We were sold an unroadworthy car by Hippo, having an illegal tyre repair in both rear tyres. This was only picked up a few months after purchase when we encountered a puncture. On contacting Hippo they have washed their hands of it and have tried to make us feel the guilty party. Their after sales and customer care beggars belief.

Thank you for your review. We are sorry to read your concerns and we appreciate why this would have been worrying, particularly given the journeys you have recently undertaken.
Following your complaint, we reviewed the pre-delivery inspection and workshop preparation records completed before the vehicle was supplied. These records showed that the tyres were inspected at the time and no concerns were recorded with the rear tyres. Where a tyre concern was identified during preparation, this was acted on before handover.
As the concern was raised several months after collection, and based on the evidence available to us, we were unable to confirm that the issue was present at the point the vehicle was supplied. We do appreciate that this is not the outcome you were hoping for, and we are sorry for the disappointment caused.
We have issued our Final Response and provided details of the next steps available should you wish to have the matter reviewed independently.

I don’t normally leave reviews, but I felt I had to in this case.
The one star is for the salesperson, Warner, who was helpful throughout the purchase. I test-drove the car, liked it, and paid cash for a Land Rover Evoque (registration KM71 JJE). I collected it on the Wednesday just before the bank holiday weekend.
On the Friday, I noticed a problem selecting first gear. When my husband came home, I asked him to drive it to make sure it wasn’t just me, but he experienced the same issue. It was clear the car had a fault.
I contacted Hippo on the Saturday and was told to get in touch with A1, their warranty provider. They instructed me to take the car to my local garage for a diagnostic report. My local garage diagnosed the car as needing a new clutch. Wanting a second opinion, I took it to another independent garage, who confirmed exactly the same issue. They advised that the car needed a new clutch and dual-mass flywheel at an estimated cost of £3,500.
This all happened just two days before my 14-day, no-quibble money-back guarantee expired. A1 then asked the garage to dismantle the vehicle and provide photographs before they would consider the claim. The garage charged me £78 for the diagnostic work, which I have never been reimbursed for, leaving me out of pocket. Garages are busy businesses, and it’s unreasonable to expect them to dismantle a vehicle immediately without charge.
At that point, I decided I had lost all confidence in the car and informed Hippo that I would be returning it under the 14-day guarantee. I returned the vehicle on day 14, but nobody could tell me when I would receive my refund. It then took another 14 days for my money to be returned, and when it finally arrived, they had tried to short-change me, which caused even more unnecessary stress.
To add insult to injury, the car was advertised back on their website for sale before I had even received my refund.
The reason it’s taken me so long to write this review is because I hoped, with time, I would calm down and perhaps see things differently. Unfortunately, I still feel exactly the same.
The sales process was excellent, but the after-sales service and the way this issue was handled were extremely disappointing. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend buying from Hippo.

Following the concerns you raised after collection, the matter was reviewed through the appropriate repair process before you chose to return the vehicle within the relevant return period. We appreciate this was not the outcome you had hoped for when purchasing the car.

I had to wait 3.5 weeks to get my deposit back
I left a deposit for a car. A few days later I was informed they could not sell it as it had mechanical issues. I said fine, please refund me. A few days later, I was told the refund had been processed. 9 days later, I haven’t received my refund so I had to call them. They said to fill in a complaint form and they will look into it and process refund. This then took another two weeks. All in all, 3.5 weeks to get my refund. They send you long emails explaining and trying to justify the delay. Stop all this nonsense and try to be professional. All this headache to get my money back as you couldn’t sell the car to me. Very disappointing and poor level of service if you want to call it service!

Not the best customer service
I visited this garage today to view a car I was potentially interested in purchasing, but unfortunately the experience left a lot to be desired, having driven an hour to get there to see the car.
As soon as I arrived, the focus seemed to be on my current vehicle rather than the car I had come to see. I was asked for my keys so they could assess my car before I had even been allowed to view the vehicle I was interested in.
I explained my budget and asked whether there was any flexibility on the figures. I was told there wasn’t, which is fair enough, but I was then effectively asked to confirm that I could make the finances work before I had even seen the car. I wasn’t asking for a test drive, just a chance to look around the vehicle so I could decide whether it was worth pursuing and potentially increasing my loan amount.
When I asked to see the car, I was told it would take 20–25 minutes to prepare, and there seemed to be little interest in showing it unless I could first commit to the numbers. I was also greeted with “Oh, we thought you weren’t coming until 3,” which immediately made me feel as though I was inconveniencing them. I even said to them I don’t mean to waste anyone time when the manager came over to discuss. I just felt like an inconvenience.
Overall, I felt pressured and unwelcome rather than valued as a potential customer. Buying a car is a significant financial commitment, and most people would reasonably expect to be able to view a vehicle before being asked to commit to funding it. As a result of the experience, I decided not to proceed and I did not see the car. I just wanted to leave.
