Life Changing Experience
I went with my bestie of 38 years to experience a yoga retreat after we started our yoga journey together 16 years ago. There, we received the gift of Agie who was our yoga instructor for 6 days. And it was basically just the 3 of us. Personal attention stretching us in our own rhythm according to our potential. Very focused, our journey began in the shalah that was situated in the middle of the rice fields. Tranquility Every day, Agie was not just an astangi pro she also planned each day with outings and we had a driver who could conquer the Ubud traffic. Today, I am heading back with a full heart, a sad smile but ready to go back and process the unbelievable amazing 6 days we had. Thank you Agie for the great resort and hospitality. We created a Whatsapp group called Bali Babes where Agie guided us every minute of each day. Highly recommended and so much appreciated.

I booked the “2 Day: A Day of Healing, Clarity & Restoration” retreat through BookRetreats, and my experience revealed serious issues with transparency, pricing accuracy, and consumer protection on this platform.
The retreat was advertised as a 2‑day experience, but it was actually only one day. The listing implied that the hotel stay was part of the retreat package, and it featured a luxury equestrian hotel, but I was placed in a budget hotel at more than double the actual nightly rate. The host has no affiliation with the hotel, and this was never disclosed. As an out‑of‑town traveler, there was no way to know what hotel I was actually being booked into.
The invoice contained incorrect math, including tax added to a mandatory 25% gratuity. I didn’t catch the error until later, and it was deemed non‑refundable. I take responsibility for not reviewing the invoice more carefully — I booked this during a time when I desperately needed peace and relief from stress, and that made me less thorough than I normally would be. I was in a rush to relax, and I paid the price — financially and emotionally. But transparency should never depend on a guest catching hidden or unclear details.
Several listed elements — including a lavender steam — were not provided.
The retreat listing also failed to disclose the actual on‑site setup. Although the host described the retreat as “no frills,” she did not mention that the bathroom options were either a bathroom inside her motorhome or a tent with a pot placed outside a 6×6 shed aka "The Cottage." This is a crucial detail for any traveler.
When I contacted BookRetreats with documentation, including the hotel’s real rate and proof that the host was refunded by the hotel, they told me they were “bound” to the host’s non‑refundable policy and closed the case with no resolution.
My suggestion to anyone booking through this platform:
• Review your invoice carefully
• Double‑check the math
• Confirm the actual hotel and facilities
• Do your homework — Google the retreat, the host, and the accommodations
• If anything feels off or unclear, trust your instincts
BookRetreats is visually appealing, but when something goes wrong, they defer entirely to the host, leaving guests without meaningful protection.

We're so sorry your retreat left you feeling this way.
When a guest tells us a retreat didn't go as expected, we don't simply take one side's word for it and move on. We look into it properly, on both sides. For your case, that meant checking every charge against your invoice and the listing, and having a lengthy conversation with the host on your behalf.
Here's what that review found. The total you paid matched exactly what was invoiced before your retreat and what's published on the listing, so nothing was added or changed afterward. The host also went beyond what was required of her, adjusting the gratuity to apply only to the retreat portion and refunding it, along with a credit for the lavender steam that wasn't delivered.
On the hotel, she had already booked and paid for a room for you as part of your package. When you arrived, you chose not to use it and booked elsewhere instead. Her policy, agreed to at booking, states that charges are non-refundable, and when a guest agrees to terms like that in writing, that's the agreement we uphold, for hosts and guests alike. It's what keeps the system fair and predictable for everyone. We still advocated firmly for a goodwill exception here, as that's part of our role even when we can't require a host to agree, but she held to her policy.
The rate built into your package for that room reflects a standard rate the host applies across her bookings, rather than the exact cost of any one room, similar to how many travel packages price accommodation. The two-day structure and the option to book your own hotel were both stated on the listing, and the second was also raised directly in your conversations with the host.
We know this wasn't the outcome you were hoping for, but we want you to know that when something feels off, we look into it properly, every time. We're happy to talk further if you'd like.

Poor experience of Bookretreats
Bookretreats charged my transaction in Dollars, instead of British Pounds, without warning. It generated fees for me ! Unacceptable. They also send far too many marketing emails !
