I rented a car from Top Rent A Car at Varna Airport from Friday evening, 11 September 2026, until Sunday, 13 September 2026. I deliberately booked the paid airport service and Premium Protection because the whole point of this short trip was to save time.

Unfortunately, the rental became a six-hour breakdown incident.

The vehicle suddenly refused to start. It still had electrical power, the automatic transmission was correctly set to P, but nothing happened when trying to start it. The vehicle also displayed an overdue service warning. I recorded video evidence of both.

Roadside assistance suspected a starter motor or control-unit problem. Nevertheless, despite Premium Protection being advertised with “Free roadside assistance”, I was initially told that I had to pay approximately EUR 150 in cash for towing and might receive the money back later if the workshop determined that I had not caused the defect.

I refused to accept liability for the towing costs. Interestingly, the towing invoice itself was addressed to Modul EOOD, the company behind Top Rent A Car, not to me.

After several hours and escalation at the airport office, the towing issue was eventually resolved and I received a replacement vehicle.

The return of the replacement vehicle was then another unpleasant surprise.

I had specifically paid for airport service because I wanted a quick and convenient pickup and return at Varna Airport. At the time of return, however, no practical airport return service was available. There was no agent available to handle the return and no suitable return parking space. The process took more than an hour and I ultimately had to leave the vehicle outside the normal return area and organise my onward transportation.

I complained to Top Rent A Car afterwards.

Their written response is what ultimately convinced me never to use the company again. They explained that, in their view, payment of the airport service fee does not necessarily guarantee that an employee will be present at the desk or that a parking space will be immediately available for returning the vehicle.

In other words, I paid specifically for an airport service because I wanted a reliable airport pickup and return – and the company’s position after the event is that the paid service does not necessarily guarantee the practical elements required to actually return the vehicle at the airport.

Had this interpretation been made clear before booking, I would simply have rented from Sixt, Europcar or another provider actually operating directly at the airport.

To be fair, I want to distinguish very clearly between the company and the individual employee who eventually assisted me at the airport office. He was excellent. He remained at work for several additional hours, handled a difficult and escalating situation professionally, protected me from an unnecessary confrontation with the towing company and eventually found a practical solution.

My criticism is therefore directed at Top Rent A Car’s processes, the way its additional services are sold and subsequently interpreted, and the handling of the breakdown – not at that employee.

For me personally, Top Rent A Car has earned a permanent place on my NO-USE list.

Booked through booking.com, process was very easy!

Collecting the car was more difficult, no offices in Sofia airport were open and we weren’t aware we needed to get a shuttle to their office away from the airport to collect the car. Luckily a police officer at the second terminal was very helpful and directed us to the pick up point. The driver who collected us was lovely but once we got to the office it took a very long time to finally get the car.
One thing if you book through booking.com the insurance you get may not be through Top, they don’t take kindly to this and we spent a good 5 minutes explaining that we were insured and didn’t want their extra insurance.

Returning the car was much easier, although some staff members were verbally accosting other people returning their cars about them not being clean so I think we were lucky with who we got on return.

Unsure if I’d use Top again, the price is fairly good and the vehicle was great but it seems like a 50/50 on whether you’ll have a good time with them or not

We used this rental company two times already. Both times we experienced excellent service. Will use this company again!

Everything perfectly as usual

First time renting from this company. I rented a small car, automatic, Opel Corsa through a broker called Zest car rental with full insurance and in the beginning I was a bit confused as why do I still have to pay the deposit but shortly I understood that if anything happens, the broker's insurance will reimburse the amount charged by Top rent a car. I arrived a bit earlier at the airport but they said it's ok come with the shuttle. At the office it was simple as I've done the chech in online prior to landing so the pictures of my driving licence and passport together with other details were already in their system. The car was mechanically ok, working brakes, good tyres, etc, Aircon was working, on the exterior there was quite a few small scratches and dents but I wasn't bothered by that. I took plenty of pictures of the exterior and interior. When returning the car I washed the car beforehand and the return was nice and easy and Kristiyan Bonev checked the car and refunded the deposit. Thank you

Staff, loyality

Гумите на автомобила бяха в покъртително състояние, почти без никакъв грайфер и имаше накъсвания по тях. Момчетата в офиса са уведомени, надявам се да се вземат нови гуми и да се сменят.

Хорошая компания. Быстро можно получить машину. Вежлевый персонал. Все очень понравилось, не первый раз пользуюсь их услугами.

Получение автомобиля немного ранее запланированного времени - без проблем. Автомобиль соответствовал ожиданиям. Расход бензина - вполне приемлемый. Всё отлично. Рекомендую эту компанию для других туристов.
