What made this experience great was the flexible nature of the meeting times as well as the knowledge and practical approach in explaining all the options available. Sharing what’s available outside of KiwiSaver was a great insight on investment options too. Overall a great service and very happy to switch to Generate.

Where do I even start? My wife has been unemployed for almost six months. She can’t get WINZ support because of my income, so she applied for a KiwiSaver hardship withdrawal. The paperwork was ridiculous—think War and Peace, but with more forms and fewer happy endings.

Her application was declined, not because she’d done anything wrong, but because I’m self-employed and keep a safety buffer in case my business takes a hit (have you seen the economy lately?). When I asked to escalate, I got a 30-minute lecture from a rep who spoke as if the funds were coming out of her personal wallet. Condescending, argumentative, and clearly out of her depth. The moment I asked about their complaints process, her tone flipped and she started putting words in my mouth. That’s not customer service—that’s gatekeeping.

If this is the standard, empathy isn’t optional here—it’s missing. Before you trust your KiwiSaver to a provider that treats people in genuine hardship like an inconvenience, think long and hard. One day you might need access to your money, and you’ll discover just how little they care.
