We have been using Zitauto since 1989…

We have been using Zitauto since 1989 and the service and the quality of the cars have been first class.
We collected our seven seater car at the airport car park 2 as usual no waiting about car ready forms filled and on our way within ten minutes.
We travel a lot and this the easiest car hire company to deal with in Europe a big plus no hidden extras.

My preferred car rental service

After a friend's recommendation (and being scammed by Avis Faro), I started using this service from the Almancil branch for renting in Portugal and it's been great.
You can email the team your inquiry and they respond quickly with the car options available and the pricing. It was quick to sign out the car and easy return.
I will continue to use this service for future visits. thank you to the team for being reliable!

Hired cars from Zitauo a few times but…

Hired cars from Zitauo a few times but the last time was in 2022. Very unorganised when I came to take the car. All the paperwork was incorrect for the cars(I hired 2 cars for me and my father in law) and 1 of the cars was full of dents and scratches. I showed the guy the dents and scratches he said that’s fine nothing to do with you. I took photos. When I returned the car (1week) later it was a different rep. Again the wrong paperwork and the rep try to put blame on me for the scratches and dents. Luckily I had the photos on my phone.

But since then I’ve had numerous fines come through the post for totally different vehicles that I did not use for unpaid tolls. I have been arguing with Zitauto but they don’t seem to help at all. Be careful they may be very cheap but they are unprofessional and don’t seem very helpful afterwards

As a previous business customer

As a previous business customer, I always avoided A22 due to risk of belated charges.

Rented again Oct’23 and the vehicle came with toll-reader, which also included for airport car-park access/exit.

They ensured car dings/marks etc all recorded before I took it, Staff also gave clear instructions on usage, I ensured I retained payment documentation, All worked well !

Found them to be as good as ever👍

ZitAuto an excellent to deal with

I have been using ZitAuto for over 30 years and I am extremely pleased to say that I have always found them to be totally reliable and professional in their dealings with me. On the rare occasion I have experienced a problem with my hired vehicle Zit’s response was immediate and my problem solved.
Regarding the ridiculous demands I have received from EPC Plc,Zit have no input here other than forwarding my name and address to Vialivre as they have always told me since tolls were introduced that they would be doing. It is not their fault that Vialivre have obviously sold the names and addresses of all outstanding tolls to EPC Plc who are just looking at this as a fatted calf. I am dealing with them simply by paying only what the toll fee was plus Vialivre’s original admin charge which I am liable for.
In conclusion I again wish to make it quite clear that Zit have always made it clear that my details were being forwarded to Vialivre

Unfortunately after many years of…

Unfortunately after many years of supporting and recommending Zit, many of us sending reviews are incredibly disappointed with the response shown from the company.
My experience is exactly the same
Over the years numerous last day returns with no way of paying, under the belief that this was taken care of by the company.
Now, a number of EPC demands.
My question is how to go forward collectively?
Via Livre totally got this wrong. By law you should have had notifications without penalty. Not in any case has this happened.
Fro June this year the rental company will charge your credit card. So why not in all the years before.
Zit have been a great company but at the moment I don’t think they appreciate the stress that they have contributed to with their total lack of clarity in regards of these unpaid tolls.
It doesn’t help to see a standard, hand washing reply to many loyal customers.

This change has stipulated that all tolls are to be paid directly to the rental company, which requires a credit card for the corresponding payment. After 48 hours of the rental contract's end, Zitauto's new system automatically reads the toll passages during the rental period and conveniently charges the card, promptly providing a detailed invoice with toll passages.

In previous years we were not provided with an applicable agreement to equip our cars with the toll devices. After the law changed in June 2023, logical and feasible proposals were presented, so we acquired the toll devices and now our cars are equipped.

We appreciate the understanding and collaboration of all our customers as we adapt to legal updates while maintaining our commitment to offering the best possible service.

Dont rent with them

Dont rent with them! Vialive did not send me any bill for toll, but left this over to a criminal club EPC/PLC Pan European Collection. Instead of our normally 40 euro we got a bill from them 2 years later of 196 euros. My advice as a returning visitor (Also with own car)... Rent your car with Luzcar, they are the best and you pay toll on returning your car.

Passed incorrect details to debt collectors

Have been renting from Zitauto for years, but recently received a letter from EPC plc detailing a £60 fine from 2022... for a car I wasn't driving. The registration plate was completely different to the one I had hired, and contesting the charge by sending the rental agreement showing the ACTUAL registration of the car I was driving was immediately dismissed. To add insult to injury, family living in Portugal had actually paid the tolls for the vehicle I WAS driving!

Zitauto have clearly passed on my details incorrectly and haven't even responded to emails I've sent asking for clarification. We've generated a lot of business for them through word of mouth, but from this point forward we'll be ensuring everybody we know will be using Avis, Europcar, Hertz etc. instead.

After using Zitauto for the last 10 years I recommend them to all my friends, their services were excellent, IToo have received a penalty charge notice from Epc for 111.06 eur for tolls totaling 11.10 euros .The notice is more confusing as its for tolls that are more than 12 months old and some of the date's for the tolls I was not even in Portugal. I have contacted ZITAUTO who confirmed that I was not liable for some of the tolls ,but said they had to give my name by law. I am asking why did ZITAUTO not contact me to say there was tolls due before they sent my name. Needless to say they have lost a loyal customer.. I notice in your reply that you did not mention that you gave Via Livre the wrong date's for my Car hire, are you under no obligation to do that either?

Do NOT use this car hire company .. we got to Faro airport at night and my husband took ages to find the ‘office’ which turned out to be the boot of a car ! In the meantime I was robbed while guarding the luggage and lost my handbag with all our valuables , there is no transponder in the car so you have to pay tolls at the post office but when we handed the car back on a Sunday my husband asked staff how to pay as the post office is closed and he was given no answer ! A year later we have a £51 bill for a £6 toll and the company have given us no gesture of goodwill ! Appalling .. do not use these cowboys you have been warned !!

Recently, we were informed that Via Livre has contracted a debt collection company (EPC) to manage and collect outstanding toll charges. We acknowledge that there have been issues concerning the amounts demanded by this company, which, according to reports, seem to significantly exceed the actual toll values.

It is essential to clarify that we have no direct control over the toll collection policies of Via Livre or the collection agency they have engaged.

With the enactment of the new law on January 8, 2023, car rental companies were mandated to adopt automatic payment devices in their vehicles. This change has stipulated that all tolls are to be paid directly to the rental company, which requires a credit card for the corresponding payment. After 48 hours of the rental contract's end, Zitauto's new system automatically reads the toll passages during the rental period and conveniently charges the card, promptly providing a detailed invoice with toll passages.

We will continue to ensure that our customers receive quality service, now enhanced by the convenience and transparency offered by this new automatic payment system.

Lost my support with the toll fiasco

Zitauto's handling of the current toll situation is appalling. They've been renting out cars long enough to know that at least the return journey to the airport is an issue as it's totally impossible to pay the tolls. They can only be paid at a Portuguese post office 48 hours after going through the toll station. Now there's floods of customers receiving payment demands from a debt collector with ludicrous admin fees added. These demands are going back 5+ years and in some cases hundreds of Euros. Their dismissive attitude as can be seen from some of the replies to reviews is very poor and not a good way to treat loyal customers. They take credit card details for fuel or damage so why couldn't these tolls be charged that way rather than letting them accumulate? Plus their rental prices aren't as competitive as they once were and I'd encourage anyone to shop around before ordering from Zitauto.

Used zit auto loads and always good

Used zit auto loads and always good. We are now being sent legal letters from an English company EPC plc regarding unpaid tolls going back to 2018. Not just me lots of my friends. A 9.24 euro toll EPC plc want £40. Zit need to look into this.

Toll Fees

Following using Zitauto for in excess of 10 years, I have during the last 3 months received Penalty Charge Notices from EPC plc amounting to £450.
Toll Charges £71 the rest is Admin Fees (Portuguese Law No 25/2006), and Administration costs.
These date back to 2018 some 5 YEARS AGO. I think that the charges are now up to date, why its taken this amount of time to sort out is beyond me.
Had Zitautos made this toll charge readily available I would of course paid it at the time.
The service provided by Zitautos is generally faultless regarding the delivery and return of the cars etc.
I will not be using them in the future unless the vehicles have been fitted with transponders, and Zitautos somehow recover the journey back down the A22 and pay the toll fee.
