It'd be easier to list what DOESN'T suck about GS1?
Actually, I can't think of anything.
Their business is usury.
They sell very specific quantities of barcodes and if you grow, you're essentially starting from scratch, no way to expand under your existing company prefix.
Additional users are a $500 subscription ... for how long???? The website NEVER says.

Why are codes (which you have paid for the use of in your allotment) wasted and not retractable/deletable??? Oh, right so we HAVE to buy more "priceless" electronic digits that we have to pay for EVERY YEAR FOREVER.
CRAP COMPANY, CRAP PRODUCT, CRAP SUPPORT, and on and on and on and on and on and on
If ANY other company figures out how to do global barcodes even competently, GS1 will see an incredible exodus!

If you buy a 10 pack of bar codes and then need more down the road, you're stuck paying two yearly subscription fees because there is no method for upgrading the number of bar codes that you license from GS1. This is complete BS.

I was told to give up my 10 bar codes to move to a 100 or unlimited pack. The issue here is that Amazon, Walmart... won't let you change the bar code. So it is not possible to discontinue use to move to a larger subscription. This is not business friendly and I'm not at all happy with GS1 policies or support. It seems like this group is just in business to extort money. How could it cost $2500 a year (every year) to maintain a block of UPC codes.

NonprofitLight shows revenue of $71M. Total expense of $55M. Net assets of $196M. So this non-profit standards organization profited $16M in 2021. The CEO makes $2.1M. CFO $786K, SVPs $696/$572. SVP Human Resorces $493K. Me think that this outfit is about pocketing lots of money for the execs. It's not really a non-profit in any sense!

The lady was really passive/agressive.
She was speaking calmly with this exasperated tone on her voice at every questions that I was asking!

I'm a manufacturer and I know the jargon but she was acting like if I was not understanding anything.

I understood later on that she was the one with too little knowledge to help me correctly so she was trying to transfer the pressure on me.

Important the note that she was not a young individual. She sounds pretty retired for me.

So I'm disappointed to deal with this kind of tantrum

TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE! AFTER PAYING FOR THE BARCODES FOR ALMOST 3 YEARS, THEY REFUSE TO TRANSFER THE BARCODES TO ANOTHER COMPANY THAT WE OWN. THIS IS PURE NONSENSE AND WILL FILE A BBB COMPLAINT, JUST LIKE PREVIOUS REVIEWERS.

THEY ARE EXPENSIVE AND A TOTAL WASTE OF MONEY. STAY AWAY, THERE ARE OTHER OPTIONS AND COMPANIES THAT SELL BARCODES FOR A FRACTION OF THE COST.

Total rip-off, avoid UPC system altogether. This is not for small players. Big guys can buy hundreds of thousands for a fraction of the price - but once again, small business is left to hustle, hurry, and waste enormous amounts of time and money.

Don't lose your money, they will sell you used barcodes as new that doesn't work . very nasty customer service will never help you. Be aware, I already filed complaint with the BBB..

I just filed a complaint with BBB on GS1 US.
I am not sure if I will get my money back ($2500) but this is the email I got from them today.
It sounded threatening to me..
Background: Our company purchased UPC from GS1 website on 03/31/20 for urgent use, our credit card was charged and received an invoice right away. However, no UPC nor instruction was emailed to me until 04/24/20 after I filed a dispute with my credit card company on 04/22. I tried to contact them through email and their website and calls (no one answers) during the first couple weeks. I explained to them what happened to me and hope they could improve their service to others on 04/24. This is the email that I received today on 04/27.
Email from GS1 US:
"Thank you for contacting GS1 US.
I apologize you've this experience. Just as an FYI, a thought befor disputing, keep in mind many retailer and trading partners require your GTIN/UPC-A be issued by GS1. We do not offer refunds and I do not know how that will work with disputing to your credit card company. I just wanted to make sure you are aware if your account is Terminated or cancelled and it does turn out you do need have GS1 compliant barcodes you would be reapplying and paying the 2500.00 initial fee again.
If this is not a concern or you don't have any other questions no other response is needed.

Bad company.....Terrible refund policy for small businesses.
I used ONE GSIN number and discovered their products were unnecessary for Amazon. Too late. Too bad.

Absolutely terrible customer service

Have taken a account with for 3 years & now i want to cancel the subscription & they are asking all the barcodes back .SEE the note below
Once your account has been closed we will return all your assigned prefixes to us. As agreed when you became a GS1 UK member, it is important that you immediately stop using any of the GS1 identifiers and barcodes, since continuing to use them could lead to duplication problems for GS1 UK members.

De solgte mig nogle stregkoder med tilhørende abonnement. Da jeg i efteråret 2013 ikke skulle bruge mit abonnement mere, kunne jeg ikke opsige det for 2014, da tidsfristen var udløbet. Fastholdt min opsigelse for nu at få en ny regning med påstand om at abonnement ikke er opsagt.

Er du engang kommet i klørerne på dem kommer du aldrig fri. De tror ikke at stavnsbåndet er ophævet og mener at fordi de ikke svarer på henvendelser retfærdiggører det, at man skal bibeholde deres abonnement i årevis.

De vejledte mig til at købe stregkoder til bøger hos dem (GS1 Denmark), selvom man slet ikke kan benytte konventionelle stregkoder på bøger. Jeg kunne ikke få mine penge retur da jeg opdagede det, og jeg mistede tilmed en masse penge til videre udvikling af systemer mv. Jeg vil absolut IKKE anbefale GS1 til nogle - prøv at undgå dem!
