My experience with SERE Motors Belfast – proceed with caution

I rarely leave negative reviews, but after everything my family has experienced, I feel other consumers deserve to know what happened.
In March 2024, my husband and I purchased a Hyundai from SERE Motors Belfast. At the time of sale, we were informed that the vehicle had undergone a multipoint inspection, was of satisfactory quality, and had approximately two years of Hyundai warranty remaining. We were provided with warranty documentation and purchased the vehicle on that basis.

After a short 2 years, n May 2026, when the vehicle was approximately five years old and had around 50,000 miles on it, it began developing significant mechanical issues. What initially appeared to be one fault escalated into a series of serious engine-related problems.

After investigations by an independent mechanic and subsequently Hyundai, we discovered that the vehicle was subject to a Hyundai service campaign relating to a tensioner sprocket issue. Hyundai later confirmed to me in writing that this service campaign had been active since May 2023 and that my vehicle had been included in the campaign from the date it was launched.

Hyundai also advised that the vehicle was showing major engine-related faults connected to this issue and that we were fortunate to have stopped driving it when we did.

The most disappointing aspect of this experience was not the mechanical fault itself. Vehicles can develop problems. What I found unacceptable was the complete lack of meaningful engagement from SERE Motors once these concerns were raised.

Despite multiple attempts to resolve matters directly, including a formal complaint to the directors, a Letter Before Action, a follow-up letter containing additional evidence, and a final Letter Before Action, I received no substantive response.

During this period I was heavily pregnant, without access to my own vehicle, trying to manage work commitments, hospital appointments, childcare responsibilities and day-to-day family life. Despite explaining the circumstances, I was offered no practical assistance and no courtesy vehicle.

The only reason this situation has ultimately been resolved is because Hyundai agreed, as a goodwill gesture, to cover the full cost of repairs. Had Hyundai not stepped in, my family would have faced a very significant financial burden.

I appreciate Hyundai's assistance and willingness to help. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same about my experience with SERE Motors.
Every customer will form their own view, but based on my experience, I would strongly encourage anyone considering purchasing a vehicle from this dealership to carry out their own independent checks, verify warranty status directly with the manufacturer, and ensure they are completely satisfied with the vehicle's history before proceeding.

I spent months trying to obtain answers and support from the company. The silence (and implied lack of customer care) was ultimately more disappointing than the fault itself.

Joanne is always a pleasure to deal with. This is now my third car I have taken out with Joanne at SERE. She has watched my daughter grow and it was so lovely to deal with her again. She made the whole experience a breeze and not stressful at all keeping my worries at bay. Thank you again Joanne
