I went into Age UK on London road in Brighton this morning, and it was such a pleasant experience!. The shop is looking so clean and well presented. I've noticed a difference lately. The displays are so creative and well thought out. The manager Joanna was really friendly and helpful. Ill look forward to visiting again soon!

Disappointed
Very disappointed with the helpline. I am a carer for my very elderly parent even though I am also of state pension age. Her landline and broadband connection had stopped working and I had spent hours trying to rectify this with little success. I rang the helpline expecting support and advice. Instead I was asked ‘ what exactly do you want Age UK to do’. I felt as if the advisor just wanted me off the phone and couldn’t understand my issue or frustration. I realise that Age UK do not fix telephone lines, however I have since found that you have a whole section on Consumer Advice and in particular ‘Changes to Landlines’. Instead of being directed to this, I was told to ring Citizens Advice.

Fantastic charity
I have had a lot of help from John in Salisbury branch of Age UK- he spent loads of time calling me to get details of my situation in applying for Care allowance for my husband. I found the application forms very confusing and needed help with filling everything in.
No one seemed to be very interested in helping, until Age Uk came on the scene.
Wonderful help all round , and happy to say that my husband has been granted the allowance

Handicare STAIRLIFT since paying my…
1300urs 13th July 26 Handicare telephoned me to state they do not remove the old hand rail from the wall and later sent me an email,Handicare have NOT SHOWED ME OR MY HOME ANY RESPECT,should I have received a stairlift to which I wanted it to be placed it would have cost me £6 thousand ,I later was told other customers had the same problem,I would not and will not recommend this company AgeUK do a lot to help us out,however I would kindly ask them to check there Handicare T&C as they change as they go along Customer to Customer,now this person says they cannot remove Wall Fittings due to Structure and Plaster,again No Respect they must know there dealing with DISABILITY PEOPLE, and think may be easy cash hereHandicare STAIRLIFT since paying my deposit I have had nothing but problems,4 phone calls explained everything regarding me before purchase some staff on phone very abrupt

Disappointing service
I contacted age u.k. on recommendation because the benefit cap reduced my universal credit by £34 per month.
They told me they would investigate and call me back on a specific day, this did not happen. I rang them only to be told there was no record of my name and details on their system.

Not insured for damage !
In Jan my 102 year old disabled Mum needed light bulbs changed by Age UK. During this a fitting was damaged by them. We had to fix this at our cost so complained. They offered us £30 which Mum accepted but 5 months later are still awaiting reimbursement. Be careful if you have work done. Seems as volunteers they are NOT insured !

Great customer service and real bargains to be found.
I often shop for preloved clothes in the charity shops along Wallace Parade. A favourite is the Age UK shop which always looks well stocked and inviting. My last visit was made a real success by the effort made by the shop assistant who went out of her way to offer her help in looking for items of the right size and description I had given her. I eventually left the shop very happy with the purchases the shop assistant (Ref. on receipt JoPa) had helped me find.

Better than nothing
I have used Age UK twice for domestic cleaning and three times for gardening help in the last couple of years on an "ad hoc" basis.
As they are a charity, I was surprised to be charged for an initial assessment, however the people I have dealt with have always been polite and reasonably helpful.
The garden helpers were not particularly ' green fingered ', were quite restricted in what they would do, and did not ' over exert ' themselves, but they helped a bit.
The domestic cleaners were both friendly and helpful but had limitations on what they would do.
On my most recent request for an 'ad hoc' domestic cleaning session, it was made clear to me that the £27 p.h. that I would be charged was for " light cleaning " only, and would not include what they class as "deep -cleaning" jobs such as cleaning skirting boards or getting into kitchen alcoves.
£27 p.h.for a domestic cleaner is probably not an unreasonable rate for a 'commercial profit making private company' , who I assume would not impose these restrictions, but it seems a bit excessive for a charity, who I assume are receiving other forms of support due to their status as a charity.
