Blessed in Barbados
My experience with the Barbados internship was truly a blessed and meaningful experience!! I knew I wanted to study abroad this past summer, but I wanted to find an opportunity that was related to nutrition and would give me hands-on experience as a dietetics student. This internship did EXACTLY THAT!
I first learned about this opportunity through a TSDA meeting, and I am so grateful that it was available. There are not many study-abroad opportunities specifically for dietetics students, so I was especially thankful to have this option and to exceed my expectations!
I chose the Kidney Care Internship, which gave me the opportunity to work in a dialysis clinic (something I had never experienced before). It was a great way to learn more about dialysis care and see the important role nutrition plays in caring for patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). The experience helped me grow both personally and professionally, and I truly feel that it made me a better dietetics student.
Dr. Grant, the director of the program, was also such a blessing throughout the experience. She is an incredibly compassionate person and genuinely cares about her students. When I lost my glasses during the trip, she went above and beyond to help me figure out how to get a new pair and worked with me to make sure everything was taken care of. That meant so much to me and really showed how much she cares for her students!
Overall, I truly loved everything about this program! I am so grateful I had the opportunity to participate, and I would definitely encourage other dietetics students to take advantage of it if they get the chance. I loved getting to meet other dietetics students and getting to connect with them throughout the trip! It was an experience I will carry with me throughout my dietetics career! :)
