Very Disappointing Experience and an Unfair Complaints Process
This was my first experience using House Sitters UK, and unfortunately it has left me extremely disappointed with both the sitters involved and the way my complaint was handled by the company.
My advert clearly stated that applicants must be able to drive, must not bring pets, and would be caring for a large teenage Staffy puppy who was still in training, alongside my elderly cats. Despite this, the sitters arrived with two dogs that had not been disclosed to me in advance. Had I known this, I would not have agreed to the sit.
The sitters later claimed that I agreed to them bring their dogs and that my puppy was not house-trained because he had defecated on his training mats. As any puppy owner knows, training mats are specifically designed to help young dogs learn toilet training. My puppy consistently used his mats, never defecated elsewhere in the home, and has never chewed furniture or caused damage within the property. To me, using his training mats was evidence that his training was progressing as expected, not evidence that he was unmanageable.
The sitters also made allegations that my property was unhygienic and dirty. Unfortunately, I failed to take photographs of my home immediately before leaving, which I now regret. However, based on the condition in which matters unfolded, I strongly believe that the unclean conditions they complained about were either exaggerated or developed during their stay. I am concerned that these allegations may have been used to justify leaving the sit early and moving on to another assignment.
However, I was never provided with the full photographic evidence submitted to support these claims. The only photograph I was shown was taken at approximately 1.30pm and showed my puppy having used his training mats. Given the timing of the photograph, it appeared to me that my puppy may not have been taken out for his normal morning toilet routine. The reflection visible in the door also appeared to suggest that the husband had only recently got out of bed.
I became increasingly concerned about the level of care being provided to my animals. The sitters gave notice and left the assignment early, leaving me to arrange emergency care. Following their departure, both my dog and cats appeared distressed. My friend, who took over caring for my pets, was shocked by my puppy's behaviour and anxiety. She is highly experienced in animal welfare and works as a foster carer for a major animal charity. Based on her observations and my own experience, I firmly believe my puppy was left significantly stressed by the situation.
In my opinion, these sitters were not suited to handling a large, energetic teenage Staffy puppy. I was concerned by what I perceived as a lack of patience and inappropriate handling of a young dog who required understanding, consistency and positive training.
What disappointed me most was House Sitters UK's complaints process. Despite being a new member using the platform for the first time, I was informed that my account had been removed from the website while the sitters, who had reportedly been with the platform for around 12 years, were effectively favoured in the outcome. The decision was made without me being given access to all of the evidence that had allegedly been submitted against me, preventing me from fully responding to the allegations.
I was also concerned that an open file was maintained on the sitters' profile and feedback remained available, while I felt my own concerns were not properly investigated or given equal consideration. The entire process lacked transparency and left me feeling that there was little protection for homeowners when disputes arise.
My advice to anyone considering using this platform, especially first-time users, is to proceed with caution. Make sure every detail is documented, keep written records of all communications, take lots of photographs of your home before you leave and before the sitters arrive, this is something I failed to do, and be aware that if a dispute arises, you may not feel that your concerns are given equal weight.
Based on my experience, I found the complaints process unfair, lacking transparency, and weighted in favour of long-standing sitters rather than providing a balanced assessment of the facts. I would not use House Sitters UK again, and I would urge prospective members to carefully consider whether this is a risk they are willing to take

Ive had two consecutive sitters who have left me feeling upset after my holidays. The Housesitters platform is run like they are staying at a hotel, giving scores out of ten for my home. My home is my five star home and to have some elderly sitters who judge it like they are on a mean TV programme is wrong. This is my home, I live in a holiday destination where houses are over 1.500£ a week to stay. Sitters are not interested in looking after the house or animals, they want a free holiday. All they had to do was look after a small dog who needs very little looking after. The latest sitters turned up in a swanky car with a daily mail under their arms and judged it from that standpoint. They have different tastes thats all. And then they went on about their home, it was obvious at that point that my home wasnt going to cut it. If I hadnt paid a lot of money for my well earned holiday I would have kicked them out then. So to judge my home from that is wrong, and to make me feel like my home is somehow substandard is wrong. Gratefulness? That they stayed in a beautiful home owned by an artist who spent 3 weeks cleaning and decorating for them? No. Ill never use this site as long as they have this intrusive system.

I was apprehensive about leaving my dog and home, I have had 3 house sitters from the website and each one has been kind, really nice trustworthy people. Each sitter has been efficient looked after my home like it was their own. I feel it was a privilege to meet these strangers who leave as friends.

Rolled the dice with these guys after Trusted House Sitters had shot their prices up while the service had gone in the other direction. That's private equity for you. Long story short, they are every bit as good or better, and at a fraction of the price. Always an element of risk with these platforms but the problems we've had were small and rare.

I had a lot of interest from my ad for a house sitter, but there is nothing to prevent a sitter not turning up, or leaving before the end of the sit. I contacted House Sitters UK to ask about this but they did not reply. It's a huge risk to turn your house over to a stranger. The one-star reviews here, reflect this.

The house sitters platform has connected us to amazing families around the UK. The website is easy to use and the search functions mostly works well. We have had mini-adventures in the most beautiful locations plus have had the joy of caring for wonderful pets. We have thoroughly enjoyed getting to meet people plus discover local cuisine and independent shops. Would highly recommend to responsible empty nesters, retired adults, or those who work remotely.

I found the most wonderful housesitter through this company. I'd been using TrustedHouseSitters for several years and had some good sitters but also applicants who let us down. House Sitters UK are easy to use and don't charge owners anything, unlike THS which is very expensive

We’re now had 4 different Housesitters look after our home and pets while we’ve been away on holiday, all have been positive experiences. The sitters usually have great stories which have inspired us perhaps in our retirement we could also see more of the country doing the same.

Such a simple idea that really works! We’ve arranged 12 house sits via House Sitters UK and have been very happy with the service. We’ve met some wonderful sitters over the years and have always felt confident that our house and pets were in good hands. The templates and prompts provided help to keep track of preparing for each visit and make sure that our sitters have all the information they need. The rating system allows us and our sitters to give an honest appraisal of our experiences. In turn this gives all parties reassurance that we are choosing the right people to sit for us. It’s the perfect solution that allows us to leave home confident that everything is taken care of.

We had never left our home in the care of someone other than family in the past so for us this was an undertaking that we were nervous of. Having advertised our property on the website we received around 22 enquires of which we Teams met with around 10 and then reduced that to a final three. We selected in the end a lady who was a retired GP ( which gave us confidence ) and whose interests seem very allied with our own. We invited her to stay the night before our departure and remained in contact throughout our three week holiday. Frankly it was a great success for us . I would simply advise a thorough interviewing process beforehand .

I have been a member of House Sitters UK for over 10 years. I find them to be easy to use and helpful with any queries. Many other sites focus on digital nomads and young people where there is no contact with the home owners before you arrive. House Sitters UK is aimed at everyone and encourages contact which ensures both parties have a good understanding of the sitter and the sit. I much prefer this site to others

I‘ve been using Housesitters UK as a house sitter in the summer holidays for several years now and I have only good things to say about the service.
I had lovely pets and houses to look after and enjoy at the same time.
Good communication with owners is essential and always worked well.
I like that it is quite staightforward and simple to use and that it is a win-win program for sitters and houseowners that works on the base of trust in each other and without the exchange of money.
The staff are very quick to respond, friendly and helpfull too.

The sitter walked out and customer service although nice are totally ineffectual. I had to travel back 3 days into a 2.5 week holiday to sort out. I’ve made arrangements and will get back to continue my holiday massively out of pocket and will never use this website again…. They don’t even have a real address and there’s no cover when things go bad
