Unprofessional manager
Dear Corporate Customer Relations Team,
I am writing to file a formal complaint regarding an upsetting experience my husband and I had at Banter Jewelry in The Avenues Mall in Jacksonville, Florida, on Saturday, October 17, 2026.
We visited the store intending to purchase several items. During our interaction, my husband, who is Black, jokingly addressed an associate he perceived to be Latino as “papi.” The associate, who identified himself as the manager, became visibly angry, stated that the term was racist, and called my husband a racist.
We were shocked and initially thought he was joking. My husband understood “papi” as a familiar expression he had heard used casually, without any racial insult intended. We recognize that familiarity with an expression does not mean every person welcomes it, and we would have been willing to apologize and stop using it. However, we were not given a meaningful opportunity to explain or resolve the misunderstanding.
When we asked whether another associate could assist us, he reiterated that he was the manager and refused to serve us because, according to him, we were racist. The interaction was embarrassing and left us feeling unfairly accused and unwelcome.
An employee is entitled to ask customers not to address him by a particular term. Our concern is the escalation to accusations of racism and the refusal of service without allowing an opportunity for clarification or an apology.
As Black customers, we also left wondering whether our race influenced how we were treated. I cannot know the manager’s motivation, but I would like that concern included in a fair review of the incident.
I am requesting that your corporate team investigate, preserve and review any available surveillance footage, and speak with both employees who were present. Please provide a written response explaining your findings and whether the handling of this incident was consistent with your customer-service and nondiscrimination policies.
We entered your store to shop and expected to be treated respectfully. Even when a misunderstanding occurs, customers and employees should have an opportunity to resolve it calmly.
We went to the Banter’s upstairs and told the associate la about it and they laughed as well. Even joked about during the whole transaction. I love you guys products and would hate to have to stop shopping with you guys because someone was having a bad day or is a closet racist himself. He could have pulled us to the side and let us know how he felt and we would have apologized for offending him. Instead he went off in front of everyone. Pull the cameras and you’ll see
The incident took place Saturday October 17, 2026, between 1-3 pm at the Avenues Mall in Jacksonville Florida at the Banter’s downstairs location.
