Utterly Disappointing
I’ve had Type 1 diabetes for almost 48 years. I used a Freestyle Libre system around 5 years ago but couldn’t keep the disc in my arm and gave up on it. Last time I attended the diabetes clinic I was persuaded to try it again as they were now on prescription and the adhesive had changed. I waited just over a year to be put on the course (Covid’s fault). I finally received the equipment and ‘attended’ the webinar staffed by very competent and knowledgeable people. I could not wait to start again with the system. The first 3 days I was getting wildly differing readings between a) how I felt and b) between the scanner and my old trusty OneTouch meter. The scanner was giving me readings way below my meter, and ridiculously so. Scanner reading 2.9, with a horizontal arrow, meter reading 8.3. Scanner reading 5.4 with a 45 degree downward arrow, meter reading 19!! Yes, 19! And I blame the fact the scanner was reading 2.9 and I treated it like a bad hypo. These are just some of the wildly fluctuating readings with the scanner always way below what the meter readings were and how I was feeling. Now, in these days where DVLA want to know if you are aware of hypos the data being sent to your physician showing you are at 2.9 looks like you are not aware of hypos and are maybe not fit to drive which is my lifeline in my isolated community is extremely worrying. I called Abbot regarding the difference in readings hoping to speak to maybe someone with some knowledge on the matter ( like the people running the webinars) but got a sales person, who was very helpful but I wanted to discuss what was happening but she obviously had prescribed questions to ask. She said she would send a new disc, which duly arrived a few days later and control solution which arrived two days later that I couldn’t use as you need abbot blood test strips which I don’t use. By the time I’d received the new disc the one in my arm seemed to be more attuned to my meter readings so I didn’t insert the new one. Today I inserted a new disc in to my arm and waited five hours before checking my blood glucose with it just to give it time to settle in. The scanner showed a level of 3.6 with a horizontal arrow which I then checked on my meter as I was not feeling that. My meter reading was 7.7! I am aware that the scanner readings are 10 minutes or so behind the meter readings because of the difference between blood and interstitial fluid but these discrepancies are just ridiculous. Every time I scan my disc I have to check with a blood strip so what’s the point? These scanners are supposed to reduce the amount of times you have to jab your finger and I am very aware of the cost to the NHS ( whom I am forever thankful to) of both the Freestlye Libre system and the blood test strips but if I’m having to use both what is the point of the Freestyle Libre? On another matter, I was not aware, until I tried to download the app, that my Apple SE phone which I am perfectly happy with will now need to be upgraded to allow the app to download to send (false) information to my doctors. Is it worth spending hundreds of pounds on a new phone to send misleading (dangerous) information to people who can decide if you are fit to drive or not? All in all extremely disappointed with Freestyle Libre. As an aside I attended a nurse led diabetes clinic yesterday and said to the nurse that I was getting wildly fluctuating readings and she said she hadn’t heard that- I pointed out that if you read Trust Pilot there are plenty of reviews with the same complaint as me. So come on @FreeStyleDiabet what are you doing about this?
