Stole 999 from me and blamed Synapse and Evolve
I opened a secured credit card at the end of December 2023. Things were a little hairy from the start. Bugs in the UI; weird discrepancies between displayed balances in the UI and the statement. As a result, I had already found a different solution and was in the process of moving. I only had a 0.71 balance remaining to set against my 999 deposit.
But things got downright criminal in May, 2024. Turns out that Klutchcard uses Synapse for their banking. Synapse started bankruptcy proceedings in October, 2023. And because of a conflict between Synapse and Evolve involving major balance discrepancies of tens of millions of dollars, Synapse froze all accounts in May. When Synapse did this, transactions on my Klutch cards began to be declined. At first without explanation. Then Klutchcard wrote a message with an explanation that included a lot of blaming others and an insistence that they were sufficiently capitalized to weather the storm. And yet. Klutchcard, without my participation tried and failed to move money (presumably my 999USD security deposit) through my account. Now I have a dead account and the insistence from their support that they can’t do anything about it. Here’s the thing: at no point did I enter a contractual commitment with Synapse or Evolve. My contract was with Klutchcard. So, if they can’t return my 999 USD, then only Klutchcard is responsible. What’s more, they have written into their contract that they can’t be sued. They require arbitration. Arbitration costs more (1400USD) than the amount of my money they accepted as security and have not returned. Given that these are secured credit cards, generally offered to people with poor credit and likely tight finances, the abuse of indefinitely freezing people’s money while you are still, according to your CEO, well-capitalized is particularly appalling. While I did not know that Klutchcard was using a partner that was already in bankruptcy proceedings when I opened my account, Klutchcard did, or should have. They could have declined to accept new customers until the problem was resolved. They chose a different path.
Klutchcard is not run to the standards of care you should expect from a business handling your balances or your remittances. Neither for their software, nor for their accounting, nor for their general business practices. Find an alternative.
To Klutchcard: Return. My. Deposit.
(I just looked at the other reviews. Apparently they are insisting that others pay them, causing harm to people’s credit ratings, while also not paying their own debts. Despicable.)
