Improper installation caused property damage
I hired Homeworks Energy through the Mass Save program to improve our home's insulation. Instead of improving efficiency, their work made things worse: they covered every soffit vent with insulation, trapping heat in the attic. This winter, that trapped heat caused severe ice dams and potential structural damage — the exact opposite of what a professional insulation contractor should produce.
I spent several months, with support from Mass Save auditors, trying to get Homeworks to correct the mistake. I presented visual, thermal, and smoke test evidence. Both my roofer and the Mass Save auditor independently confirmed a code violation. Despite all of this, Homeworks insisted the installation was done correctly — I'm still not sure whether that was incompetence or a deliberate stall.
The issue was only resolved after I contacted the Town of Reading building inspector, who inspected the work and immediately flagged it as incorrect. Homeworks agreed to fix the problem shortly after receiving his report.
Bottom line: if you're having trouble getting Homeworks to acknowledge a workmanship issue, contact your town building inspector — it will likely get faster results than dealing with the company directly.
