Unfair Tax

HMRC taxes people on simple saving accounts interest, which barely keeps the value of the money saved because of inflation, which is an unfair tax on savers, but obviously this is decided by corrupt lowlife politicians, who want everybody to spend and be in debt, rather than save.

SHAMEFUL OUTFIT - INCOMPETENCE OFF THE SCALE!

Yet again HMRC excels in incompetence!

I have asked 3 times since 9th December 2025 for a 24/25 Tax Year P800 calculation but, despite promises, still have not received one. My Government Gateway account states for 24/25 Tax Year "You paid the right amount of tax. There is nothing more to pay for this year." but HMRC has changed my Tax Code for 26/27 and say I owe tax for 24/25. They are indeed right, I do owe tax on 24/25 savings interest, but this doesn't show in my Government Gateway account. HMRC digital services are a disgrace.

And be warned, HMRC conjures up a figure for untaxed interest that is ALWAYS WRONG. Every year you must ask HMRC for a breakdown of accounts/interest they use to conjure up this figure.

I am now complaining every year. HMRC must have an army of staff dealing with complaints, and they still cannot fix the root cause of significant recurring problems.

SHAME ON THIS OUTFIT HMRC - IF THEY WERE REGULATED THEY WOULD BE SHUT DOWN.

Bereaved people - WARNING: Keep immaculate records (including photos/scans of everything), send everything guaranteed and signed for.

I would score 0 if at all possible.
I review as a bereaved person acting as executor for my relative's estate.
MAKE SURE YOU KEEP IMMACULATE RECORDS, TAKE PHOTOS OF EVERYTHING AND SENT ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING GUARANTEED SIGNED FOR in the post or HMRC will tell you they have not received it.
More than 5 months after bereavement, I am being repeatedly asked AGAIN for payments made months ago immediately on receiving demands. I have also been asked for payments for previous years where the tax has ALREADY been paid through my relative's tax code! I have sent every bit of information/payments immediately, but HMRC simply say they have lost it, or can't find it. The bereavement line is apparently 4 separate centres, so you never get to speak with the same person. All 4 appear to be staffed by people who really don't give a damn - they will give the impression they want to help, but instead simply repeatedly fob you off with incorrect information, then try to blame you. KEEP IMMACULATE RECORDS AND TAKE PHOTOS OF EVERYTHING and COMPLAIN TO THE OMBUDSMAN - it's the only way HMRC will take any notice of you.
I want to grieve my relative in the knowledge that I have done my duty as their executor. HMRC has made this impossible for 5 months so far, seriously affecting my mental health and wellbeing. This is beyond abysmal service, it is downright cruel.

Automatic system takes ages then its half hour wait or more and if you have the wrong option you have to start over again to be told to try a different number with half hour wait each time . At this point it would cost less in time to not pay and wait for them to fine me with correct details . Unbelievable

bad customer service

I write to review as well as raise a concern about a recent call I had regarding guidance on Companies House director ID verification.
During the call, I spoke with an advisor named Louis. She asked for my company's house number, which I promptly provided. After this, there was a period of silence lasting around three to four minutes with no explanation or update. She then returned and asked if I was still there. When I responded, the call was abruptly disconnected.

I found this experience both unhelpful and discourteous. I was left without the guidance I had called for, and the manner in which the call ended felt dismissive.

I believe it is important that customer service standards are maintained for members of the public. I would advise the company house/HMRC to review the recorded calls and take appropriate steps to ensure staff provide clear communication and professional support throughout.

No respect been waiting on a call for over 10 days they have took more tax off me again without any answer increased payments a have without any answer they have affected my health and don't care it's all about money you go on the phone you get so may different answers do they have a clue what they are doing it's peoples life they are dealing with

Waste of time calling

I rang them this morning, luckily my call was answered in 10 minutes. Then it went downhill. The advisor tried to tell me that the PSA of £1000 was included in the Starter rate for savers of £5000. Instead of them being added to make £6000??She wasn't interested in my query, just wanted to get me off the call.

Awful Government Gateway experiences

Government Gateway logs you out of their systems if you are a rare user.Their systems are laborious and don't seem to work. I was helped on line a couple of weeks ago but today trying to help my wife log in there we're similar problems, then when on a 40 minute wait to their call to helpline it cut off the online connection. I then spent 40 minutes waiting for an answer on their telephone hotline system only for the staff member to be unable to hear me or complete checks to call us back. She either hung up or their line cut out. It would appear that their systems are not fit for purpose.

Horrific

My experience of them is they presume you're trying not to pay tax, as in dodge the tax you owe. So there is literally no point in trying to communicate with them unless absolutely necessary and, then, be ready for a very uncaring service. I'd have more respect for them if the front page of their website said WE LITERALLY DONT CARE WHAT YOU HAVE TO SAY. JUST HAND OVER THE DOSH, YOU CROOK! At least there'd be some honesty there.

I’ve had an ongoing saga with an issue around penalties that was resolved in 2023 however each year they keep adding it back on and charging me interest etc. very frustrating. However! I spoke to Homaid today who was really helpful. He took his time to go through all of my files and came up with a resolution for me which has cancelled any fines and refunded my account. Really good customer service for a change from a company that usually bombs in terms of customer service. Well done 👍

Livvy R in Online Services is amazing and a credit to HMRC!

So I would have given this service a ‘0’ however, after being sent backwards and forwards, cut off and holding for hours on end we eventually spoke to Livvy R at online services. She was amazing! She took the time to answer all our questions and resolve our issue promptly, professionally and with great patients. Working until 6.30 on a Friday night to help us resolve our issue. Thank you once again Livvy.

If I could give no stars I would- HMRC would be better employing rocks to man their phones as they are probably more sentient.

If I could give no stars I would. Just getting round to posting this after recuperating from the cumulative trauma of 6 plus hours on the phone in a perpetual cycle of idiocy. Called for a fairly standard tax code check, worst choice of my life. Never ask them to look at anything unless it is causing big problems, the first person on the phone decided to ruin my life and put in a 30k figure for an 'old job' which I never had as I have been employed in the same place for 6 plus years, paying paye tax. This caused months of headaches before Christmas. Almost ruined it for my children and added stress which I believe subsequently added to my hospitalisation with sepsis. Can't substantiate that but feck it hmrc just makes things up so why shouldn't I. The began to tax me for this magical 30k I had never earned and every time I phoned blamed my own payroll which I advised was impossible. I would have been better chatting with a rock as it would be more sentient than the mouth breathers on the phones. Eventually got an amazing lady who listened to what I said, I had to figure the issue out for them that they incorrectly put figures in as a p45. These are the people who collect and collate the countries funds from working people. What a terrifying prospect that is. Fair play to the morons who faked not being able to hear me, that at least required some lateral thinking so kudos to them, they will go far I imagine. Anyways, what a terrible, terrible system and run by absolute moronic people.

HMRC - Overpayment Relief Submissions - Dragging!!!

I raised a complaint in November 2025 regarding my Overpayment Relief claim, which should have been resolved within 15–30 working days. It is now March 2026, and over four months later, it is still not resolved.

During this time, I have had to repeatedly chase for updates, only to be given conflicting information and resolution dates that are never met. I was told it would be sorted by 18th and 20th February — neither happened. I have since been told that key actions on my case had not even been completed.

I am due a refund, and because of these delays, I have effectively lost out financially over the past four months. There has been no urgency, no ownership, and no accountability in handling this.

This now needs to be resolved before the end of the current tax year. It is not acceptable for this to roll into another year due to ongoing delays and poor handling.

This is not just poor service — it is a failure of process. When money is owed to customers, delays like this are unacceptable.

Very efficient when it comes to taking money, but when it comes to paying it back, the system simply does not work.

Extremely frustrating experience from start to finish.

Can’t make it up!

Good grief! How difficult can it be made! I hadn’t used my gateway for two years so tried to use it again to check my pension forecast but it had to be reset according to the app. Despite numerous attempts to reset it following all instructions it was no good as my mobile number has changed now we live in Spain and you can’t update your number without getting into the app. We contacted HMRC on the phone going through all the options and after holding on for many minutes we were given many many phone numbers to call which we did but either not our department or another number! Finally got through to the right department and after 40 minutes of following their instructions got to the final bit and got cut off. So now have to start all over again. Absolutely shocking! why oh why after verifying your details and proving who you are why can’t they send you a code via your email?? So simple but not for HMRC! The call centre staff obviously read a script if they put some human effort into helping people many simple issues would be solved in minutes!So contacted them again this morning and all it you get is option after option after option. After 20 minutes we got through this time to the correct person but again after so long got cut off but luckily just as he managed to send us an email to reset our mobile number. So we started this 9am Saturday morning hours in the app trying to reset it 9 phone calls and finally breathed against 1:10 on Tuesday morning! Shocking service.

I just want to check my tax return

I just want to check my tax return. The site insists on sending me a code via phone. I am abroad. I do not have the phone. Why can't they send a code via e-mail? I have spent a long time getting so-called authenticated but it still boils down to needing a code sent via my mobile!!! An hour wasted filling out numerous boxes for nothing. And why can't they have a couple of questions on one page instead of only one!!!
