Gallagher Arvostelua 

My experience with Gallagher relates to the calculation of a refund following the cancellation of my motor insurance policy with First Ireland.

I had paid €965 for the policy and cancelled within the 14-day cooling-off period. When the refund was eventually processed, I received only €772.74, meaning €192.26 had been retained.

I challenged the figures and requested a proper breakdown because they simply did not appear correct. First Ireland subsequently acknowledged that the refund had been calculated incorrectly and that the broker fee had not been refunded correctly, and advised that a further refund was due.

Mistakes can happen, but when dealing with customers' money, I expect basic refund calculations to be accurate. I should not have had to scrutinise the figures, raise a formal complaint and chase the matter in order to receive money that should have been refunded correctly in the first place.

The fact that the error was eventually acknowledged is welcome, but it does not change the unnecessary time and frustration caused by an incorrect calculation.

For a company specialising in insurance and financial services, I expected considerably better accuracy when handling a straightforward refund.
