Exceptional Bikepacking Tyres – Race King 2.2 & Cross King 2.3 ‘Tullet’ Setup
★★★★★ Excellent Durability & Performance – Race King 2.2
I’ve been using Continental Race King 2.2 tyres for several seasons of bikepacking, and they’ve proven to be an excellent choice. They strike a great balance between low rolling resistance, grip, and durability, making them ideal for long-distance riding under heavy loads. The rolling feel is smooth and fast, and the sound they make on different surfaces is surprisingly satisfying!
Paired with Stan’s Race sealant, they’ve self-healed numerous punctures, keeping me rolling even in remote areas. That said, they did take a while to bed in—requiring regular sealant top-ups and pressure checks—and they often need a quick pump before a ride. However, once settled, they’ve been incredibly reliable and long-lasting, handling everything from gravel to hardpack trails with ease.
We’re now trying a Race King 2.2 (rear) / Cross King 2.3 (front) “tullet” setup to see how it compares. The idea is to keep the Race King’s efficiency in the rear while adding extra grip and control upfront with the Cross King. Initial impressions suggest the Cross King offers better cornering traction and confidence on loose terrain, but we’ll see how they perform over time and report back.
For anyone looking to minimise rolling resistance without sacrificing grip, durability, or control under big system weights and sometimes high pressures, the Race King 2.2 remains a strong, dependable choice. Highly recommended!
