we hope this helps you get the evening classes you need.

That One-Stop-Shop for Online Language Learning You Wanted
Lingoda is just what I wanted when I set out to find a language course online. Fully online, bookable lessons, practice in between. It covers a LOT of material, too. But, even though it gives you lots to develop with, the lessons are each VERY simple and easy to learn. So, it strikes a balance (very hard to do I imagine) between a lot you can learn and step-by-step progress. I'm really happy with Lingoda. I'd recommend it to anyone.

I have used the French lessons
I have used the French lessons/instructors, so my opinions are related to these only. My biggest complaint is that the system is definitely set up to favor the company and the instructors over students. There are a number of highly qualified and highly effective instructors that have been very helpful. Unfortunately, there are just as many that are not as helpful or effective and students have little to no control over who will teach the classes you sign up for. You cannot choose the instructor and if you cancel within 72 hours of the class you will be charged for the class (even though the instructor might change to someone you don't want to work with during that 72 hour time frame). Even if you schedule a private class, you cannot choose the instructor. This creates a situation that feels much like playing the lottery to see if you get someone that is effective or not. If you need classes at a particular time of day, it can be challenging, depending on your time zone. Instructor feedback (provided after the class is over) is pretty meaningless. For example, the feedback will be a list of two or three categories that you did well and one or more that you can improve. Sometimes the areas to improve are listed as "other", which is completely unhelpful. The better instructors provide written narative feedback that explains the cateogires, while others either leave generic comments that could apply to anyone, or none at all. It's also problematic that Lingoda doesn't assign native speakers based on the language you're learning. Although I am learning French, I may be assigned someone that is not a natrive French speaker, which has happened multiple times and often had a negative impact on the quality of the instruction. There's also an issue with the consistency of instruction because you work with a different instructor in almost every class, so it hasn't been uncommon to receive inconsistent information from the instructors. This makes learning a language very confusing and more difficult than it needs to be. There's very little material that's instructive within each class and some faculty have an expectation that you know things that have not been included in the curriculum. Although I'm glad to learn from them, when they skip slides and material that are part of the curriculum and add information that isn't it creates a new set of issues. I'll use the credits I've already paid for, but I won't be purchasing any new credits with Lingoda. I wish I hadn't purchased as many lessons as I have and would advise anyone new to Lingoda to take at least 10 lessons before purchasing a large package.
