Generally a good bank, but I had a bad expereience with them regarding a personal load. Had a loan with them for 5 years, never missed a payment and have a great credit score. Asked for another loan and the rate dramatically increased without a reason.
They do not consider your past relationship.
Avoid like the plague. I've been with this bank since 1989 when they were the Commonwealth Public Service Credit Society. I recently noticed OnePass have been taking money from my credit card every month since December 2024 for a membership I don't have. Can't cancel the membership because OnePass have never heard of me, I don't have an account with them. GSB won't block the merchant, (they can if they want to) I have to get a new card which I don't want to do as a lot of direct debits I've set up have this card number. I complained...they suggested I might like a new bank. Their Complaints staff are rude and threatening...I was reminded of their terms and conditions where they can cancel all of my cards whenever they like.
I would give this bank a ZERO score if I could! Disgusting, sloppy, heartless customer service. This bank has gone down the toilet. It wasn’t always this bad. I have been a customer with Great Southern Bank of Australia for over 30 years since 1991 when it was known as CUA - Credit Union Australia. Our children are members, too. Now I’m urging them to leave. My husband and I both received letters dated March 1st informing us our accounts would be closed on March 22nd with no explanation or apologies offered. When I called customer service to ask WHY I was told “It’s a business decision”. Then I was dragged through hell trying to transfer my remaining balance to my new bank account. I was forced to chase them repeatedly to simply access my funds. I was told by GSB daft customer service I would be sent a check! In 2024 the bank can’t do a digital transfer?!? Thank heavens for AFCA - the Australian Financial Complaints Authority who assisted me. Without AFCA help I might still be waiting for my own money. I’m now banking with Qudos Bank which is excellent - it’s night and day. I warn anyone to avoid Great Southern Bank. Abandon hope all ye who enter there!
