I paid my British Gas electric bills every month by automatic direct debit, when I was with them, some years ago.
This company sent me a letter, saying that I owe over £1,200, using a made-up British Gas Client Ref.
Companies like this should be shut down, as some must be paying them, simply out of fear.😆

We received a letter from BW Legal stating that we owed a sum of £1289.41 to British Gas. Debt started Feb 2016 to October 2025.
We have only been in our current house since 2021. On moving, all outstanding accounts for gas and electricity were paid in full. We have not had an account with British Gas since 2021.
Additionally, the letter sent to us did not contain our names - it just said” householder” and the number wrongly ended with the letter A. No such house exists.
Attempts to make contact by phone were not answered and, after much persistence, I did manage to speak to customer relations who were curt and unhelpful.
To put this in context, we are in our 70s, retired and my husband has had cancer. This company does not carry out any due diligence and uses bullying and intimidating tactics to extort money.
Today I received a curt letter stating that the matter is now closed. The erroneous address was still there and letter had no personalisation but was signed BW Legal. There was no suggestion of an apology. I urge all people who are contacted by this company to report them to The Ombudsman and other monitoring agencies. I will also contact Martin Lewis and inform him of this rogue company. This way we may save other innocent people from a great deal of stress.

Extremely rude customer service when trying to explain a solve a case with a faulty British Gas invoice from two years back. Just cut off the line, twice, then deactivated the chat function.

bwlegal have been sending letters to my address chasing a debt owed by a former tenant…
The tenant in question vacated the property in March 2020…
Tried to arrange a callback… No callback.
Call waiting times… at least 15 minutes…

Having received a letter from BWLegal representing a well known energy supplier in the pursuit of an outstanding amount which I knew I did not owe, I contacted the energy supplier who told me I owed them nothing and to ignore the demand.
Having received a second letter of demand from BWLegal six weeks later I phoned them.

Having read the negative reviews here on Trustpilot before phoning I was defensive and feared that it may be a scam as I made the call.
Rest assured though that, primarily because of my job and my life experiences, I do not consider myself to be naïve.

Note, the on hold time told me 24mins at first but my call was answered withing 15mins.

This is the Important Part of this review -
The BW Legal representative I spoke to, did professionally, patiently, politely, calmly listen to my concerns, disbelief and distrust and then diplomatically dealt with my initial, guarded, passive-aggressive stance, also allowing me to do my own security check of them.
Then, during the course of the next 45mins, the BW Legal agent took me through a thorough process of explaining the potential reasons why the energy supplier may have raised this issue, which all made sense to me, followed by guiding me at a pace of my choosing through an investigation of memories and documented proof of my current and past energy suppliers, which I confess much of the detail of which I had forgotten about prior to this call, and in doing so led to the following; opening a particular memory of a 15year old issue with the current energy supplier from a past account, paper proof of not having an account with them during the part of the period in question, and, therefore, a strong, potential solving of the issue in hand.
A key point we discovered is that the reason the energy supplier truthfully said in the call I had with them that I owed nothing was because this issue applies to a different account number associated with my property, which I know nothing of.
And I cannot thank this agent enough for all they did to help me uncover this truth.

The main reason I have given such a long account of my experience is that, I think those of us in particular of a certain age, 60+, do tend to have a deep distrust of systems demanding money where we cannot be face to face with the person involved, and often rightly so.
As we all know, caution should always be at the forefront of any persons mind, and because few people write positive feedback when we have a positive experience with such companies, it may therefore compound our fears before making a call.

My point being - Be cautious but accept that nefarious intent is not always the case, I learnt today that being more open minded allows greater clarity during dealing with the situation.

Something I have also learnt from this interaction today, which will continue this afternoon as they are taking up the issue with the energy supplier and then calling me back, is to first gather together any paperwork or digital documents in your possession before making the call as this may help your confidence and will certainly make the call process swifter.

I accept that my review may be like 'a red rag to a bull' to anyone who has had negative experiences with this company, but I hope it is of help to others.

BW Legal breached a court order (my debt relief order) and sued me for a debt that was legally written off.

I suggest all consumers that have been harassed by this firm's unethical practices, report them to the SRA Report at sra.org.uk and the Financial Ombudsman "complaint.info at financial-ombudsman.org.uk as BW Legal is regulated by both.

I am unsure how the SRA has not intervened in this firm yet. They have illegally harassed via abuse of the court process and suing me for a debt that is void.

No letter of claim received before court action and I suspect they did not serve the claim form either as nothing was received apart from a default judgement.

So far they have ignored me so have posted this review in the hope they see it.

My request to resolve the complaint and further action is to cancel / set aside the CCJ as this has been done via abuse of process, hopefully inadvertently as they did not bother to check the free, public Insolvency Register before suing me.

A credit card company refused to pay them, was pending on my account for 7 days, and my bank won’t acknowledge direct debits to BWLegal.

Prior to Christmas, spoke to Liza who was very helpful with my situation.

They are scammers!!!! Run!!!
Go to gov.uk to check if they are a legitimate business. They are not!
They claimed that my son who is a vulnerable adult that has never paid a bill in his life is owing British Gas’s electricity and gas. When we lived at that address he never paid any bills how then did British Gas get his info and passed on to BW Legal? I contacted British Gas and they are not aware of this.

No one REPLIES!!!!!!!!!! They Just keep sending letters and letters whilst waiting for a response and I am a victim of domestic abuse had to flee my property!. All they want is your money!!!!!! Bullies, harassment for a debt I simply don't owe. I have even set up a payment plan to get them off my back, and thats still not good enough. I am long term sick suffering with CANCER but they don't care, phone calls, texts and threatening letters about taking me to court rather than going to the person that owes the money,.or accept what I can offer. They don't even have the right date of birth for me which should tell them ITS NOT MY DEBT, but no, they pursue anyone they think will pay, I'm just not strong enough to fight this, so with a threat of court proceedings AGAIN, I'll be forced to fight my case even though I'm so ill. Shame on them, but they simply don't care!!!! Harassing bullies that are going after the weakest society has to offer. Shame on them...I hope the Financial CONDUCT Authority sees this. I'd complain to them if I had the strength....

The company is chasing me on behalf of British Gas for energy supplied to my property prior to me moving in.

I provided all my evidence for this back in November and still to this day, have not heard anything from BW regarding this. Maybe they realized they had no claim but still leaving me in the dark for months is completely unfair and unprofessional.

Scammers. Fraudsters. Do not pay or deal with this company or anyone they claim they are associated with. They need to be caught and imprisoned for life

BW Legal’s handling of a court claim that was wrongly and unjustifiably brought against me.

I share a name and DOB with the accussed and thats all. But my address was used in court. I now have a CCJ and a record on my credit scores.

Reviewing all my credit repost shows that i had no association with the address linked to the debt.

BW Legal’s decision to pursue court proceedings in this matter constitutes unreasonable conduct and, in my view, an abuse of process. The claim lacked proper legal and factual basis and should have been identified as defective long before court action was initiated. Proceeding regardless demonstrates a serious failure to conduct adequate due diligence or to act in accordance with professional obligations.

I have been chased twice for the same debt and had cleared this up in 2023 but i was pursued again in 2024/5.

In addition, BW Legal’s conduct amounts to harassment. The initiation and pursuit of an unjustified court claim caused significant distress, anxiety, and disruption, particularly given that the matter should never have escalated beyond initial review. The misuse of legal proceedings as a pressure tactic is wholly inappropriate and contrary to the standards expected of a regulated legal firm.

This behaviour raises serious concerns regarding BW Legal’s compliance with the Solicitors Regulation Authority Principles, including but not limited to:

Acting with integrity

Acting in a way that upholds public trust and confidence in the legal profession

Ensuring that legal processes are not misused or pursued improperly

Avoiding conduct that causes unnecessary harm or distress

Being wrongly taken to court is not a trivial issue. It represents a misuse of the court system and an imbalance of power that places unjust pressure on individuals to respond to claims that should never have been issued. Such conduct undermines confidence in the legal profession and the proper administration of justice.

Absolutely disgraceful this company is working on behalf of sky tv.now I was a customer of sky since it began.never any problems paying my subscriptions on time. then i lost both parents within 7 months of each other just over one year ago. who I lived with and also my brother who is severely brain damaged after a car accident 26 years ago.my parents with me cared for him.now after my parents died me and my brother were evicted soon after because the property was rented by my parents who’s names were on the tenant agreement.we had no rights and ruthlessly the owners wanted us out so they could sell the property.obviously this was devastating and a very traumatic time for us I did communicate with sky explained our circumstances but to my surprise they unbelievably showed no compassion and said that I needed to pay to end my subscription.because of my parents illnesses I became unemployed to look after them and my brother on my own. but this made no difference. I’m also now suffering with severe depression and receiving counselling and medication to help with this. I’ve had suicidal thoughts because of everything I’ve been through.sky passed my account on to a legal company called BW Legal who knowing my circumstances and trouble’s been utterly disgusting in there behaviour. hounding me and harassing me constantly with emails texts and phone calls all for the sum of £512.98p sky say I owe them this sum which obviously I dispute because I informed them of my circumstances straight away and expected some compassion and understanding how wrong could I be.sky and BW Legal should be ashamed of themselves and certainly be investigated for their behaviour. hopefully they don’t have to go through what I’ve been through and still going through on a daily basis BW Legals constant harassment is tipping me over the edge something needs to be done with companies such as these and as for sky they are disgusting for their treatment of such a loyal customer for many years both sky and BW Legal hang your heads in shame
