In Feb 2025 we used a "30 day unlimited data" SIM which satisfied all our needs. The lack of a phone number was addressed by using WhatsApp for calls.

The japan esim worked well on my cruise as we hugged the coastline and only occasionally ventured out of range. The taiwan esim worked well in both cities also.

Everything seemed to work perfectly until I tried to send an SMS with a photo attached. The error message said my data balance was zero and so the message was not sent. This caused some angst until I my enquiry told me that SMS messages could not contain attachments but could do so with Messenger or WhatsApp! Otherwise, no problems. Easy set up.

I have loaded the ESim before going overseas. the process is quite easy. After landing the overseas airport, the ESIm is working instantly. It was very smooth process.

I ordered a T-Mobile prepaid sim card which arrived within a couple of days. I was able to activate the card and obtain my phone number before I left Australia. I inserted the card before I left but did not turn the phone on until I arrived. Once I turned the phone on in the US it started to operate straight away and worked fine during my time there.
