I had a poor experience when I investigated Equity Release solutions provided through Retirement Solutions (they are a broker) for the following reasons:
- Their quote was uncompetitive in three areas: loan to value, interest rate and charges. Their loan to value rate was lower than other ER providers based on an identical property valuation. Their interest rate was higher (and on a lower LtV ratio too). Also their representative/ broker demonstrated he was receiving a) a commission from the ER provider as well as b) charging me a front end arrangement fee. I thought this was a bit excessive and was able to shop around and without too much difficulty found alternative providers who provided quotations with:
- a higher loan to value ratio
- a lower interest rate (on the higher LtV ratio)
- where the broker only received commission from the loan provider (and he also had a very competitive fixed fee arrangement in place with the solicitor for the legal costs). The Retirement Solutions package was consequently uncompetitive versus that I closed with an alternative provider.
However the worse thing of all is that Retirement Solutions kept ringing me, texting me and sending me mail shots (even when I asked them to remove my details from their database). My thinking changed from them being simply an uncompetitive provider to a perception that they are a company that use quite forceful sales methods, pressurising/preying on older/retired people (who may be struggling in our current economic climate and are consequently a bit vulnerable) to accept their expensive solutions. They have made me quite wary about all retirement marketing and solutions that I see advertised.

Retirement Solutions made the whole process of equity release clear from beginning to end. It’s a huge decision to make and they guided me through with good advice and no pressure from start to finish.

I had a wonderful agent called Steve guiding me through who was experienced and knowledgeable and thorough. He was also intelligent unlike the lawyers EQUILAW who took over the process and left me clueless as to what was going on.

From my first enquiry onwards meeting Paul Oldreive, my advisor Retirement Solutions answered all my questions and clearly explained anything I wasn't sure of.

Information was clear from the outset and process well laid out. Representative made things as straightforward as possible. The only downside was needing a full day to visit the lawyer in Edinburgh but they proved to be worth the effort. A trouble free experience.
