I received an alert on my phone saying there was fraudulent activity on my card @2:45 on 5/17/26
I was told on 5/17/26 it would take 7 - 10 business days to receive a new bank card which should have been 5/26/26 or 5/29/26. I did not receive my card on either of those days. So I called last Thursday 5/29/26 to find out where my new card was. I was told that the card was canceled on 5/19/26 which was 2 days after I called and canceled the card. So now I was told I would get it on 6/1/26. Today is 6/1/26 NO CARD!!!! I work 8:30 - 5:30 M&T is open 9-5 impossible to get to the bank when it's open. I work half day on Saturday morning so guess what I have no access to getting cash. I was able to get money by asking people to go to the bank so I could pay bills. I have no cash for food for me or my dog. It has been 10 business days and 3 Sundays, 2 Saturdays and a holiday no card. I called when I got home from work to find out where the card is, not in my mail box. No one mention expediting the card until tonight. Now I have to wait 3 more days to get a new card expedited. I'm living on bread and jam due to not being able to get cash to buy food. I have had all I can take with M&T. I will be get a new bank. This is insane I am SOOOO ANGRY WITH M&T BANK. The customer service are useless.

I would give zero stars if possible. This bank is awful.. The staff have no clue what is going on. Speak no or little english, rude, obnoxious, sarcastic and down right deceitful..Demand our payments with zero service.

They are a mediocre bank at best. The staff at the Shelton CT locations seem like you are bother to them. The worst thing about M&T are their hours of operations. Prior to the merger, I was a loyal Peoples customer. They had hours that were convenient to the average customer including branches in supermarkets. The supermarket branches truly accommodated clients that worked Monday-Friday by being open on Saturday AND Sunday. Now, sadly M&T has abandoned their core customers. The branches go dark on Friday afternoon and open again on Monday. They will tell you many of their services can be accomplished online, yet there is a lot that requires being in the branch. That means I, like many other customer, have to take a day off.

Horrible dealing with them. My sister had her auto loan with them and after she passed, I handled the estate. We paid the balance off on the loan, then waited, and waited, and waited, for the Lien Title to be released. Called twice, told it should be coming "soon". Third time? was told, "oh, different procedure when it's an estate" and then the gave us a laundry list of what they "needed" in order to issue the title. Am still waiting on it. And by the way, if you are a customer, be aware. There automated system and customer service identifies you by the account number AND the FIRST FIVE digits of YOUR Social Security Number. Hmmm...let's see, if a hacker gets a hold of anyone's account, where the more typical LAST 4 digit of Social Security is on file...connect the dots. A hacker could absolutely have access to ALL accounts held with M&T Bank with their stupid First 5 digits - who was the genius who thought that up???

One of their most aggravating practices was that once my home loan was paid off, M&T quickly blocked online access to my mortgage account and documents. Customer service confirmed this was “standard practice.” That meant I suddenly lost access to years of loan statements, escrow information, tax records, and payoff-related documents right when I most needed them for reconciliation and recordkeeping. I got no notice that this would happen,.

Getting help was also extremely difficult. Reaching a live representative required long hold times and multiple calls. Once connected, the staff, although polite, seemed unfamiliar with handling broad documentation requests from a customer trying to assemble a complete mortgage file after payoff.

For example, I requested copies of my mortgage-related records — things like the appraisal, title work, settlement documents, payoff records, and other key loan documents. Rather than providing a complete package, representatives insisted that I specifically name every individual document I wanted, some of which turned into special requests. The process felt unnecessarily rigid and confusing, especially for records they clearly knew how to retrieve internally.

I also had ongoing issues from the past few years involving property tax bills during periods when my tax assessments were under appeal. Despite the fact that I maintained an escrow account specifically intended to handle taxes and insurance, M&T repeatedly insisted that certain “irregular” tax bills were my responsibility to pay directly rather than processing them through escrow. This created unnecessary confusion, duplicate tracking, and concern about possible delinquency issues.

The mortgage itself eventually was paid off correctly, and the lien release was ultimately recorded. It was very weird that I got "automated" letters as part of their payoff process, in old fashiond type face in faded ink, making them difficult to read, part of the reason I later called again, requesting electronic versions. The servicing experience — especially during the final payoff phase — felt automated, opaque, bureaucratic, poorly coordinated, and far less customer-friendly than it should have been.

After dealing with multiple servicers over the life of this mortgage, M&T stood out for poor communication, weak document accessibility, and a payoff process that placed too much burden on the customer to navigate their internal systems. It worked for many years but I guess once the I made my final payment, they did the basics, I assume correctly, but then just wanted to be rid of me - hence blocking my online access include that of my final 1098 this year. Keep in mind, my mortgage was transferred to M&T Bank as a loan servicer after several earlier lenders/servicers over the years. I did not originally borrow from M&T.

Does anyone actually work at this bank or is it all automated??

Worst bank ever in terms of service and knowledge. How do they stay in business.
Banker actually told me that if I pay $20,000 towards principle on my auto loan, my payment amount and length of loan do not change!! Can you believe that. Had to talk with 3 people before talking with someone who had some knowledge. OMG never bank here. 😩

M&T makes it very hard to pay down your loan early. They won't let you do a principal only payment online or over the phone. Even if you pay more than your required amount for the month it applies to the next payment so that your interest amount doesn't go down. When I called to try to get a previous payment fixed they refused, even though it was a $200 payment I made when nothing was due. I was informed the only way to pay additional to principal was to print the form from their website, and mail it with a check to them. I asked if I would be reimbursed for driving to staples, the printing cost, and the stamp cost since my contract says I can pay early at no additional cost and they said no.

The two women I talked to were very polite although they had not been given any tools or authority to actually help the customers. (Victoria and Hazel - both thick Indian accents)

I would not give them even 1 star. Paid off our account for an RV on April 2, 2026. It is May 14, 2026, and I'm on my 4th call to them slung where my lein release is!? We have a buyer for our RV and cannot complete the sale without the lein release to get the title. I will never use M&T Bank again and strongly advise against them. Give your local bank your business.

If the Trader Joe's parking lot mated with the Samsung Galaxy Note 7, and then THAT child mated with Apple Maps, and then THAT child mated with the DMV on the last day of the month, then THAT child mated with the Microsoft Zune, you'd get this flaming piece of hot frustration garbage.

Only works in Microsoft Edge, a browser with a 5.58% market share. I had to download it specifically for this purpose. Clearly, MTB made a mint on that little deal. And that's only when it actually works. The scanner constantly jams. I have to redownload the driver every time I deposit checks. It's actually faster for me to drive to the bank and deposit the checks the old-fashioned way.

MTB needs to fix this system. It's 2026 for crying out loud.

DO NOT GET A PERSONAL LOAN FROM M&T. I have a mortgage through them, like any other bank it's straight forward and easy to make "Additional Principal Payments". However, on their Personal Loan portal, there are no options to submit Principal only payments. They provide two things, payments made and upcoming scheduled payments. But if you try to send multiple payments a month, they will ALL be allocated to INTEREST. Making it extremely difficult to pay off your loan. Just be ware of them.

If you absolutely have to get a loan, I recommend looking into SoFi or Upstart first.

I would strongly discourage anyone from using M&T Bank for a mortgage loan based on my recent experience with their lending process. This was by far one of the worst loan experiences I have ever encountered. The loan process dragged on for approximately seven weeks, including more than three weeks past the original closing timeline. Throughout the process, the lender continuously requested additional documentation with little explanation and gave very poor communication regarding the actual status of the file. After weeks of delays, we were told the loan had already been approved by underwriting and only needed a final secondary signoff. Everyone involved in the transaction relied on those representations and adjusted schedules accordingly. Then at the very last minute, after multiple extensions and significant disruption to all parties, we were informed that the second underwriter would not approve the loan after all. This created a domino effect involving multiple closings, movers, scheduling conflicts, and major inconvenience for buyers, sellers, agents, and title companies. The lack of communication throughout the process made the situation even worse. Repeated requests for updates and clarification were either ignored or answered vaguely without concrete information. I understand that underwriting issues can happen with any lender, but the way this file was handled was completely unacceptable. Important concerns should have been identified much earlier instead of allowing the transaction to continue for weeks while everyone was being led to believe the loan was close to closing. Then at the last minute, they would not approve it. Based on this experience, I would never recommend using M&T Bank for mortgage financing.

Horrible mobile banking experience. Attempted multiple external transfers unsuccessfully. None of the employees were able to resolve the issue. Closing account after a week of wasted time and frustration.

I went to the branch in Wayne, PA and had the pleasure of interacting with Olympia who is professional, friendly, pleasant and welcoming. I have been a member of the M&T Bank for a great number of years and they have always treated me with the utmost respect and they are always willing to help me with any questions or assistance that I have/need.

Frankly, I am stunned by seeing negative reviews. I had an absolutely extraordinary - world class - customer service experience at an M&T supermarket branch last Saturday. The woman who was running the branch is Erin Dacell. I had a somewhat complex set of service requests which included shifting a bank card from the former officeholder in the non profit corporation to me - and creating two cashier's checks. Erin was totally professional. It also appeared to me that the general service level beyond her was quite high. The line was long behind me - partly due to me - and Erin was completely unfazed - locked in the moment - and all customers I saw were treated with great respect and professionalism. Thanks to Erin and her colleagues for a truly great experience. My transactions were very important to me - that they be done that day and done professionally. Couldn't have been better!

Someone had written a personal check to me that was from M&T bank. I took that check to a M&T branch to cash it and they rudely charged a fee of over $10 for a $520 check because I didn't have an account with them. Well, the customer issuing the check did, so why the heck would I be charged. How disgusting of a way to do business. Also, the teller was not customer service oriented. Rude and undermining. I will spread the word of this below average bank. I have accounts elseand was only cashing here as a convenience to me. Definitely didn't turn out convenient at all.

I went to the Wilmington, MA M&T branch on 5/1/26 around 3pm. I tried to withdraw $100 from the ATM with the hope of using that money to open an account with M&T. The money didn’t come out of the atm but it appeared withdrawn on my online account for my current bank. I went into the branch to report this happened. A nice gentleman tried to help me. One of the tellers, an Asian lady, was extremely rude & lacked compassion. She told me there was nothing she could do & to file a claim with my bank. I am so upset because although $100 may not seem like a lot, it was for me. To be dismissed in such a heartless way is the reason I will now or ever open an account with M&T. I have started to tell my friends & family of my experience & I will share this experience with as many people as possible because no one deserves to be treated in such a way that makes you cry.

Please 🙏 do yourself a favor and RUN from this bank, customer service is unprofessional and emotional, they hang up on you, they're rude and trying to pay your mortgage to them is like pulling teeth, they say they took the payment then you get zero notification the payment never posted then all of a sudden you're late and they ruin your credit score , They blame everyone else but themselves. They are a total NIGHTMARE, M & T banks hires trash people with zero professionalism & communication skills. RUN! Save your sanity!

Horrible customer service and communication. I lost my credit card on April 4th and was told a new one would be sent in 7-10 business days. On day 11, I still had not received my card and was told by phone representative to try going into a local branch for assistance. So I did and they saw no records of a new one ordered so I requested expedited next-day service which they claimed they put in. We'll 5 days later still no card. Went into the app to request a new card because the humans weren't doing a good job. I did get an alert that a new card was sent, but none has arrived yet. A credit card is pretty vital to a person's existence in today's world. This is unacceptable. The worst part is that they do not provide a tracking number to the customer so that we can see where it is in the shipping world. Not a professional way of doing business

This review is specifically for the M&T Bank app. The most frustrating thing about the app is that you are not able to set up automatic recurring payments. Additionally, even though I’ve set up face recognition, logged in using my username, password AND 2step authentication, I ALSO have to call and have them unblock my account so I can PAY them. What kind of bank doesn’t want their money repaid to them??! What kind of bank doesn’t have an autopay feature in the 21st century? Yes! Correct! Ding! Ding! Ding! M&T Bank!
