Take the fear away

The reason why it works is because the tutors relate to the students. It’s not school. They’re connected and in a safe space.

The book is very helpful, and in my opinion, anything that takes the fear and mental block away from maths is a win.

I was sceptical, but so far have great confidence in the grinds and the book. My son is about 4 weeks in. The sell was a little hard but the organisation of booking the lessons is excellent and the one to ones have only gotten better. I recommend.

Maths Made Simple Book

My daughter has used both the JC and the LC Maths Made Simple books. She thinks they are really excellent books and go into great description for each section. She finds they simplify and make the chapters in the textbooks so much easier to understand. The material was presented in a more accessible way than the textbooks. All the practice questions were previous Junior or Leaving Cert questions which makes it so much easier to study for the JC or LC as you get given real examples. She would recommend it.

I bought Maths Made Simple for my son and it’s the best investment I’ve ever made for him. He uses a couple of different resources in school but this is by far the most impactful one. It makes maths so simple…I suppose that’s in the name though!!

These books are not what they are advertised as

These books look like they have been written by someone with no background in mathematics education. They try to simplify the entire math's syllabus into short procedural sequences. They are infantile in their composition. The author overstates the relevance and importance of their books through their mass advertising campaigns on TikTok and Facebook. Closer inspection reveals the books are nothing more than a summary of text books that the students already have. There are no new insights.

In fact some of the information is just plainly wrong. For example, in the Algebra section of the JC HL book, the author states that

"When you move something from one side of an equation to another, it changes sign".

This is patently wrong, anybody with a decent basic knowledge of algebra is aware of this. This type of instruction causes more harm than good in the long term of a student's mathematics education.

Another statement,

"A quadratic contains three terms", is also wrong, a quadratic can contain one, two or three terms but the author does not seem to have that level of knowledge.

One of the books 'Top Tips' for JC HL students is that the top of a fraction is called 'the numerator' and the bottom 'the denominator'. Seriously? This is what students learn in primary school and is just a standard definition. How is it a 'Top Tip'?

The exercises are badly sequenced in terms of scaffolding and in a number of instances are also just straight lifts from text books.

The author has gone on a cynical hard sell on TikTok to young students who are quite impressionable and influenced by advertising. The author claims all a student will need is the material from these books. This is a deceitful statement. The books may be used as a revision tool, but even then, they are disjointed and do not cover the relevant material in any form of conceptual detail.

On one FB advert, the author tries to pull the wool over the eyes of the public by showing a couple of examples of text books where the mathematical symbols are quite confusing. The reason they are confusing is that the author is using university maths text books instead of secondary school text books. This is also deceitful.

Do not waste your hard earned €80 on any of these books, they are basically a con job. This is a huge amount of money for what is essentially a rehash of standard text book material and exercises and a very simplistic view of mathematics learning. I have no idea why the reviews so far have been so positive, perhaps the author is flooding Trustpilot with positive reviews as part of their hard sell campaign.

Update (01/02/2026) to my original review replying to Dublin Math's reply below.

I am not trying to harm anyone's business. This was an honest, thoughtful review from an experienced mathematics educator with a long history in mathematics education.

The reason Dublin Math's does not have my name as a purchaser is because it was a parent of two JC HL students who approached me saying their children had begged them to buy the JC HL book based on the zealous advertising campaign on TikTok. The parent was wondering whether it was worth the €80. They were essentially badgered into buying this book by their children. I quickly surmised it was not worth €80 and my review highlights some of the reasons why this is.

Dublin Math's replies to my points just highlight the amateur approach they have taken with this book. To insist a Quadratic has three terms by saying sometimes the x-term and/or constant term is zero is actually embarrassing to read as an educator. A quadratic has an x-squared term, that's all it needs as it relates to a quadratic rate of change of a function.

Dublin Math's pathetic response to my review pointing out that their book incorrectly states that something changes signs when moving from one side of an equation to another is again highlighting their lack of knowledge of basic mathematical operations. Consider -3x = 15, x=15/-3, x =-5. The -3 did not change signs.

The rest of their replies to my points were equally pathetic and embarrassing, only highlighting that Dublin Math's are charlatans pretending to be the holy grail of mathematics education.

Buy the book if you wish but realise that in the medium to long term, this book will offer very little to students other than perhaps assisting them in a review of material before exams.

It’s very clear that this review was written by someone with purposeful intentions of harming our business, either by a competitor, or by someone offended that the hard work of our team is paying off with the popularity of the Maths Made Simple series. This review is dangerous to others, but in line with the transparent ethos of our company culture, I’ll acknowledge and respond to each claim that John makes here.

Please note: we have no record of a John Devine ever purchasing from us, which is very convenient. John is more than welcome to provide evidence of a purchase in response.

“These books look like they have been written by someone with no background in mathematics education.”
The books are the culmination of over 15,000 hours of individual 1-to-1 maths lessons by both myself and my dedicated colleagues. We’ve done more 1-to-1 maths than anyone else in Ireland in the last two years, and the teaching in these books is based on everything we know students struggle with. Teachers in a school of 30 students miss these details.

“They try to simplify the entire maths syllabus into short procedural sequences. They are infantile in their composition.”
That is literally the point. The book is called Maths Made Simple, not Maths Made Hard. The “infantility” is intentional, to help alleviate the #1 issue with maths in Ireland: students are scared to try. Probably because of people like you, who seem to see simplicity as wrong.

“When you move something from one side of an equation to another, it changes sign.”
John uses quotation marks to make this seem like a direct quote. The extract he’s referring to is part of our subsection on the basics of solving linear equations. We teach multiple methods, such as “do the same to the left as you do to the right” or “take this number from both sides.” However, visually showing numbers moving across the = sign is by far the most effective way of illustrating the understanding of this concept. Again, if John had any experience with how students learn, this would be vividly apparent. I’m also unsure as to how his “quote” is even incorrect.

"“A quadratic contains three terms,” is also wrong…"
This is wrong. A quadratic always has three terms; however, sometimes the x-term and the constant term can be 0, an issue dealt with one page later, if he bothered to read. Again, John is shaming others for his 'expert' command of mathematics.

“One of the book’s ‘Top Tips’ for JC HL students is that the top of a fraction is called the numerator and the bottom the denominator. Seriously?”
Extremely condescending to assume that every student knows this. Again: how dare you put yourself on a pedestal and criticise others for not knowing what you know. And this right here is the biggest problem with other textbooks: they assume people know stuff. This definition is critical because the next page discusses operations with numerators and denominators.

“In a number of instances [they] are also just straight lifts from textbooks.”
So the book is a straight lift of the dictionary because it uses words that are in the dictionary? Give it over, man. Of course there will be questions that cross over. This isn't revolutionary.

“The author has gone on a cynical hard sell on TikTok to young students who are quite impressionable and influenced by advertising.”
98.6% of all sales come from parents, not students. 96% of all social media views come from accounts aged 36+. His claim is, again, not true.

“The author claims all a student will need is the material from these books.”
Give me one instance of a question from Junior Cycle Higher Level maths that isn’t addressed in this book?

Readers are welcome to make up their own mind, or even better, email us directly at admin@dublinmaths.ie
to get a free copy of Chapter 1. We think you’ll find that John is way off in his “review.”

P.S We've run out of characters to address John's remaining claims! But rest assured, they're as fabricated as the rest of his points:)

Review of Maths Made Simple…

I am very pleased with the Maths Made Simple Junior Cycle Higher Level book that I recently bought for my daughter. Although she is only in second year, and can sometimes find maths classes a bit overwhelming, this book has already made a noticeable difference. Having just started using it after Christmas, she has completed several exercises and is genuinely enjoying the material. The clear explanations and well-structured exercises seem to support her learning and boost her confidence. I also appreciate the option for an introductory one-to-one call, which adds valuable support. Overall, I would highly recommend this book to other parents and students looking for extra help with Junior Cycle Maths.

Mid-term crash course

I did the mid-term crash course and found it very engaging, it's clear in the classes that they're passionate about helping students. It really helped me to understand the maths in depth rather than just learning off formulas. I would recommend this to anyone who thinks they need a refresh of previous topics.
