As a previous WTT from 2015 coming back to WTT has been a goal after taking a big hit during covid.

I have been duped by the Which? Trusted Trader website, into employing someone with a glossy reputation and masses of good reviews. We had accepted the quote from their 'front' man, who arrived in a new van, plastered with the Which? logo and telling us how much experience he had in the industry. We have been members of Which? for over 40yrs and believed they had a moral compass. If they ever did I think this was in the past.

We had issues with birds under our roof tiles, so we needed a roofer. The quote was £5,000. This was expensive for the unskilled simple work of removing the first 3 rows of tiles, replacing the roof membrane, adding eves trays, and renewing the plastic bird guards all around the perimeter (all of these are cheap items to purchase). However it is a 2 storey house so we reasoned to ourselves that this high price would include scaffolding/towers for the workforce.

For 45 years we have always done our own diy work (my husband is an engineer so can turn his hand to most things), we do this just to avoid all the unskilled, reckless, cowboys out there in every trade. Old age and infirmity now forces us to have to run the gauntlet of employing these morons who are allowed to prosper in the UK. In parts of America if a 'contractor' is not up to scratch, and consumers have legitimate complaints about them, they are not given a licence/permit to work again in that state. Here in the UK governments see consumers as fair game, and these 'vetting' sites are the latest way to scam us.

The rogues who came to do the work at our home arrived in a decrepit dirty van with nearly flat tyres. They had no safety gear. They did not use any scaffolding or towers, just ladders (without proper roofing attachments) that they carelessly rested direct onto our guttering, leaving it to take the strain. They trampled expensive plants for no reason. They were clearly untrained, quite spiteful, and feckless.

They only stripped the first 2 rows of tiles (and in some places one), throwing them 2 storeys down onto the lawns below (luckily we had had days of rain so all but 2 survived unbroken), they only replaced the membrane 'where they thought it needed replacing'.

The (inappropriate, for double roman pantiles) bird guards were not properly fixed down, and the plastic 'fingers' on the guards were barely long enough to fill the gaps under the tiles. Within hours of them leaving the birds were just taking up residence again. We called them back, they came and said to me that they would check these areas, replace the membrane where the birds had pecked at it for the last 3 days and 'double up' on the bird guards. I went into the house and left my husband outside with them (they were aware he has terminal cancer, and is clearly unwell to look at) by the time they left having taken full advantage of his weakened state they reduced their 'remedy' to a bit of adhesive in 2 places to try and secure the guards to the tiles, and they called it a day.

By now we wanted them off the premises asap, we had pieced together that we were dealing with a certain protected community, and we did not want to be targeted by them for future damage or thefts.

Their invoice listed work not done, including cleaning out all the guttering (my husband had done this himself the day before).

I have not made any complaint to Which? Trusted Traders, for the same reason as above and from what I have read on here about the way Which? handle complaints we have made the right decision. Any action I choose to take in the future will be on a personal level.

Do not use any of these sites. I feel very sorry for legitimate skilled trades, but our governments work hard to keep cowboys in business. Maybe the answer is for consumers to all randomly pay with fake currency. This would level up the playing field and subject both parties to Russian roulette rather than just consumers.

I think the experience of joining was thourough (which would filter out the cowboys) and I’ve had lots of tips throughout the registration process.

The process of becoming a which trusted trader was quite straight forward, I was already doing most of the required work, which ment that I had to modify our processes and add a couple more poilcies. the whole process took probably about a month to cmplete.

We went through such a thorough vetting process to be awarded the Which? Trusted Trader status that I would always and only use WTTs in future if available.

FROM THE VERY FIRST DAY THAT THE MEN ARRIVED TO START WORK ON OUR BATHROOM THESE MEN HAVE CARRIED OUT THERE WORK 100PERCENT THE THREE DAYS THEY WERE AT MY HOME THEY CARRIED OUT THE WORK EXCENTLY THEY LEFT NO MESS AT THE END OF EACH DAY EVERY THING WAS CLEARED UP AND RUBBISH TAKEN AWAY THE PEOPLE WERE VERY POLITE AND HELPFUL WE WERE ABSOLUTLY AMAZED HOW THEY HAD REFUBISHED OUR BATHROOM AND WOULD RECOMMEND THIS COMPANY TO ANYONE A VERY WELL DONE AND A BIG THANKYOU TO THOSE TWO MEN WHO WERE VERY POLITE AND HELPFUL THANKYOY
