Awful, avoid at all costs
I've owned a Smartap Shower System for over a year now and have been using it regularly (as you'd hope).
Where do I start? TL;DR - The app is awful, the product is unreliable, the support is non-existent and the website lies. The only thing that is actually positive is the product’s concept.
As far as smart shower systems go it appears to be the best on the (very small) market, it has the most outlet valves, wi-fi control, an Alexa skill for voice commands and even an API for deeper integration. All of these are great features but ALL of them are non-functioning for my system. The valve no longer connects to wi-fi meaning all the smart functions are totally dead. I have 3 different outlets hooked up but I can only use 1 now because it needs to connect to the Smartap servers in order to configure each of the outputs after resetting the device!
Now the Smartap app just tells me that the phone isn’t connected to the network that the valve creates for setup – even though it is. I don’t know if this is a hardware failure or if it’s down to the app its literally not responding after many, many attempts on various devices. The app is so poorly designed and extremely buggy that it makes me think this could be the issue, there is not even a button to turn the shower on and off. Also, it hasn’t been updated in 2 years! I mean, come on! Do customers that invest in this product just get disregarded forever? Looks like it. The UI is awful, it’s as if there was a handbook for User Experience design and they said “Let’s do the opposite of this!”.
The plastic buttons (yes, plastic) on the control have started to have their chrome finish peel away, so corners have been cut wherever possible.
All of these things could be addressed by the support team but, surprise, surprise, they simply ignore any form of communication! The phone number on their site is dead, I’ve sent about 7 emails over the course of last 2 months and no one responds! I’ve tried all the email addresses on their and even used the in-app support request and not a thing, utterly shocking and disappointing that a company can behave this way.
I had hoped that the API could be my saving grace, so that I could mitigate all the tech issues by building my own UI but as Smartap is a ghost company there is not chance of me getting hold of the documentation (if it ever actually existed).
Their website (much like their app) hasn’t been updated in years, Smartap was actually acquired by Masco Corp earlier this year, so it appears all original customers have been left by the wayside. But it’s OK as Asaf has made his millions.
I appreciate this is very much a first world problem, but having just shelled out over £10k on a bathroom renovation with the Smartap system tiled into the wall it’s a frustrating and a horrendously expensive mistake to rectify. Please don’t make the same mistake as me, Mira offer a viable alternative.
