I rented a car for 13 days from Sicilybycar Malta. I changed the first car the next day because the air conditioning was not working. The second car broke down in one day and 30 km, the gears did not work. I had to pay for the tow truck even though it wasn't my fault. Finally with the third car we were able to stay the rest of the days. Three cars for thirteen days. They rent you a car in very bad condition and when it breaks down, they charge you for the damage and the tow truck even if it is not your fault. I have been renting cars for over 20 years on my trips around the world and this has been my worst experience. At the office I saw more clients with problems. Run away from this company. SCAM!!!!

Pessimo. L'auto (con portello del portabagagli e aria condizionata rotti, oltre ad altri numerosi problemi) ci è stata consegnata con la batteria scarica: dopo un tragitto di 20 minuti, dal punto di ritiro alla destinazione, l'auto è stata parcheggiata per 2 ore, dopodiché non è più ripartita. Gli uffici non hanno risposto al telefono sino a quando hanno chiuso. L'unica soluzione per non rimanere a piedi è stata chiamare l'assistenza stradale (aspettata un'ora), che abbiamo dovuto pagare noi, così raddoppiando il costo del noleggio (nonostante la "full insurance"). Spiegato l'accaduto, ci hanno invitato a presentare reclamo via mail, perché gli uffici operativi non potevano, a loro dire, farci nulla (il giorno dopo, per telefono, ci hanno addirittura detto che avremmo dovuto riportare l'auto in aeroporto (sic!) anziché chiamare l'assistenza stradale). Il reclamo è rimasto ovviamente senza esito. Una stella solo perché non si può non metterne nessuna.

Utterly disgraceful car hire company. When we arrived we should have turned away as we saw a bewildered customer being forced to pay for a scratch on his hire car with police in tow, called by sicily by car.
The staff were rude and ignorant we should have been another warning to us. We got shown our car which was a battered wreck with no air con, we therefore refused and was offered another car which was equally as bad, by the time the third car was offered ( and the kids were tired and whining) we took it which was a huge mistake. It was a lesser car than we had paid for which sicily by car refused to reimburse us for and they wanted £1000 as a deposit, the actual car was no where near worth that, I don't think we have ever driven such a bucket of crap ever, the air con barely worked, we realised there was a window wiper missing and by the next day the car broke down. Sicily came out and said it was our fault it broke down as we were in the wrong gear! And if we called them again they would charge us !! This is despite a sign on the dash saying "engine faults and them having to charge the battery which was dead. Unfortunately it did break down a number of times over the next day and we had no choice but to hire a proper car from a local family run car hire company. I have never come across such a terrible company and I would guess that the cars are not even legally road worthy. When we dropped it back to them and told them of all the problems they did not care at all and got it ready to go out for the next poor victims. I really wish I had read the reviews it caused us a lot of stress and unnecessary time and money.

Quick efficient service.Car had obviously had an accident before I got it but worked fine.Inspected before and after use with staff,photos taken.

When renting a vehicle, the company writes down the security code from the card, which is not allowed, you sign the contract on a tablet without seeing its content, the employee does not provide any explanations, and at the end they charge additional fees for fines that we do not know have been issued. They charged EUR 140 from our credit card without our knowledge.
The car we received had torn tires, it was difficult to change gears and was generally in poor condition. I don't recommend it, it's better to look elsewhere.

I was forced to rent a car from Sicily by Car in Malta due to a personal error.

The car was clearly a reconstructed write off, every panel had paint overspray and not a single panel lined up.

The worst part was that I was rushed through the process, the paperwork was shoddy and then 10 days after leaving Malta they debited my credit card with 75 Euro, as a maintenance charge. The car was returned in identical condition!

Disastrous Rental Experience with Sicily by Car

I recently rented a vehicle from Sicily by Car, and the experience was nothing short of disappointing. First and foremost, the tires on the car were clearly not fit for safe use, as they were old and dated back to 2017, they had cuts and no thread left. This raised serious concerns about the vehicle's safety on the road, the brakes would lock the tyres and car would slide on the road.
Also the rear right turn signal was not functioning putting other traffic participants and myself into real danger when turning right.

Additionally, the ABS (anti-lock braking system) was not functioning properly, posing a significant risk to both myself and other drivers on the road. Driving without proper ABS is incredibly dangerous, especially on unfamiliar roads.

To add insult to injury, the car was not properly maintained or cleaned. There was no washing liquid available, making it impossible to clean the windshield for optimal visibility. Moreover, the vehicle was covered in scratches and damages all around, indicating a lack of care and maintenance by the rental company.

Overall, my experience with Sicily by Car was extremely disappointing and I would caution anyone considering renting from them to look elsewhere for a safer and more reliable option.

Absolute crooks. Don’t touch them. They’re cheap for a reason. Firstly, it was a preauthorised amount in my card, they actually charged my card the whole amount. The car looked like it had been in a demolition derby when I collected it. I took lots of photos but still had to go over the guys checklist as he’d ‘missed’ some of the damage. I also took videos. That was only the beginning. On the way to the hotel I noticed the engine management light, the tyre pressure light and anti braking system light were all on. Again I took photos. Did a google search, seemed to be a common fault with the car and likely a sensor issue. To be in the safe side, I took it to a local garage and checked the tyre pressures. Two tyres were horrifically overinflated (54 and 67 psi) putting us at a massive risk of a blow out. According to the garage, they see many cars from this company with the same issue and then they charge €150 per tyre to fix it. Had those corrected and pootled off for the day. However next day, flat tyre. Attempted to change the tyre, wheel brace in the boot, broken. Tried calling the office (over 20calls) no answer. Had to call a breakdown service to come change the wheel over. Took the broken one to the garage, turned out it wasn’t a puncture but a badly damaged rim. Hence why the tyre had been over inflated. As soon as the correct pressure was put in, it started leaking. So I had to pay to get the spare fixed. At this point I’d had enough and took the car back to them, where they started getting rude about how I should’ve called them (I showed them the call list) etc, etc. tried to give me another car but I refused. I did manage to get them to sign my paperwork to say the car was returned ok with no new damage but then told it would take 10 working days for a refund. I shouldn’t have been charged in the first place.

The only reason I am giving 1 star is because you cannot leave a 0 star review!! STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY AT ALL COSTS.
I am still waiting for my deposit refund 17 days after the car, if you can call it that, was returned. I have an email stating that the refund was due to be returned to me 1 week ago. They have stopped responding to my emails and am no further forward. Aside from this, the car was disgraceful. The dash was lit up like a Christmas Tree and the tyres would have done well on a Formula 1 car as racing slicks. There was absolutely no tread on 3 out of the 4 tyres. Please pay a little extra and go to a reputable company. Thanks for reading

Scam. Destroyed my vacation.

I just had the worst eperience this weekend. They are the worst I have encountered!

I was given the wrong car type, filled scratches and dents everywhere and only half tank gas (scam). It takes an hr to inspect, if you miss something they make you pay for it! Tyre pressure sensors were not working, engine repair fault was on and this is true for all cars they have! We had to get our car replaced as the hand brake was not effective on a slope and then we inspected 3 more cars before we finalised one. Overall a very bad experience.

Next time i'm not using a local supplier!

I never got the car. Sicily by car did not accept my card. Sixt accepted it but did not have any cars. Eurocar accepted it and had cars so I rented there. I can se that you with small have written that it has to be a kredit Card, but my Debits works everywhere else. Why did you accept the pre-payment when that also was a wrong card???? You should have stopped that transaction. Which is not acceptable.

Pros: Amazingly cheap car hire. No issues upon return of car and no scams with charges for ficticious damage to bodywork (staff will check the car over upon return). Got the car I had reserved. Body work and tyres of car not bad considering hire price. Helpful and polite staff operating under demanding workload.

Cons: 1 hour 35 minutes in queue of dozen people upon pick up at Malta airport - could do with extra counter staff and larger pool of available cars. Car was perfectly drivable but had some technical issues e.g. top of gear stick had plastic section missing so was sharp to touch, suspension knocking, rear passenger door had been bent so didn't quite seal creating wind noise, rear windscreen wiper and parcel shelf missing, clutch juddering a bit, fuel indicator level suspect - didn't seem to want to move back up after 15 euro refuel and drive to airport which was stressful as car needed to be returned with same level of fuel (fuel level was accepted upon return).

Watch out Sundays - Malta petrol stations shut and unmanned, so individual pumps need to be prepaid by credit card at a master payment point nearby.

14 Oct 2023 - Total chaos! 45 mins to get served, told there was no car after we booked and paid in advance, huge line of people all with no cars. Told to get into a mini bus where people would be dropped to their hotels. Our drop off would have taken around 2 hours. They refused to pay for taxis.

Update from 15 Oct 2023 - I went back to the Malta Airport office at 8am. They refused to give me my money back, were really rude and aggressive.

Never ever ever use this company if you:

1. want a relaxing start to your holiday.
2. do not want to be verbally abused.
3. do not want to be scammed.

Les prix, le process de location, l'accueil sont bons.
La voiture louée, son état n'était pas terrible !
Un pneu neige monté à l'avant, ( interdit d'avoir 2 pneus différents sur un même essieu et pneu neige à Malte ? ), les 4 pneus sous gonflés, intérieur sale, taches sur les sièges, des pets et rayures innombrables sur la carrosserie, les jantes, difficile de tous les dénombrer tous lors du check ( au moins pas de soucis lors du retour tellement il y en avait ) ! en circulant dans les iles nous avons vu d'autres clients qui avaient des voitures plus pimpantes, nous avons eu sans doute la voiture la plus moche du parc.

We have just returned home from Sicily, and all our worries about renting a car with SicilyByCar, which we could read others had experienced, turned out to be completely unnecessary. The operation/service was friendly and good both at pick-up and at delivery. There were no problems whatsoever. We will use this company again the next time we go to Sicily.

The rear logo was not properly glued on the rental Fiat 500 and was lost without any fault or any accident on my part. Of course, those "small" rental car companies are milking the cow as soon as they see an opportunity, no matter what you state. Add Sicily by Car to the list. Never again !

Havde købt fuld forsikring via Ryanair. Det var okay, men da de ville have det depositum på EUR 1.000 kunne det kun ske via kreditkort ikke VISA debit. Kunne heller ikke få lov til at bruge mit Master kreditkort på telefonen. Kom til at betale den dyreste forsikring alle 7 dage, der var dyrere end både bilens lejepris og den fulde forsikring. De vidste det tydeligvis og andre havde samme problem.

Desuden en virkelig dårlig bil med defekte hjullejer og motor-, dæk- og bremseadvarselslamper der lyste 😳

The company is a joke in how they handle everything. They say in small print that you need to have a credit card to rent a car. I’ve rented tons of cars during my trips and that has never been an issue to other companies, but they do send you the details and hide somewhere deep inside that THEY need a credit card…
But they don’t, it’s just that if you have a debit card, they can still take it, but you HAVE to take max insurance package, which is 40+ euros per day extra so that if you damage the car (the car we got then had so many damages, it looked like it came from a destruction derby car race anyways). It’s a joke when companies fine you for small scratches, bet never bother to fix the cars, just cash in on accidents.
The next part is when you provide the debit card and they don’t freeze, but actually charge the deposit from you, which is extra 500 euros on top of your full package insurgence payment. So for a car that was supposed to cost me 200 euros, I got charged 300 extra for insure and 500 extra as a deposit… why do you need to charge a deposit when you already forced me to get the maximum insurance…
Additionally then you “sign” 6-7 documents about the terms and conditions… but you never see those documents when signing, you just use the digital pen to sign on the device 6-7 times, when I asked what am I signing, they said that I will get the documents in my mail… so first you have to “sign” all the documents, and then later they come to your email and you can actually read what you signed and there are all the fees, fines, costs and other things that you have automatically “agreed” to without even knowing. I know that this could be easily disputed in court, if somebody would have the time and wish to sue them, as you are literally force to sing “air” and then the documents come to your email.
Finally when you return the car, they need to transfer you the deposit back in 7 days… instead you wait for it for a month, nothing happens, just that they are impossible to contact, they don’t answer mails, their phone “operator” are never operating and the phone drops after you spend 10 minutes waiting for somebody picks up…
So this companies strategy is to offer you cheap cars, then when you are in the airport trying to get the car, you get all the issues, but you don’t want to waste your holidays fighting to you just pay and get a smashed car they give you.
