Buy with caution and do not repeat my mistake.
I recently spent almost £500 on a silver mounted glass bowl and made a round trip of over 4 hours to collect it. As soon as I saw it, I wish that I had not bid on it as it has a +/- 10" crack through its base. When you know there is a crack, you can see part of it in one of the photographs in the online catalogue but unless you know it is a crack, you might assume like I did that the white flash was just a reflected light.
The auctioneer's Ts&Cs have a headline saying that defects are not stated and lots are sold as seen. This clearly means that even if an item has major damage, they will not include it in their description. I had read the Ts & Cs to check how long I had to collect the bowl as I have been overseas but completely missed this warning, even though it is in block capitals right at the start. This makes the purchase entirely my own fault but that doesn't stop me feeling disappointed with the auctioneers. I do not know of another reputable auction house that takes the approach of ignoring even major damage and am much more used to reading about cracks, chips and nibbles in catalogue descriptions.
I can only blame myself for spending money on something that I wish I didn't own, so please don't repeat my mistake and ask for a condition report for anything that you might want to buy from Harper Field.
