Lloyd Jackson

An excellent driving school
I had a long experience with SmartLearner, and it was positive the whole way down.
Initially I was learning manual, I had 2 instructors, one of whom I swapped off from due to scheduling issues. The office was really quick to sort that out and I had a new instructor in a week. I learned Manual with Lloyd for a while. He was brilliant, gave clear instructions and demonstrations. Calm and really helped me with observations. Through no fault of his I decided to swap to automatic due to personal issues I was having with manual cars. Again the office was brilliant at getting me a new instructor quickly. I would recommend Lloyd to anyone wanting to learn manual.
Finally brings me to Aftab who instructed me in automatic. He is brilliant, was able to bring up my confidence in general driving and manoeuvres. I passed my test first time with him with 3 minors. Really chill guy, very helpful, and reliable.
Overall SmartLearner is excellent, and I would recommend them to anyone wanting to learn to drive.

WOW 🤩 if I could rate anymore than I could I really would. Yonis was a fantastic instructor and I suffer with nerves in test situations. Literally couldn’t have asked for a better instructor got me through my test and although the original learner car was damaged in a learner accident, yonis went all out and borrowed his wife’s car as she is an instructor to, this was to get me through my test and I passed. I can’t express how thankful 😌 and grateful I am. 💯 ⭐

Passed First Time
I passed my driving test first time and I genuinely couldn’t have done it without Raj. From the very first lesson, he made me feel calm and confident , he has a really patient teaching style and always explained things clearly. Fab driving instructor.
Due to a back condition, I hadn’t properly driven for nearly 5 years. Although I passed my test 7 years ago through an intensive driving course, looking back I never truly learned how to drive confidently or fully understand the roads. After not driving for so long, my confidence was completely gone and I felt like I’d forgotten everything.
I put a post on Facebook asking if anyone could help rebuild my confidence and driving knowledge. I received several responses, but most felt like they were simply interested in gaining a customer rather than understanding what I was actually struggling with.
Then Darryn Majury messaged me and he was the first person who genuinely seemed to care about me and the difficulties I was facing. I explained my anxiety, especially around complex roundabouts, which completely overwhelmed me.
I booked a 1.5-hour taster session with him to see if he was the right person to help me, and honestly, it turned out to be one of the best decisions I could have made.
From the very first lesson, Darryn made me feel calm, comfortable and never judged. His teaching methods were amazing and the way he explained things just clicked in my head in a way they never had before. He noticed things I was doing wrong that I hadn’t even realised, despite already passing my test years ago.
After 8 lessons with him, my confidence has grown massively. My driving skills and road knowledge have improved so much, but most importantly, I’m no longer terrified to get in my car. Even roundabouts, which used to make me panic the second I heard “at the roundabout take the…” no longer feel impossible.
I honestly cannot thank Darryn enough for his patience, kindness, support and encouragement throughout the whole process. He didn’t just help me improve my driving, he gave me back confidence and independence that I genuinely thought I’d lost.
If you struggle with driving anxiety, lack confidence, or simply need someone who truly understands how to teach in a calm and supportive way, I would recommend Darryn a million times over.
Thank you again for everything you’ve done for me. I genuinely appreciate it more than words can say.

multiple bad experiences
When I signed up to Smart Learner I was assigned an instructor who genuinely seemed to have no idea what he was doing. On my first lesson he took me the wrong way that lead onto a busy main road, while leaning across me trying to control the car himself. He spent most of the lesson on Google Maps instead of focusing on my driving, and I constantly had to ask “left or right?” at junctions because he wasn’t paying attention. That lesson was refunded, but it shook me a little.
Unfortunately things didn’t improve with my next instructor, Pete. While knowledgeable, his teaching style was patronising and intimidating. He would repeatedly raise his voice over mistakes long after I’d acknowledged them, making me anxious rather than helping me improve.
One lesson in particular was the final straw. After I entered in the right-hand lane due to parked cars blocking the left, he told me that was illegal (it isn't) and spent several minutes shouting at me. Later, while attempting a manoeuvre I’d never done before, he became visibly frustrated when I didn't do the whole thing correctly, shaking his head, putting his head in his hands, slamming the dashboard and telling me to “pack it in.” I found this unnecessarily humiliating and counter productive. I left all lessons feeling distressed rather than confident.
I finally decided I would never get back in a car with him again and requested a refund for my final unused hour. Despite my experiences across multiple instructors, Smart Learner refused to refund it, which I felt showed very little care for customer experience and safeguarding in general.
i'm not one to leave a bad review and I understand driving instructors have difficult jobs, but confidence is a huge part of learning to drive, and my experience with Smart Learner ultimately damaged mine rather than built it up. I have decided to share because it took me a good year to build my confidence back up again.
